1500m

  • Photo 1: Paul Stuart-Smith jockeyed for position at the start of the open 1500m. (Credit: Paul's singlet was borrowed from Stuart Calderwood)
  • Photo 2: Paul ran the first few laps between two Westchester Track Club runners.
  • Photo 3: Round and round they went.   Before the race, Paul stated that his target time for the 800m split was 2:14 done in 67+67 --- and not 65+69.  His actual splits for the first 4 laps were 32+33+34+35 (very easy to remember!).  That meant he ran 65+69, exactly what he did not want to do.  Afterwards, he also said, "Please don't print those splits."  The public's right to know supercedes privacy concerns.
  • Photo 4: Still some more ...
  • Photo 5: "Houston, we have a liftoff!"  as Paul goes airborne.
  • Photo 6: Anthony Baker rounding the curve.
  • Photo 21: Sid Howard keeps the jog alive in his warmup, stopping to talk to someone.
  • Photo 22: Sid Howard at the starting line with another 60-year-old, Vic Zwolak.
  • Photo 23: Once the race got started, the two broke away from the rest of the pack.
  • Photo 24: Most of the race was a patient waiting game.
  • Photo 25: And wait some more ...
  • Photo 26: The last lap was just a 200m sprint, and Sid held on to win, 4:48.4 to 4:48.7.  (This was some 11 seconds slower than the world record.)

400m

  • Photo 11: A picture of intense concentration --- Denise Whitaker-Crain.
  • Photo 12: Denise drives towards the finish in 1:07.1
  • Photo 13: Les Wright Jr. gets ready.
  • Photo 14: Les drives towards the finish in 1:01.30.  This is a mixed age-group race, and Les was in fact first in the men 55-59 group.
  • Photo 38: Alan Bautista complained before the race, "The only pictures that you have of me are either at the start or when I come in last.  I want to see some action photos."  Our answer: "Alan, you run too fast."  Indeed, Alan looked like a blur in this photo.
  • Photo 39: This is Alan coming in, not in last place, but second last.  For us to satisfy Alan's demands, he would have to win a race by running slow.

3000m

  • Photo 41: This is a closeup of Jud Santos' new spikes, his first pair since high school.  He says that they are very difficult to run in for more than 10 minutes.  In other words, this will force him to keep the time to sub-10 minutes ...
  • Photo 42: Jud Santos at the starting line, with fellow competitors like Alan Ruben's favorite runner Don Didonato.
  • Photo 43: For most of the race, Jud was towing Hugh Sweeney along.  Before the race, Hugh had warned Jud, "I am dangerous --- if I finish."
  • Photo 44: Eventually, Hugh made up his mind that he was going to finish and pulled away from Jud.
  • Photo 45: This left Jud with the revised target of finishing under 10 minutes, before his feet blew up in those new shoes.  He made it by one second.

800m

  • Photo 51: Mary Rosado at the starting line.
  • Photo 52: Mary said that this was the first time in months that she ran without feeling fatigue in her legs.
  • Photo 53: Frank Handelman at the start of his race.
  • Photo 54: Frank drives towards the finish.
  • Photo 55: Noah Perlis said that he was here today to do some portion of an 800m.  He ended up finishing the whole thing.
  • Photo 56: At the starting line are Raphael Devalle, Joey Gonzalez and Tom Hartshorne.
  • Photo 57: This turned out to be a runaway victory for Tom Hartshorne, made easy by the fact that his favorite rival Duane Green was absent.
  • Photo 58: When someone saw Raphael Devalle's race number, he said, "Raphael, are you going to run 2:29 today?"  No, it was actually a 2:25 PR.
  • Photo 59: Anselm Labourne ran an exceptional 1:56.24 (56 second first quarter).

200m

  • Photo 61: Tom Hartshorne takes a stab at the 200m as a workout.  He finished in 26.18, saying, "This is hard work!"

POLICE BLOTTER

  • Photo 98: Sarah Gross did not intend to be at the Armory at all.  She rode her bike up to Nyack early in the morning, as is her custom.  On her way back, she was stopped on the bridge by some guy wielding a broken bottle who demanded her bike.  Afterwards, she went to the police to report the robbery.  She was riding in a police car looking for the bandit in the neighborhood.  Instead, they found a trio of cyclists with an extra bike --- it was Stephanie Gould with Sarah's bike!  Stephanie had seen that guy fell off the bike because he could not handle the clipless pedals.  Afterwards, Sarah came across Mary Rosado in this neighborhood, and they came down to the Armory to see everyone.   What an adventure!  Sarah said, "This is definitely website material." FASHION CORNER

  • Photo 99: Mary Rosado would like you to pay attention to her blue-orange-white shoes, which are a perfect match for the blue-orange top and shorts.  But the pulled-down black tights are another story ...
