This photo was taken at the New
York Road Runners' Club Night on February 22, 1997. These people
represented the Central Park Track Club in accepting the
second place Open A Team award. What a politically correct picture
of multicultural diversity!!!
This leads to the obvious question,
"Were these blokes recruited just for this photo shoot to erect
a façade of multicultural diversity?" After all, at least two
of them are known to be professional models. Do you know which two?
(6/18/97) By popular demand,
a hot spot has been placed on the face of one of the professional
models. Can you tell who the other one is?
An astute reader (who needs to get a life!) has
pointed out that the above picture (which was scanned from the New
York Running News, April/May 1997 edition) was different from
the one that was published in the CPTC Newsletter (Spring
97 edition), as shown below.
The difference between the two photos is the absence/presence
of the trophy. Who cares? We do, because there have been several
stories, some diametrically opposite to others.
According to tradition, the team trophy is kept
by the top scorer for the team. For 1997, that would be Alan
Ruben, who was ahead of Jud Santos. Here are the various
stories that are floating around.
- The caption in the CPTC Newsletter photo
reads: "Alan Ruben and Jud Santos silently
wrestle for the team trophy as (the other team members) stand
by." We categorically reject the idea that such behavior
would ever occur among our members.
- In the same section of the CPTC Newsletter,
another story alleges that "Alan Ruben, who turned
40 this spring, offered the vase to the # 2 guy, saying, 'I'll
need the space in my cabinet for all those trophies I'll be winning
this year.'" Now that is more like it!
- But aren't we forgetting that Alan's wife, Gordon
Bakoulis, who is the best female runner ever from New York
City (with due respect to Nina Kuscsik, Kathrine Switzer
and company), has the biggest collection of hardware already so
that Alan may have been warned not to bring any more (especially
a second-place trophy) home?
An irate reader wanted to know where the picture
of our women was. Here are the people who accepted the award for
2nd place Open A Team. Yet another politically correct picture of
multicultural diversity?
