1998 Central Park Triathlon

These photos were captured from a segment of the program Running New York shown on the cable channel Madison Square Garden.

  • Photo 1: Scott Willett was going through the bike-run transition
  • Photo 2: Stacy Creamer was starting her run.  As she came up the steps, the official said, "Forty-two.   Stop at the top of the hill!"  Then she had to be physically restrained, because she would have stepped right into the path of the bikers.  On the soundtrack, a loud female voice could be heard: "Go, Stacy!" Also there was a male voice (Stuart Calderwood?) saying, "You are two minutes back.  Two minutes back!"  Stacy finished second in this race, the only triathlon that she does all year.
  • Photo 3: This is the moment that we all waited for --- the winner (and defending champion) Scott Willett breaking the tape!  As soon as Scott finished, he took off his shoes and fell backwards into the pool.  "Ahhhhhh, tradition" he exclaimed.
  • Photo 4: In the post-race interview, while still standing in the pool, Scott said, "It feels good to push as hard as you can go and have nothing left.  That is what matters, not winning.  If you win, it is like... eh ... you know ... a bonus.
