Frostbite 10 Miler

Audrey Kingsley

It snowed the night before, and the ground was covered with ice, especially in the northern section of the park.  The course was changed from the customary (4 mile loop + 6 mile loop) to twice the lower 5 mile loop.  Furthermore, the race was made into a fun run.  Right at the moment the race started, the skies opened up with a heavy icy downpour.  Did someone say 'fun'?

PRE-RACE PHOTOS

  • Photo 1: When Julian Allen found out that the race was turned into a fun run, it was hard to tell whether he was feeling relief or disappointment.
  • Photo 2: Kevin Arlyck showed us how to get changed by hopping on one leg over ice.
  • Photo 3: Carol Tyler must have checked the weather report and came out to improve on her 18th overall place performance in last week's rain storm.
  • Photo 4: Edwin Fajardo came to check out incriminating photos of himself.
  • Photo 5: Does Audrey Kingsley intend to hold her number (#507) in her mouth during the race?
  • Photo 6: Here is a bold one-legged fashion statement à la Flo Jo from someone wearing #507.
  • Photo 7: Audrey Kingsley shows us her team color --- the tiny hair band ...
  • Photo 8: Doug Kabbash and Julie Vignola checked out a digital camera, even as they were unknowingly the target of another digital camera.
  • Photo 9: Blair Boyer must be a little bit disappointed since he had pointed towards this race.
  • Photo 10: Rick Shaver got a groupie photo op with rock 'n roll star Bola Awofeso
  • Photo 11: The sneak attack: "Surprise! Surprise! You're on Candid Camera."  Afterwards, Margarita Cabrera said, "I'M GOING TO GET YOU!"

RACE TIME

  • Photo 21: This was a serene day in Central Park (when the rain pauses), as Gordon Bakoulis took Joey Ruben on a stroll near Cleopatra's Needle.
  • Photo 22: At the bottom of Cat Hill, Harry Morales flashed a smile.  Meanwhile, Alan Ruben was busy coordinating the family schedule with Gordon Bakoulis.
  • Photo 23: Tyronne Culpepper came through the mist by himself.
  • Photo 24: Julian Allen did the human wave by himself.
  • Photo 25: Edwin Fajardo looked like as if he thought this was fun.
  • Photo 26: Bola Awofeso had this piece of advice for the cameraman, "Go home!"  It is not clear whether he said this because he was concerned for the welfare of the cameraman or out of self-preservation.
  • Photo 27: What was there for Audrey Kingsley to celebrate about?  And did we hear the Rocky theme music in the background?
  • Missing Photo: Eve Kaplan was supposed to be in this race.   However, she did inform us beforehand: "Let me just say that I am registered to run the 10-miler this weekend, and it is also supposed to be cold and rainy again. I will look out my window this time, and if it's raining, I'm going back to bed! Unless, of course, it is sub-freezing, icy, sleeting, and dangerous, in which case I will probably run because everyone else will be at home, and I might just get another trophy!"

At this point of the race, ice particles were beginning to accumulate on the camera's LCD screen.  Time to go ...
