1998 Henry Isola 4 Mile Run

This race was the opening race of the cross-country season.  The race was run under summer-like conditions --- hot temperature, sunny (completely completely), hard and dry ground, ...

  • Photo 1: For this race, Jud Santos wore a black singlet, which was not standard club issue.  Mary Rosado offered to lend him her jog bra the next time.  Jud's response was unprintable (but not because of any obcenity).
  • Photo 2: Tim Robinson, Jud Santos and Larry Glazer displayed their stuff.  In the case of Tim and Jud, they were holding the Olympics-style medals that they won for placing in their age group.  "Don't leave any race without it!"  In the case of Larry, he held up his MetroCard. "Don't leave home without it!"  (Jud Santos pointed out that Larry's MetroCard is not just any card, but the 7-day Unlimited Ride MetroCard Gold variety.  As such, its monetary worth is several orders of magnitude greater than the Woolworth's discount medals)
  • Photo 3: Mary Rosado showed us her medal, to be added to her collection of hundreds.
  • Photo 4: Joe Simonte showed us his medal, which he rated as 'not bad looking'.  Joe has accumulated hundreds of these objects already.
  • Photo 12: Here is a closeup of the medal.  This is the classical toypiece that can be bought from Woolworth's for less than 50 cents.   Hey, the race entry fee was only $3! (Note: the medal in this photo was won by Roland Soong.  The fact that even this guy won something by running a personal worst time probably diminished the value of the awards for the other winners ...)
  • Photo 5: In fact, they gave out so many of these medals that it was easier to track who didn't get one.  Here are two of the less fortunate ones: Jonathan Federman and Seth Okrend.   Jonathan had the misfortune of being in the wrong age group.  Seth was ... ahem ... just plain out of shape.
  • Photo 6:  Here is another less fortunate one: Michael Robinson, who had been out of running for a long time.   He wanted to know if the fact that he has not paid his dues would affect his club standing.  Hmmm!  That assumes that anyone actually keep track of such things ...
  • Photo 7: Here is the interclub socializing portion of the post-race activities.  The guy next to Jud Santos is Herbie Medina, formerly of Central Park Track Club and now with Millrose.  Herbie was a legend in his own time --- it would take to long to explain what we mean ...
  • Photo 8: Jud Santos is shown here with his New York Flyer friend Francine Alfandary.  Such friendships are important, because she helped Jud cut in the line for water, to the chagrin of everyone else behind.
  • Photo 9: Mary Rosado flexed her muscles.  She was going to do a 12 mile run later.
  • Photo 10: Jonathan Federman rated this race as being significantly easier than the half-marathon (something called the Half-Wit Marathon somewhere in Pennsylvania) he ran on the previous weekend. He finished that one in about 3 hours.  Before you think that was terribly slow, you should note that the winning time in that trail run was 1:42.  In lieu of a water station, they offered beer at the eleventh mile mark.  Is that how the race got its title?
  • Photo 11: On the very long subway ride back home were Michael Robinson, Aimee Berg, Tim Robinson and Larry Glazer.  What would we all do without our New York Times?
