QUIZ # 1 (November
14th, 1999)

Audrey Kingsley have in common with 2 of the 3 female medalists
at the 1948 Olympic 200m race?

the same first names: Audrey Kingsley, Audrey Patterson
(USA, bronze), Audrey Williamson (UK, silver). See
link
for Olympic medal winners of the past
Clues offered:
(Toby) tatu le drey
(Webmaster) And
just to get you going, here is a hint --- their last names were
not Kingsley!
(Webmaster) Only two of them have sons.
(2) Joseph
Chebet won a Mazda Miata for his efforts in the 1999 New York
City Marathon. What brand of vehicle does Chebet already have

Answer: Bicycle
Clues offered:
(Toby) The Cylops riddle says what has 4 legs in the morning,
2 at noon and 3 in the evening. Take the cyclops and put the answer
upon it... ?
(Webmaster) This
particular course measurement has gone into the legend as being
"notoriously unreliable" for what was supposedly the
first sub-2:10 marathon ever
(5) What is
the name of Catherina McKiernan's coach?
Answer: Joe
Doonan
Clues offered:
(Toby) Frazier must have

Sweden, 1 mil is 10k.
(Toby) The 15k race must also be a 'leading'
Swedish race
(Webmaster) It
is NOT the Bermuda International 10K --- she won that race only
8 times.
(Webmaster) No,
it is not a trick question like a duathlon.
(Webmaster) Grete's string was broken in 1987 by Ingrid
Kristiansen
(Webmaster) Do
the lido lope, not the lindy hop ...
(7) Some time
in this decade at the New York City Marathon, ten places before

(Toby) M.W.
MODE AOL would not give dot.com but dot.comcorrect
(Webmaster) The
answer to this question is NOT Lisa Ondieki (aka Lisa
Martin), who holds the New York City Marathon women's course
record. While it is true that she began her career as a
400m hurdler in Australia and she has an Olympics medal in the
marathon, she apparently never made it to the Olympics at the
shorter distance. Yes, it may have seemed to be a trick
question when it was phrased as a '400m event', which most people
would associate with the sprint rather than the hurdles.
But you will have to look at another continent for the answer
...
(Webmaster) See photo

Answer: 10
miles on a track and Uden
Clues offered:
(Toby) Hot distance
for December uden the Team points
(Webmaster) They hold events other than dancing competitions
at the Nationaal Sports Centrum
Papendal
(Webmaster) It's a fixed distance race. At
one time, Jos Hermens held the record for the one hour
race set at Papendal, but that was broken since then by Arturo
Barrios.
(12) Fred
Kiprop, a 2:06 Kenyan marathoner, has a slower 'marathoning'
internationally known brother. Tesfaye Eticha, a 2:12
Ethiopian marathoner, has a faster internationally known brother.
Name the brothers.

45 (c) 60
Answer: 60
Clues offered:
(Toby) mno oper
(Webmaster) Obviously, Tatiana can tell you the answer herself,
so all you have to do is pick up the telephone and call her.

Tie-breaker:
What was the combination of Henry Rono's briefcase
that would always accompany him throughout his record breaking years
of 1978-81?
(not needed, since
there were no ties)
Special handicap:
In addition, John Scherrer (and only John Scherrer)
must correctly name
-
the street that
Catherina McKiernan lives on
-
the village where
Fred Kiprop was born
-
the athlete whom
Henry Rono poured boiling water upon
-
the husband of
Tatyana Providokhina
-
the reason why
Steve Ovett ran his first half-marathon
Question: Why
does John Scherrer start with a handicap?
Answer: Why does Jonathan Pillow start five seconds
behind the others in the 400m's?
This quiz was so challenging that
no one got all the items right. Therefore, the winner's prize
went to the referee (aka the webmaster). This reaffirms your
belief that contests and raffles are always fixed by insiders.
We can only hope that this prize will encourage its winner to actually
do some running in the future and then give Geb a run for
the 10K record?
