Advil Mini-Marathon 1997

Just when you least expected, our intrepid photographer jumped out of the bush and snapped the following photographs. Just click on the link and the corresponding photo will download (slowly). These are the only usable photographs that we have, because we made the mistake of entrusting this very important mission to an overly excited amateur with trembling hands, faulty eyesight, lousy equipment, zero technique and a total lack of aesthetic sense.

Photo 1: At the 6 mile mark, Jackie Cortez is charging ahead while Stacy Creamer is closing in.

Photo 2: At the 6 mile mark, Stacy Creamer practiced 'form with dignity'.

Photo 3: At the 6 mile mark, Jill Gisvold showed her grit and determination.

Photo 4: At the 6 mile mark, CPTC cheerleaders Fasil Yilma and Jim (& Mary) Olson saw eventual winner Tegla Loroupe flew by in a blurred flash. (sidenote: Herbie Medina was in the vicinity draped in a Puerto Rican flag, but he was edited out of the picture intentionally).

Photo 5: At the 1 mile mark, Sylvie Kimché was cruising along, in her customary tall and confident form. She would eventually finish first in her age group (50-54), as she did every time that she raced this year.

Photo 6: At the 1 mile mark, the ever reticent Sarah Gross is trying to hide from the photographer by ducking behind a Warren Street runner. Her alternate explanation? In her own words, "I was jammin' my elbow into their backs." Is that why those two guys across the street looked shocked? Whatever ever happened to Sisterhood?

Photo 9: Here is Diane Lebowitz at the one mile mark.

The Advil Mini-Marathon was featured in ABC's Wide World of Sports on June 28th, 1997. After examining the film carefully frame by frame, we could only find CPTC men! Please excuse the quality of the photos, which were obtained via screen captures.

Photo 7: This was at the 1 mile mark at Central Park West and W86th Street. From left: Mel Washington (in white t-shirt and red shorts), Alan Ruben (in orange/gray CPTC track suit), Casey Yamazaki (in orange t-shirt and black shorts), Laura Mykytok (race leader in black), Elana Meyer (with sunglasses), Tegla Loroupe (in black) and the rest of the pack.

Photo 8: This was near the 6 mile mark. From right to left: Jim Olson; Fasil Yilma; Mary Olson; Roger Finney (who was wondering why his mate Stacy Creamer has not gone past yet) and Tegla Loroupe (race leader). This is the same spot as Photo 4 above, but taken from the viewpoint of a trailing motorcycle.
