Pride Five Miler
PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
1: Mary Rosado, Lucy White, Tyronne Culpepper
and Ramon Bermo wave to the camera. Ramon filed his
usual complaint, "Must you start so soon? Couldn't
we just have a few private moments to ourselves first?"
- Photo
2: Carsten Strandlod is hoping to continue his
PR-setting streak today. He still does not have a club singlet,
but he has found a fake orange-colored singlet. He knows
that he will not be photographed without orange. Hear ye!
Hear ye!
- Photo
4: Mary Rosado does a warm-up run on a very warm
day with lousy air quality.
COMMUNITY RUN (2 MILER)
- Photo
5: John Sargent set a PR of 12:09 in this race
(well, he has never ran this distance before). His mile
splits were 5:40 (on the uphill mile going out) and 6:29 (on the
downhill mile coming back). Ouch!
- Photo
6: John Sargent, M.D., does the post-mortem analysis
with Devon Sargent ("the faster one in their household")
providing counsel. This is John's fourth race ever, and
he is planning on the next one. Given his experience today,
he is thinking about a mile race on the track. Good (and
safe) idea!
FIVE MILE RACE (West 93rd Street)
- Photo
11: Our team leaders were Alan Ruben and Ramon
Bermo. Ramon has made a habit of using the metronomic
Alan as a benchmark of his own pace.
- Photo
12: Carsten Strandlod thought that he was doing
this as an individual accomplishment. Little did he know
that the team would have to count on him ...
- Photo
13: Another piece of team running with Lucy White
and Audrey Kingsley.
- Photo
14: Yet another piece of team running with Kevin Arlyck
and Raphael Devalle. Neither one of them has a team
uniform yet.
- Photo
15: For contrast, here is Mary Rosado's solo effort
in her one-of-a-kind team uniform.
FIVE MILE RACE (East 93rd Street)
- Photo
20: Marty Stanton tells Eric:
"Look at the camera and smile!"
- Photo
21: Alan Ruben does his usual thing: an age-group
win with a team-leading performance.
- Photo
22: Ramon Bermo apologized to the web photograher
later: "Usually, I would say hello to you. But I was
really not feeling good at that point." Well, he had
better focus on holding off that New York Harrier (Steve
Marsalese) behind him. For the record, not only did
Ramon hold his pursuer off, he also passed the man in front of
him (Alfonso Polonia).
- Photo
23: Tim Evans is the third scoring club member,
although he wears a Cambridge Sports Union singlet.
- Photo
24: Michael Garland is the fourth scoring club
member, although he is in serious danger of being disqualified
for not having his 'race number visible at all times'.
- Photo
25: Our first woman Alayne Adams is running away
from our fifth man, Carsten Strandlod.
- Photo
26: A gloomy picture of Jud Santos, who had the
proverbial bad day. Take a look around him to see the company
that he keeps (let us see, someone twice his weight and wearing
a red BAMA shirt and some guy pushing a baby stroller ...).
- Photo
27: Our second and third women, Yumi Ogita and
Rae Baymiller, are being encouraged by cheerleader Dan
Hamner (in red).
- Photo
28: Tyronne Culpepper was hoping that the photographer
would not see him. As Ramon Bermo noted, "Tyronne
was ahead of Alan and I after the first half mile. I really
wanted to reach out and pull him back."
- Photo
29: Mary Rosado heads towards the finish, and uses
her track sprinting credentials to outkick Diane Kenna
(New York Harriers).
POST RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
30: Stacy Creamer, Irene
Jackson and Sylvie Kimché did not race today, using
all sorts of excuses (such as post-marathon recovery and chronic
back pain)
- Photo
31: What is Bola Awofeso trying to explain
to Lucy White? The art of DNF for a limo ride (at the Rock
'n' Roll Marathon last weekend)?
- Photo
32: Raphael Devalle and Dan Hamner are hydrating.
This is Raphael's first race for the club. He comes to us
with a sub-3 hour marathon time, although he has never done track
workouts before. So some of this is quite new to him.
- Photo
33: Also hyrdating is Joey Ruben. According
to his mom, this child is tall and thin for his age. Need
we wonder why? Everything is working according to plan ...
- Photo
34: The good news for Joey is that mom (Gordon Bakoulis)
and dad (Alan Ruben) are going to take him to the beach.
- Photo
35: Kevin Arlyck said, "Please don't take
my photo. I had a bad race." Not to worry, because
there are no minimum performance requirements as such. If
there were, the guy in the next photo would have been erased from
the face of the earth.
- Photo
36: After a dismal performance, Jud Santos said,
"I am useless. I should not be going out to Fire Island
on weekends." So why does he still have a big smile
on his face?
- Photo
37: Michael Garland is missing the letters CEN
on his singlet. Is there a mystical significance?
- Photo
38: Mary Rosado and Audrey Kingsley are
munching on post-race goodies. Audrey is very happy because
this is the first race ever in which she managed to record all
the splits on her watch (6:25, 6:28, 6:49, 6:56, 6:23) and she
has been doing many, many races.
- Photo
41: Jackie Cortes is rehabilitating herself from
a serious injury. She did not run very hard today.
She shows us how her arm has recovered.
MISSING PHOTOS
- In the middle of the race, Jud Santos
came to a dead halt, arms on hips, bending over and hyperventilating.
When Tyronne Culpepper saw Jud in this state, his first
thought was, "Where is our web photographer? This would
have been the greatest photo ever." Sorry, we were
not there, so you will have to use your imagination.
- None of our Italians were seen at the race today.
What happened to them? They must have been all watching
Gli Azzurri play Norway in the World Cup game starting
at 1030am and singing Va, pensiero in chorus.
Upon reading the above, Michele Tagliati sent in this note:
"As you properly noticed the absence of the small but colorful
Italian contingent, I feel I have to spend a word in our defense
... Luca Trovato is out west (Napa Valley) to shoot one
of his beautiful photo reportages, I was on call at Mount Sinai
and I think Carmine Petracca was working at the UN on Saturday.
Anyway, we were definitely all watching the Italian triumph over
Norway. For the record, we were singing - with the right hand
on the heart - Fratelli d'Italia (the official italian
anthem) and not Va, pensiero (the much more beautiful Verdi's
aria that many in Italy believe should be our national anthem)
..."
