1998 Club Championship

PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 1: Peter Allen told his sons to smile at the camera.  Meanwhile, Alan Turner is now sporting a Westchester Track Club singlet.
  • Photo 2: Sylvie Kimche was probably telling Irene Jackson about her new house in Columbus.   Sylvie has promised to send us a picture of that house, so that she won't have to describe it to everyone.  So far, Sylvie said that she is enjoying the country life. Hmmm?
  • Photo 3John Sargent is putting on those ultra-fast neon green Nike shoes for this longest race in his life.   The good thing is that this is guaranteed to be a personal record.
  • Photo 4: Michael Garland entered the race at the last moment, out of team loyalty.  He has been running sparingly since injuring himself at the 52 second (oops, 62 second) quartermile race at the MAC mini-meet in early August.  He was partly reassured by a teammate, who claimed to have done wonderfully well in a similar situation.  After the race, that was revealed to be a white lie.
  • Photo 5: Jud Santos changed in his personal dressing room.
  • Photo 6: Here are Tyronne Culpepper (in the extra-heavy official club t-shirt), Carsten Strandlod (in the contraband orange NB singlet) and Hank Berkowitz (in the extra-light contraband official club singlet).
  • Photo 7: The two Italians want you all to know about their loyalty.  Carmine Petracca got off his job at 8am and ran over here for the 830am race start.  Michele Tagliati finished his shift at Mount Sinai, caught 3 hours of sleep, bounced up and came to the race.  "Forza Pantani!"
  • Photo 8: Victor Osayi and Fasil Yilma posed in front of someone they had better beat in the race.
  • Photo 9: Tony Ruiz made it to this year's championship race.  The unconfirmed rumor is that he missed last year's race in order to hang out in a pool.  This year, he kept the partying on the night before the race.

FIRST MILE

4.75 MILE (400m to go)

  • Photo 20: This is the overall winner of the race, Brian Clas (of NYAC), who set a course record.
  • Photo 21: Alan Ruben led the team with a PR-setting performance.
  • Photo 22: Hank Berkowitz checked his watch.
  • Photo 23: Peter Allen had his whole family waiting at the finish line.
  • Photo 24: This is the overall female winner Kim Griffin (of Warren Street), with our friend Stuart Calderwood running on the far side.
  • Photo 25: Victor Osayi set a PR as well as struck terror in Jud Santos, who was just a precious few seconds ahead but kept hearing people yelling Victor's name.
  • Photo 26: Tony Ruiz did alright in the initial stages but slowed down to a jog near the end.  His analysis of his present conditioning was that he could do great in anything under 5K, he could possibly gut it out for a four miler, but a five miler is one mile too long.   However, based upon the depth of the team, he figured that he would be able to score if he ran around 29 minutes.
  • Photo 27: Here is yet another blurry picture (same thing the previous week at the Manhattan Half Marathon) of Carsten Strandlod, who swung to the outside as soon as he came up to the photographer's spot.  He claimed that it was unintentional.  Right!  In this picture, the more visible people may be Tim Robinson and Michael Garland in the far background.
  • Photo 28: Here are Tim Robinson, Michael Garland and our friend Jean Chodnicki (of Warren Street).  Tim has just passed Michael and seized the tenth (and last scoring) position on the club.  The last time that Tim finished as the tenth runner in this race, his time was about two minutes faster ...
  • Photo 29: Tyronne Culpepper was the beacon for Michele Tagliati in the far background
  • Photo 30: Michele Tagliati ran close to his PR despite having only 3 hours of sleep.  It certainly looked very painful ...
  • Photo 31: Fasil Yilma was running right with Michele for a while, until Fasil had to stop and go through his usual stretching routine because of the mysterious pain.
  • Photo 32: Stacy Creamer managed to tie her personal record, which was set some eleven years ago.  Judging from the picture, she has certainly put in the effort.
  • Photo 33: Frank Handelman has been down this path many times over the years.
  • Photo 34: Jack Brennan has been down this path many times over the years, usually with Frank Handelman.
  • Photo 35: Sarah Gross led our Women's Masters.
  • Photo 36: Someone in a white singlet went quickly by.  We would have missed her completely but for the fact that her personal cheerleader (Scott Willet) was running along the bridle path while yelling encouragement.  Yes, that swinging ponytail belonged to Aubin Sullivan.
  • Photo 37: Mary Messite is being chased by Irene Jackson
  • Photo 38: Jane Harris was our third Women's Master!

