Not Quite the New York City Marathon 5K Run

The guest photographer this week was Audrey Kingsley, about whom much more will be said later.  Of course, she is absolved of all liabilities insofar as the annotations are concerned.

PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 1: To familiarize herself with the range-finder capabilities of the camera, Audrey asked a seldom-photographed teammate Roland Soong to pose.
  • Photo 2: Now on to find teammates amidst the mob scene.  In this picture were Roland Soong, Stuart Calderwood and Stacy Creamer.
  • Photo 3: It obviously  helps to have some elevation for teammatespotting, like standing on the wooden barrier.
  • Photo 4: In this picture of the front row, we can see Roland Soong, Stuart Calderwood, Fasil Yilma and ... Herbie Medina.

THREE MILE MARK

  • Photo 11: From a far distance, someone who looks like Stuart Calderwood is approaching the finish line.  Stuart still has not cleared waivers to run under our brand name.
  • Photo 12: The second finisher from the Central Park Track Club is Carmine Petracca, who did not have a race number.  He just made it to the race from work.  He was a bit short on confidence about his prospects today, because he said that he stayed up late last night smoking cigarettes with his brother.
  • Photo 13: That means that our official team leader today was Jud Santos.  He was extremely confident today because he took a shot of vodka (with 7-up) last night.  But this super fuel accelerant could not boost him to outsprint someone a hundred pounds heavier than him.
  • Photo 14: Fasil Yilma loves short distance race, because he does not have to stop and stretch.
  • Photo 15: Who is this?  Or rather, what is this?  It is the top of someone's head.  Ordinarily, this would be unrecognizable except that the gravity-defying way in which the hair flows indicates that it must be Stacy Creamer.  (See supporting evidence)
  • Photo 16: Here comes Roland Soong trying to hold his composure in front of screaming teammates (Edwin Fajardo and Audrey Kingsley).  He had no idea that he was being pursued by an orange-less teammate Doug Kabbash, who later wrote: "I have to thank you because you helped me to achieve a recent personal record. I couldn't believe it. There you were right in front of me. Okay...a minute ahead of me. As hard as I tried, I couldn't close in. You were lightning! I never did get to see what the front of your orange tank top looked like. What did you have for breakfast anyway?"
  • Photo 17: Bola Awofeso is reputedly part of an insurgency who refuse to wear any club uniform until the long-awaited new singlets arrive.
  • Photo 18: Audrey also made a stab at still-life photography.  We will indulge her wishes; after all there are no costs associated with film processing or web server storage.

POST-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 21: After the race, Edwin Fajardo requested a photo with Bola Awofeso.  "I want a photo with the rock star!" he said.
  • Photo 22: Avert your eyes at the sight of Bola Awofeso applying vaseline between his legs!  As soon as he started doing that, everybody else said, "Where is the camera?  This is exactly the sort of thing for the web site."  He received the chafing from the 3+ hour run yesterday.
  • Photo 23: Eve Kaplan came by to say hello.  She will no doubt tell her Boston Running Club friends to check it out.
  • Photo 24: Stacy Creamer finally got a 17-second PR.  She would have a few more PRs but for some mysterious conspiracies (like mismeasured courses at the 1997 Queens College Point 5K, the 1997 Norway Run 5K and the Incline Valley 5K).  As she recounted it, her previous PR was set at the 1997 Rabbit Run 5K, mainly thanks to her determination to keep teammate Rachel Latessa in sight.
  • Photo 25: Stuart Calderwood shows us the trophy that he won for finishing ninth overall.
  • Photo 26: Joe Simonte shows us the trophy for 2nd place male 70-74.  First place went to Millrose's Bill Fortune, former Central Park Precinct Commander.
  • Photo 27: Stacy Creamer and Stuart Calderwood have their hands full of their prizes: trophies, watches, caps and each other.
  • Photo 31: Audrey Kingsley originally entered to run this race.  When she got there, someone asked her, "How many serious New York City Marathon runners do you see here today?"   Besides she wanted to do a long depletion run later.  So she decided to be our photographer instead.  But here is her race number, for the record, and duly noted to be a Male Masters number.
  • Photo 32: Audrey Kingsley watched the awards ceremony with obvious boredom.  Since she did not run the race, she could not win anything.  The fact was that even if she walked the race, she would have won a team award.
  • Photo 33: There was a random prize drawing for all the participants, and one of the winners was race number M348, which belonged to none other than Audrey Kingsley!  Here is the smiling Audrey displaying her collection of the cap, the watch and the book of 1000 Healthy Tips for Women.  Her teammates, who had to work hard to earn their goodies, were obviously outraged.
  • Photo 34: Already Audrey is hard at work setting up her new 'Inspire' watch ...
