1998 Brooklyn Half Marathon

This set of photographs was taken by the very photogenic Stacy Creamer. Stacy was nursing a hamstring injury and could not race. So she patrolled the course on her bicycle and took a number of photographs. Of course, the annotations below are not her doing since she does not any trace of nastiness in her.

  • Photo 1: Somewhere in this mob is our Alan Ruben, first master and eighth overall finisher. There was a strong headwind on the boardwalk, and the smart thing to do was to tuck in behind a crowd. Alan's time of 1:11 is a near PR performance, and may in fact be one given the vagaries of the actual distance for this race. Just so you know that Alan is not the only one to run behind others, the hand in the black glove (la mano negra!) in the middle of the photo belongs to Stu Calderwood (New York Harriers) --- I bet you did not guess that!
  • Photo 2: By contrast, our macho man Ramon Bermo has no compunction about taking the lead. Just take a look at the wide open space in front of him.
  • Photo 3: Meanwhile, Tyronne Culpepper is keeping a close watch on his buddy Victor Osayi. Although Tyronne would like to make believe that they have a rivalry as close as Jud Santos-Casey Yamazaki, he is actually still on speaking terms with Victor.
  • Photo 4: Hey, Mr. Official Timekeeper Ramon Bermo, you are not required to read your watch to give the time for a competitor! This is every man for himself! If you must, take a couple of minutes off and make the guy feel that he went out too fast and is about to fold!
  • Photo 5: Victor Osayi gives the power salute. His buddy Tyronne Culpepper is nowhere in sight.
  • Photo 6: So where did Tyronne Culpepper go? He was too busy providing escort for the lead women: Alexa Babakhanian and Jean Chodnicki. They are much more interesting than his buddy Victor Osayi.
  • Photo 7: Here is a triathlete Scott Willett masquerading as a runner.
  • Photo 8: Here is another triathlete Ross Galitsky (left) masquerading as a runner. Please note the commonality of expressions for the training partners Scott and Ross --- the identical smirk while attempting to look straight ahead! Do they practice that smirk?
  • Photo 9: Oh, here is the PR-smashing, team-leading Audrey Kingsley.
