1998 Al Gordon 5 Miler

Pre-Race Warm-ups

  • Photo 1: Charlie Stark is over-dressed for this warm February morning. But maybe that is what warming up means.
  • Photo 2: Rick Shaver is leaning against the lamppost and stretching his old and tired muscles.
  • Photo 3: Stacy Creamer checks her watch, sees that it is already 9:59am and wonders where everybody is.

West Drive, near 87th Street, halfway point

  • Photo 11: Victor Osayi, Charlie Stark and Rick Shaver are still together at this point.
  • Photo 12: Here is the view from the rear, showing what Rick is looking at. It is not good when the people that you want to stick close to have just opened a gap.
  • Photo 13: Stacy Creamer is practicing that 'no look' technique. The number of people on the club who run with their eyes shut is amazingly high. Could it be those Thursday evening road workouts in total darkness?

Cat Hill, less than a quartermile to finish

  • Photo 21: Victor Osayi led the team in this race. In fact, he also led the team on the same 5 mile course last year. In this photo, he is just ahead of the overall female winner Gillian Horowitz (of UATH).
  • Photo 22: This is photographic documentation that Rick Shaver ran this race. He was AWOL last week, after running every race since December 1997.
  • Photo 23: In this picture, Stacy Creamer is trailing 11-year old Linsey Scherf coming up Cat Hill. For the record, Stacy would like you to know that she did gather her self-respect and used her long (well, very much longer) stride to finish ahead by 3 seconds, buoyed by the very loud Italian cheering squad near the finishing line.
  • Photo 25: Jackie Cortes is working undercover today. No orange anywhere.
  • Photo 26: John Gleason wondered why it was harder for him to get up the hill than the lady and her dog.
  • Photo 27: Luca Trovato and his friend Carmine Petracca are observing the proceedings. If only there were a few more Central Park Track Club runners, they might have something more to cheer about.
  • Photo 28: New York Harrier Stu Calderwood is giving our Alan Ruben a thumbs-up sign. Alan did not race today. Yes, even running machines rest sometimes. Stu finished fourth overall in the race, and is probably thanking Alan for not racing this one.
