1998 Kurt Steiner
Cross Country 5K
Our regular photographer ran the race himself, but
we were fortunate to have Larry Glazer to step in for the
day. Take pictures he did, almost 50 of them. However,
Larry is not responsible for the annotations that follow, so please
don't blame him.
PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
1: Carsten Strandlod, Roland
Soong and Mary Rosado are the first victims of the
photographer du jour. While Carsten and Mary are
oblivious of the perils, Roland is keenly aware of the photographer's
presence.
- Photo
2: Jud Santos displays his bag. So what is
in it?
- Photo
3: Frank Schiro holds a liquid container in his
hand. What is in it? The color looks funny.
Is it a sports drink? Is it a urine sample?
- Photo
4: Sid Howard is working himself up for his game
face.
- Photo
6: Doug Kabbash and his friend Julie change
in the grandstand.
- Photo
7: Frank Schiro probably lent his singlet to his
friend Brian Barry.
- Photo
8: Jud Santos, Anselm Labourne, Sid Howard
and David Pullman hold a power meeting.
- Photo
9: Mary Rosado, Denise Crain, John
Sargent, David Pullman and Jonathan Federman
got together. For a club as big as the Central Park Track
Club, some of these people have never met the others. Among
this group, Denise is a track sprinter, Jonathan lives in Philadelphia,
David is a cross-country runner masking as a sprinter, John is
a rookie and Mary is everything (40m sprint to marathon, plus
rock climbing).
- Photo
10: The cheering squad included Gordon Bakoulis
and Joey Ruben. Gordon is the coach of the Moving
Comfort New York team.
- Photo
11: The starting lineup is the most impressive sight
at cross-country races.
OVERPASS (1st TIME)
- Photo
21: The leader at this point
is Tesfaye Bekele, who has probably been in the lead in
most local races this year than not.
- Photo
22: Jud Santos has the no-look running style.
- Photo
23: Jeff Kisseloff is in the middle of a pack.
Victor Diaz is the guy with the red bandana.
- Photo
24: Look at Sid Howard and see how his feet are
in a blur. Yes, we're talking about turnover speed.
- Photo
25: David Pullman is chasing the girls, as usual.
- Photo
26: After this picture was taken, Doug Kabbash
ran up and told Roland Soong that he made it into the picture
because he was close behind. As we can see, he was only
half-right. Seth Okrend got the other half right..
- Photo
27: Mary Rosado is our first woman runner.
- Photo
28: Our number one fan Frank Schiro directs
the traffic.
FINISH LINE
- Photo
31: Anselm Labourne is our
team leader. He was actually quite surprised that he ended
up fourth in his age group because he thought the competition
should have been tougher than that.
- Photo
32: We are sure that Jud Santos will be examining
this picture for his form in the sprint finish. Our analysis
is that his left shoulder is too much forward causing inefficiency
and there is also no evidence of any knee lift.
- Photo
33: Jeff Kisseloff squints at the finish line.
- Photo
34: Efrain Gonzalez is mounting his comeback with
a couple of cross-country races.
- Photo
35: David Pullman started with his orange t-shirt,
which is now in his hand, because it was warm out there.
- Photo
36: Roland Soong obviously does not believe in
'Lady First' as he outsprints a member of the opposite sex with
10 meters to go. No mercy!
- Photo
37: Jonathan Federman looks to the right, while
someone sneaks past on the left.
- Photo
38: Mary Rosado deploys her sprinter's speed at
the finish. In the last 10 meters, she passed Roslyn
Schloss, to the sound of a teammate yelling, "Elbow her,
Roslyn! Elbow!"
- Photo
39: Brian Barry is a certified two-pack-a-day smoker.
Just ask him, and he will yank out a pack to show his credentials.
- Photo
40: Our photo gallery includes our friends, such as Francine
Alfandary (of the New York Flyers).
- Photo
41: Of course, our chief spy Frank Schiro keeps
tab on everybody's time.
POST-RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
51: Mary Rosado, Carsten
Strandlod, Roland Soong and John Sargent do
the post-mortem analyses before rigor mortis sets in.
- Photo
52: Jeff Kisseloff and Sid Howard
wait for Jeff's fiancé Marie to pull something out of the
bag. What is it? We don't know. But one of the principals
in this photo informed us later that it was their weekly dose
of steroids. Hmmm ...
- Photo
53: Frank Schiro, Mary Rosado and Sid
Howard. How come Frank didn't run?
- Photo
54: The socialization is not restricted to intra-club
mixing. Here is Jud Santos with someone (of the opposite
sex), Liane Montesa from Millrose, who said, "What
a nice web site!" Thanks.
- Photo
55: The regular photographer offered some tips.
"Rule # 1: Skin sells". So here is Carsten
Strandlod in a state of déshabillement.
- Photo
56: In fact, it is not difficult to have nude pictures,
because people will gladly pose. Here is Jud Santos
as well, although the signficance of that plastic cup in his mouth
eludes us. Sitting on the ground behind Jud is John Sargent,
who appears to be reading the writing on the inside of his neon-green
Nike shoes. There is someone behind John doing bends whom
we suspect is Kevin Arlyck, and so we asked Kevin for verification.
After looking at the photo, Kevin said, "The grey singlet
was right, I can bend that far, but my shoes definitely did not
have any white showing like that."
- Photo
57: "Rule # 2: Violence sells." So here
is a bruised Millrose runner, John McManus, who fell on
the course. John was in the "I'm gray but I'm not old"
Nike commercial.
POST-RACE ACTIVITIES (PART II --- photos by the regular guy)
- Photo
61: Mary Beth Mulholland
and Frank Schiro, in his North Jersey Masters t-shirt.
- Photo
62: Sid Howard tells Anselm Labourne that
this photo will be posted on the web site. "What web
site?" said Anselm. So Sid proceeded to explain how
to get here. So, Anselm, if you ever make it here, here
is a big HELLO!
- Photo
63: Herbie Medina and Efrain Gonzalez wish
to advertise themselves as two handsome and available Latino guys.
- Photo
64: Denise Crain is with Mary Rosado.
- Photo
65: While others stand around, Anselm Labourne,
Sid Howard and Mary Rosado went for a cool-down
run. Sid began his invitation with, "I assume everybody
is going for this cool-down run", which was met with giggles
from a few people (including Kevin Arlyck who ran 18 miles
the day before, Carsten Strandlod who ran 17 miles the
day before and Roland Soong who believes it is wrong to
run more than 20 miles a week).
- Photo
66: Frank Schiro posed with greatness in the form
of the race winner Tesfaye Bekele (in a time of 15:32).
- Photo
67: Jud Santos is drooling at the sight of the
mountain of medals, flanked by our drooling friends Doug Hegley
(of the New York Harriers) and John Ward (of the
New York Flyers, aka the only man who can out-dance Sid
Howard).
- Photo
68: Jud Santos did in fact pick up a medal,
while his buddy David Pullman did not. But David
won the bigger prize because he left with four women (yes, guys,
eat your heart out!). When David was told later about the
above report, he said, "You are dangerous! I must watch
out for you!" Thank you, the only reason that I do
this is because I crave attention ... NOT!
- Photo
69: Here is a happy Seth Okrend with his medal.
When his name was announced, the announcer even gave him a free
plug about his musician credentials.
- Photo
70: Of course, the value of these medals are diminished
by the fact that even very slow people (as this person) can win
them. For the record, he was fifth-place in his age group
in this race. Hard to believe, isn't it?
