Fred Lebow Cross Country 5K

PRE-RACE POSES

  • Photo 01: For Audrey Kingsley, happiness is when she sees the camera.
  • Photo 02: This is a rare photo of Salih Talib, wearing a one-of-a-kind Central Park Track Club 'uniform'.
  • Photo 03: Guenter Erich catches a little sun on this beautiful day.
  • Photo 04: Tivon Jacobson was warned that he would be unidentifiable during the race because he is not in orange.
  • Photo 05: David Pullman came, saw and said, "I'm early today.  I think I'll go and do a warmup run, and I'll come back and register at the last minute."
  • Photo 06: This was perhaps not the best organized cross country race of the year.  There were more people than usual because this is a scoring race, and the New York Road Runners Club was holding another race inside Central Park earlier in the morning.  One of the problems was that there were not even enough blank entry forms.  Here Stacy Creamer and Audrey Kingsley are scouring for blank forms.
  • Photo 07: Jeff Kisseloff and his wife Marie wait at the start.  Are they looking for the spot where they first met?
  • Photo 08: Sylvie Kimché asks, "I can never remember your name."  "It's Jeff."  "No, I mean your last name." "Kisseloff."  P.S.  The guy in the background pointing his finger is Frank "Zappa" Schiro.
  • Photo 09: Apart from running well, Sandra Olivo can also strike a good pose.
  • Photo 10: This is Alayne Adams's first excursion to Van Cortlandt Park.  So she is receiving a debriefing from Jesus Montero --- you know, one mile in the flats around the flagpoles in the corners, into the rolling hills, cross the bridge around the big hills, back across the bridge and into the flats again.

AT THE STARTING LINE

  • Photo 11:  The person who had the most fun was Sylvie Kimché who was following everyone around with J.R. Mojica's videocamera.  Or is someone else having even more fun by following Sylvie around with a camera ... ?
  • Photo 12: Team benefits include stretching exercises performed by world record holder Sid Howard on David Pullman.  In turn, Sid Howard gets a back rub from Tom Hartshorne.
  • Photo 13: To kill time, people start clowning for the photographer.
  • Photo 14: Pretty soon, ennui sets in on the crowd.
  • Photo 15: Ah, finally the men rush out in the mass start with the whole field strung out wide.

BRIDGE CROSSING (1 1/4 MILE INTO THE RACE)

  • Photo 21: The first Central Park Track Club runner to cross is Paul Stuart-Smith.  Right behind him was Stuart Calderwood.
  • Photo 22: Alan Ruben was actually quite a few seconds behind the team leaders at this point, which was enough to make Eric Aldrich wonder what is going on.  When Eric read this note, he said, "That was exactly what I was thinking about.  What was Alan Ruben doing back here?"  Well, Alan drinks Sharkade and likes to pounce from behind for the kill.
  • Photo 23: From left to right: Tyronne Culpepper, Salih Talib, Herbie Medina (Millrose) and Jack Brennan.  If Herbie was not sandwiched between two of our teammates, we would have cropped him right out of the picture.
  • Photo 24: This is Sid Howard, fresh from his thrilling Fifth Avenue Mile victory less than 24 hours ago.
  • Photo 25: David Pullman shows us who is number one.  Hey, let us see you do that AFTER the hills.
  • Photo 26: Brian Barry says that he ran Van Cortlandt Park in 15 minutes in 1973 while he was in high school.  Unfortunately, he did not remember to mention the fact that the distance was less than a 5K back then.
  • Photo 27: J.R. Mojica is a picture of quiet concentration.  Where is his designated substitute cameraperson?
  • Photo 28: All of a sudden, Guenter Erich is running a bunch of races after being quiet for years.  Later on, when we told Fritz Mueller that Guenter has been racing, Fritz could only exclaim, "Oh, my!"

BRIDGE CROSSING (2.6 MILES INTO THE RACE)

  • Photo 31: After going through the big hills, the team leader is still Paul Stuart-Smith.
  • Photo 32: Intensity and concentration --- Stuart Calderwood, with Alan Ruben right behind.
  • Photo 33: Fourth man on the team is Craig Chilton.
  • Photo 34: Fighting for the last scoring spot are Victor Osayi and Eric Aldrich, with Tom Hartshorne behind.  With half a mile left to go, the favorite has to be the 800m specialist, Tom Hartshorne, who would pass the other two.
  • Photo 35: Last guy to make the photo cut is Tyronne Culpepper as the photographer has to run to cover the separate women's race.

FIRST SMALL HILL AFTER THE BRIDGE CROSSING (1.3 MILE INTO THE RACE)

  • Photo 41: This picture of Alayne Adams is a shoo-in for one of our favorites for the year.  That leaves nine open slots left in our top ten.
  • Photo 42: Stacy Creamer finds this hill a hair-raising experience.
  • Photo 43: This is Audrey Kingsley's first encounter with this hill, and there are even bigger ones around the corner.  Afterwards, she said that they were not so tough as people say and she would do better the next time around for sure.  And, no, she did not fall flat on her face as she has been saying for weeks before the race.
  • Photo 44: Chugging along like a machine was Sandra Olivo.
  • Photo 45: Mary Rosado led the way for a bunch of orange-clad teenagers from the Fieldston school, which is located across the street from Van Cortlandt Park.
  • Photo 46: For those who don't know, this is our soccer-playing First Lady, Jane Kenney.  She was our third master, and helped the team to a second-place finish.
  • Photo 47: Carol Tyler started running cross country this year, and says she enjoys the experience.

THE FLATS (300m TO FINISH)

  • Photo 51: Alayne Adams has a very intense look.
  • Photo 52: Stacy Creamer has an even more intense look, if that is possible.
  • Photo 53: By contrast, Audrey Kingsley is very un-intense with that self-conscious smile.
  • Photo 54: If Audrey does not concentrate now, Sandra Olivo will catch her from behind!
  • Photo 55: Mary Rosado jumps on the grass not to take a short cut to get an advantage on Jane Kenney, but to soften the pounding on her feet.
  • Photo 56: Irene Jackson-Schon battles it out with a Fieldston girl.  Or is she trying to hide from the photographer?
