1998 Frostbite 10
Miler
Pre-Race Jitters
-
Photo
1: Alan Ruben, Ramon Bermo and Peter
Allen are chatting outside the NYRRC building. Peter reminds
everybody to look out for runner #3364 in the race. Or is that
his lucky Pick-4 number of the day?
-
Photo
2: Joe Simonte is running this race, and probably
every other race too (but not the 60K!). He has calculated that
paying the benefactor fee with unlimited race entries is significantly
cheaper for him.
-
Photo
3: Welcome to Peter Allen's personal changing
room --- the middle of the roadway.
-
Photo
4: Bill Dunlop waves to a friend. He is using
the iron barricades as props for stretching his muscles.
-
Photo
5: Jud Santos arrives late, looking dishevelled
and even more bug-eyed than usual. He must have just tumbled
out of bed and ran over in a total panic. After all, he does
not want to be reported as being half an hour late to the race,
like some other people did.
-
Photo
6: This photo shows that you don't have to be the race
in order to get your picture taken and published. It helps if
you dress in orange and can cheer loudly (Stacy Creamer),
but you don't have to; in fact, you don't even have to be a
Central Park Track Club member (Stu Calderwood).
-
Photo
7: Jud Santos, Alan Ruben, Ramon Bermo
and Peter Allen are in the first rows of runners at the
start. The orange color is surely eye-catching.
-
Photo 8: Harry
Morales issued this challenge to the photographer, who has
been getting on his nerves recently: "I'm going to take
a leak in the bushes. Are you going to follow me too?"
Yes, we did and we now share what we found with you. Boy, were
we surprised! (Note: if you are too dim-witted to grasp the
point, just read the note at the bottom of this page).
Family Album
-
Photo
11: Guess who was on the race course? The proud new
parents Yumi Ogita and Casey Yamazaki. What perfect
color coordination! Yumi wants to point out that there is no
longer any evidence of the bulge around her waist! So don't
ask again! You hear! She is tired of being asked about it.
-
Photo
12: In lieu of a real baby, here is the hospital picture
of 2-day old Erika Maple Ogita-Yamazaki. Casey carries
it with him and we took a picture of the picture while Casey
held it in his hands (he was wearing the yellow gloves).
-
Photo
13: What about a picture of the whole family? Here we
are. Well, this quality of this picture leaves a lot to be desired,
but then the original was literally a thumbnail picture.
W86th Street
(near 2nd mile mark)
-
Photo
21: Jud Santos looks like
he is just rousing himself out of his slumber.
-
Photo
22: Ramon Bermo and Bill Dunlop are running
in tandem. Ramon has been nursing a hamstring injury, but he
thought that the team might need a fifth runner. So he was willing
to pace Bill as far as he could and even finish the race if
necessary. Hey, what team spirit!
-
Photo
23: Here is hard evidence that Harry Morales
is cutting the course by stepping outside of the recreational
lane, to the disgust of the other law-abiding citizens in the
race. This is yet another offense in addition to his misdemeanour
at the starting area.
-
Photo
24: For perhaps the first time in his life, Tyronne
Culpepper appears to be starting out at a reasonable pace.
Hey, doesn't this feel better?
-
Photo
25: Victor Osayi is right behind, and he would
in fact maintain contact with Tyronne for the entire race.
-
Photo
26: A major advantage with running for a club is the
cheering that you get from your non-racing teammates. In the
case of the Central Park Track Club, you get cheers from
club notables like Norman Goluskin and Irene Jackson.
-
Photo
27: Joe Simonte is chugging along in pursuit
of yet another age-group award. Of course, he ran out of display
space many years ago already.
Harlem Hill (5.5 mile in the
race)
-
Photo
31: On weekends, people race or
run with friends. Marty Stanton and Sadie are
out for a run too. We think Sadie looks a lot more enthusiastic
than Marty.
-
Photo
32: Roane Carey and Alan Ruben demonstrates
teamwork. They would run shoulder to shoulder until the very
end.
-
Photo
33: Hill-running is obviously no problem for the superbly
conditioned Peter Allen. Just check out those leg muscles.
-
Photo
34: Jud Santos uses his polka dot jersey credentials
to battle a New York Flyer. Jud would like you to know that
he ran this mile in 5:49.
-
Photo
35: Ramon Bermo and Bill Dunlop are still
together. At this point, Ramon probably knew that he could afford
to drop out because Bill was cruising under control. Therefore,
Ramon is all smiles and waving to his fans, but Bill did not
have the appearance of being convinced yet.
-
Photo
36: Charlie Stark comes around the corner, only
to find a camera looking at him and a big hill still ahead.
-
Photo
37: Rick Shaver is using the races to condition
himself back into shape. He ran this 10 miler at a pace that
was faster than his December 10K. His frequent racing appearances
mean that he has quietly piled up a lot of media exposure points.
