1998 NYRRC Cross Country Championships

PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 1: Ramon Bermo said, "Good morning to everyone --- except the guy with the camera pointed at me."  And a good morning to you too, Ramon.
  • Photo 2: Ramon Bermo debriefs Tim Evans, who is not familiar with the course.  Let's see, a mile in the flat and just a few bumps after that.
  • Photo 3: J.P. Cheuvront was asking everyone and anyone to see if there is any interest in running back to East Village after the races.  Hey, we thought the 1970's were over a long time ago and Stu Mittelman is not training anymore.  Bola Awofeso almost took up the offer, but he thought that the Jets game was higher on his priority list.   (Postscript: The same J.P. Cheuvront would go on to win the Delaware Marathon in December --- so this is the true path to nirvana?")
  • Photo 4: Tony Ruiz says that he requires good stretching at his old age.
  • Photo 5: At the starting line are Bill Dunlap, Ramon Bermo, Tony Ruiz and David Pullman.  Tony said, "No pictures before the race!  I'm going to kick your butt if you do that!"

OPEN MEN'S RACE

  • Photo 11: The most impressive view at cross-country races is the start.
  • Photo 12: Jud Santos hits the first hill after the bridge, about 1.3 miles into the race.  The cameraperson obviously would not position himself anywhere else other than some hilltop.
  • Photo 13: Tyronne Culpepper
  • Photo 14: Doug Kabbash
  • Photo 15: David Pullman
  • Photo 21: With two hundred meters left in the race, Ramon Bermo is the team leader.
  • Photo 22: Carmine Petracca wore another item from his extensive collection of non-orange singlets (we know that he has a purple one, a green one, a black one, a brown one, ...).
  • Photo 23: Tony Ruiz is in a packed finish.  Watch the animal come out of him ...
  • Photo 24: Kevin Arlyck drives on to finish just one second behind Jud Santos.
  • Photo 25: Tyronne Culpepper
  • Photo 26: Doug Kabbash
  • Photo 27: John Sargent
  • Photo 28: Luca Trovato

WOMEN

  • Photo 31: Stacy Creamer was sixth overall in the Open Women's race.  Here she is about a quartermile from the finish, all clear behind her and only Jean Chodnicki (of Warren Street) in front.
  • Photo 32: Lynn Blackstone in the Masters Women's race.
  • Photo 33: Mary Ellen Howe is trying to tell Jim Collins when her last race was.  It could have been the Mini-marathon, but she might have dropped out of that one ...

MASTERS MEN'S RACE

  • Photo 41: Sid Howard tells Raphael Devalle what this is all about.  This would be the latter's first cross country race ever in Van Cortlandt Park.
  • Photo 42: Alan Ruben and Efrain Gonzalez at the starting line.
  • Photo 43: Here is the panoramic shot of the mass start.
  • Photo 44: At the top of the first hill after the bridge (about 1.3 miles into the race), Stuart Calderwood was just ahead of Alan RubenTom Hartshorne was in the same pack of front runners.
  • Photo 45: John Kenney was a little bit more patient, and he would pick off many of the people in front.
  • Photo 46: Jeff Kisseloff ran every cross country race this season
  • Photo 47: Sid Howard
  • Photo 48: Efrain Gonzalez and John Gleason
  • Photo 49: Edwin Fajardo
  • Photo 51: At the top of the last uphill before the bridge (about 2.7 miles into the race), Alan Ruben is slightly ahead of Stuart Calderwood.
  • Photo 52: Right behind them is Tom Hartshorne.
  • Photo 53: Right behind them is John Kenney.
  • Photo 54: Jeff Kisseloff
  • Photo 55: Sid Howard
  • Photo 56: As we looked for more of our Masters teammates, we found instead ... Ann Snoeyenbos, NYU triathlete-librarian who is well-known to us as the co-star with Scott Willett in the recent NBC television special.
  • Photo 57: Efrain Gonzalez
  • Photo 59: Let it be said the loudest (and most orange) group of onlookers were gathered at the bridge.

POST-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 61: Kevin Arlyck, Carsten Strandlod and John Kenney.  John's reflection was that it was a great turnout today.  How can we tell?  Just by counting the number of bright orange track suits in the crowd today.
  • Photo 62: Stuart Calderwood and Alan Ruben chat after the race.  Stuart passed Alan at the end, and was very quick to point out that he did not do a marathon two weeks ago like Alan did.
  • Photo 63: Here is what Stuart Calderwood received for his troubles this morning.  This is even customized for this occasion, unlike the bulk-ordered mass merchandise items that they usually hand out.  After seeing this photo, someone who needs to get a life (and a job) wrote: "Is it just me, or does the trailing runner depicted on Stuart's award look a lot like Alan Ruben?  I know you said the awards were customized for this race, but I never thought the NYRRC would be so on the ball (or prescient)."
  • Photo 64: Jud Santos models the new singlet.
  • Photo 65: Not all photograph targets are compliant, as some (like Ross Galitsky) have to be wrestled into submission.  This photo was taken by Stuart Calderwood, who kept repeating, "I got to use the camera.  I got to use the camera."

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Photo 67: We have no idea who these girls are.  But they were there on the subway train on the way back, and their likenesses were used for demonstration. We swear that this is the truth, as David Pullman (who left with four guys, not four girls, this time) is our witness.  Alternately, they are known as collateral damage in tradespeak.

OBLIGATORY SKIN PICTURE

  • Photo 99: Just the usual nude picture.   No big deal.

THE BOLA AWOFESO COLLECTION

  • Photo 71: At the start, Tyronne Culpepper stands out from the crowd
  • Photo 72: Ramon Bermo and Carmine Petracca head into the hills
  • Photo 73: John Sargent is being pursued by Luca Trovato