CHEERING SQUAD

  • Photo 17: Betty Marolla formed the (ex-)presidential cheering squad of one near East 95th Street.
  • Photo 41: Our critic Frank Schiro was present, with Brian and Darlene.  Frank was duly unimpressed with a team whose fastest runner is 41 years old.
  • Photo 42: Scott Willet was down on his knees because he was exhausted from running all over the park to cheer the runners.
  • Photo 43: Bola Awofeso said that he could not run this race because he did that very tough road workout on Thursday.   Huh?  Excuse us!?  And look closely --- he  is wearing a bicycling shirt!  It makes us wonder where his loyalties lie.

POST-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 51: Alayne Adams, Carsten Strandlod, Michael Garland and Tim Robinson exchanged notes on team running.  Alayne thanked Carsten for being a tall orange beacon leading the way before her.  Tim apologised to Michael for passing him near the end, although he did that sufficiently early that it was not considered to be in bad taste.
  • Photo 52: Here is the cabal of master runners Sid Howard, Frank Handelman, Jack Brennan and Joe Simonte.
  • Photo 53: Michele Tagliati and Fasil Yilma
  • Photo 54: The web photographer had the pleasure of meeting Caryl and Steve Baron for the first time, even though all of us are longtime members.
  • Photo 55: Here are the two merry pranksters Raphael Devalle and John Sargent.  They got behind the web photographer and then said loudly, "Look!  This guy has a nice camera.   Let's rip it off!"
  • Photo 56: According to the finger-wagging Sid Howard, Kevin Arlyck's good performance today was due to the set of 600m-300m repeats that Sid prescribed for the track workout a few days ago.
  • Photo 57: Alayne Adams and Carol Tyler
  • Photo 58: In a major role reversal, Sid Howard found Scott Willett yelling "Keep the jog alive!" at the crest of Cat Hill.
  • Photo 59: Aubin Sullivan and Audrey Kingsley (note: they will be shocked to find that there was no accompanying annotation)

TEAM PHOTO

Okay, here are the disastrous series of pictures of the team taken after the race.   The problem is that the digital camera takes photos with 640x480 pixels, and we have thirty people or so in the picture.  This means that the resolution is low for individual faces.  Even Adobe Photoshop could not help.  However, you may still be able to discern certain people because of their unique characteristics (e.g. Frank Schiro's hair).  An interesting question is why these five pictures should be slightly different in the number of people present and their positioning.  Well, it is just that this team of individualists was very difficult to assemble, and people kept showing up ...

BRUNCH AT CAROL'S (photo credit: Sylvie Kimché)

After the club championship race, some people went to have brunch at Carol Tyler's place before the softball game.

  • Photo 73 Lynn Blackstone, Carsten Strandlod and Metta Strandlod soak in some sun on the terrace.
  • Photo 71 Mary Rosado and Lynn Blackstone lay back in the sun.
  • Photo 74 Carol Tyler readies Sid Howard for the food.
  • Photo 72 Here are Sid Howard and Carol Tyler a while later.  Observe very carefully that Carol Tyler was still eating, while Sid Howard had nothing but a contented smile on his face and two stacks of empty plates before him.  Impressive!
  • Photo 75 Jud Santos and Sarah Gross in the back, Dave Blackstone in front, all with very perplexing expressions.  Let's hope it was not the food.
