PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
01: Shepherding a large herd of NYU runners is their coach,
Ramon Bermo. It took him a while to realize that
he was being followed ...
- Photo
02: Here is your typical NYU runner, equipped appropriately
with angel wings and halo. After all, this is Halloween.
- Photo
03: It is the coach's job to make sure that the halo is
upright, the wings are balanced and the race number is pinned
correctly.
- Photo
04: Mary Rosado gets ready to race. It won't
be easy after last night's party.
- Photo
05: Scott Willett makes believe that he has a virtual
camera with which to threaten people.
- Photo
06: Early in the morning, Paul Stuart-Smith is
ambivalent about this prospects today. He says, "I
don't feel good, but that is not a good predictor. I've
felt bad and raced well. I've also felt bad and raced bad."
Final verdict: 16:29, neither too good nor too bad.
- Photo
07: Here are a couple of normal looking (so far) people:
Toby Tanser and Julia Casals. Toby has some
tricks in his bag, but he would not say out what they are ...
- Photo
08: Right before the race starts, Toby appears in his
superman ... eh, superwoman? ... costume. Now we understand
why he did not want to describe this before.
- Photo
09: Toby makes a final equipment adjustment. This
is not the best thing to wear on this warm and humid morning.
RACE TIME (2.1 MILE MARK)
- Photo
11: The race leader was Tesfaye Bekele, as usual.
In second place was a guy in leopard skin tights, neon green short
and flaming red wig. About the leader, Toby said, "At
one time, I lived in Sweden and Tesfaye lived in Norway.
We raced each other every weekend all over the place."
- Photo
12: This is Gordon Bakoulis' first race back since
giving birth to Sammy. From here, it is a long road to the
Olympics Marathon Trial next year.
- Photo
13: Diane Lebowitz's summarizes this race as "painful."
Right around this point of the race, she got stomach cramps.
- Photo
14: The person next to Jack Brennan is in luck
today, as we thought that he deserve some airtime for being next
to Jack.
- Photo
15: J.R. Mojica did not feel 100% right for this
race as he is nursing an injury.
FINISH LINE
- Photo
21: The Central Park Track Club cheering squad of Luca
Trovato, Stacy Creamer and Stuart Calderwood
are stationed near the finish line. Were they in shock to
see the guy in drag finishing second?
- Photo
22: Mary Messite travels incognito in blue and
black. We did not recognize her at the 2.1 mile mark until
she came right up to say hello.
- Photo
23: We are turning in this photo of someone running without
a number as evidence to prosecute for theft of services.
- Photo
24: Diane Lebowitz said, "I put on a spurt
near the end to pass a couple of women." Can you see
and feel the tension and pain?
- Photo
25: This is Mary Rosado's first race as a 50-year-old.
She must be thankful for that extra hour of sleep from the switch
to Daylight Savings Time after last night's party at the Cotton
Club in Harlem.
- Photo
26: J.R. Mojica has just put the 3 mile mark behind
him.
- Photo
27: Mindy Solkin starts her long day with a race
in the morning.