-
Photo
38: Ross Galitsky spotted the photographer, quickly
dipped his hat and hoped to sneak by quickly. Sorry, Ross, this
inept effort did not work at all. You merely look silly.
Home Stretch (East 88th Street)
-
Photo
41: As the race winner swept by,
Aubin Sullivan wonders why her husband hasn't gone by
already. How much longer does she have to stand in the cold
for?
-
Photo
42: Just near the finish, Roane Carey opened
a small (=3 seconds) gap between himseslf and Alan Ruben.
-
Photo
43: Here is a close-up of Alan Ruben. Alan could
not afford to relax because someone was right behind him. Check
out the intensity on the man's face, and ask yourself, "Are
I ready to pay the price too?"
-
Photo
44: This is a three-person sprint finish. I would put
my money on our Peter Allen, not necessarily on pure
speed but definitely on determination.
-
Photo
45: Although there is not a soul within sight behind
Jud Santos, he is still going all out in a race against
the clock (more precisely, he needed to beat the Casey Yamazaki's
PR of 57:39). Ultimately, this would be Jud's best 10 mile time
inside Central Park, but still exactly one second short of that
standard of excellence.
-
Photo
46: In last week's race, Charlie Stark was distracted
by the lovely sight of the woman right in front of him. This
week, he had no such distraction. How boring!
-
Photo
47: Harry Morales tried really hard to suppress
a smile as he approached the photographer's spot, and he really
burst out moments later. Harry will never be a good poker player.
-
Photo
48: Tyronne Culpepper dug deep into his memory
bank to retrieve the 800m speed from his high school days.
-
Photo
49: Tyronne Culpepper could not afford to relax,
as his shadow Victor Osayi was right behind him. Meanwhile,
teammate Aubin Sullivan gladly cheered both of them on.
-
Photo
50: Ramon Bermo, who finally dropped out, and
Audrey Kingsley came jogging by. The first photo of them
did not come out well. So they were asked to retrace their steps
for this shot. We are grateful for their cooperation. As it
turned out, even this photo was slightly fuzzy. Can we have
them come back again?
-
Photo
51: At long last, here comes Ross Galitsky. For
this race, he decided to listen to the coaches' advice to start
out slow and pick up later. He was not thrilled with the results.
Towards the end, he saw this person in front of him who had
obviously gone out too fast and was rapidly disintegrating.
But try as he may, Ross could not close the gap. Next time,
he vowed to revert to going out as fast as he can and then pray
that he does not die too badly.
Post-Race Activities
-
Photo
52: Jud Santos gives a
post-race interview about his inside-the-park home-run. Would
you say this is the picture of someone who has had a good day?
His time of 57:40 was a course PR by a whopping 1:14. However,
according to the standard of excellence posted by his bed ---
namely, the PRs of Casey Yamazaki --- he would have still
fallen one second short of Casey's time at the 12/03/94 10 Miler.
How did he do this on 20 miles of training a week? He had a
normal dinner the night before, but he had a large helping of
Spam (tm) for lunch, plus potato chips for dessert. (Note: Jud
does not dispute the information, except that he actually ran
21.5 miles for the week).
-
Photo
53: Sam Li, Tyronne Culpepper and Harry
Morales sharing post-race notes. What notes? I guess they
have all done better before, and they have all done worse before.
Well, that is in fact false, because Tyronne set a PR by a whopping
9 minutes 13 seconds. Of course, the fact that he has only run
two 10 mile races in his life is immaterial.
-
Photo
54: This web photographer is known to have a proclivity
for taking photographs of people in various stages of undressing.
But here is a really unusual combination: Victor Osayi
in a leather jacket and running shorts. I wager that you have
never seen this combination of clothing before!
-
Photo
55: Ross Galitsky shows us how to tie shoelaces.
This is no trivial matter, especially for triathletes, since
that can affect mucho seconds in the transition.
-
Photo
56: A rare appearance by Mike Serrano, seen here
with a friend.
-
Photo
57: At the finish area, Jiyon Lee asked, "So
how did our women's team do?" As she was the only team
member in the race, the question was put back to her, "So
how did you do?" (Postscript: Actually, Carol Tyler
and Lynn Blackstone were also in the race.)
-
Photo
58: We present Audrey Kingsley, our reluctant
supermodel for the new Central Park Track Club jacket.
Note: As a family-friendly site, we
cannot publish the photo of Harry's trip to the bushes. In its place,
we have inserted a photograph of a phallic symbol, namely a statue
of Christopher Columbus. This picture was taken in San Juan, Puerto
Rico. Harry is undoubtedly irked at this misrepresenation, because
he is from Mayaguez, not San Juan. But that was as close as we could
get.
