1999 Survival of the Shawangunks

The following pictures appeared in our electronic mailbox sent from multiple anonymous sources.  Of course, this leaves us the very difficult (and very delightful) task of interpreting what is going on ...

GROUP PHOTO

  • Photo 11: The first group photo had 11people.

  • Photo 12: The second group photo had 18 people.  Some of these people hold hardware in their hands.  Also, please note NYU triathlon coach Scott Willett making his fashion statement on the right.

J. P. CHEUVRONT

  • Photo 01: J.P. Cheuvront bows his head and says a little prayer before the start of the race on the bike.

  • Photo 02: No time to lose for J.P in the transition.

  • Photo 03: But wait ... there is time for J.P. to sneak in a smile for the camera.

  • Photo 04: J.P. Cheuvront is doing some altitude running.  You can see for miles from this point, but J.P. is probably seeing stars in the his eyes.

  • Photo 05: Here are J.P. Cheuvront and his sister after the race, looking very solemn.

  • Photo 06: J.P. Cheuvront finally breaks out a smile for Guillermo Rojas and Ross Galitsky.

  • Photo 07: J.P. Cheuvront and Ramon Bermo look at the camera person with their heads tilted in the same angle.

  • Photo 08: Ramon Bermo flexes his arm muscles.  More interesting is J.P. Cheuvront in standard triathlete gear: soda in one hand, banana in the other hand, and towel around the lower body.  "Eat, drink and make merry!"

ROSS GALITSKY

  • Photo 13:  Standing in the early morning mist, Ross Galitsky receives a final tip from NYU cycling coach Guillermo Rojas.  Just a couple of weeks ago, G'Mo made us this promise: "I'll come running with you guys soon."  After reading the preceding printed quotation here, G'Mo wrote, "I'll be running with you starting on September 30th.  I need marathon help."

  • Photo 14: Ross Galitsky wears his all-black stealth gear, while others wear bright neon yellow/green.  Maybe he is hoping to sneak away under the cover of the morning fog.

  • Photo 15: Many hours later, Ross Galitsky smiles in the finish area.

  • Photo 16: Ross Galitsky has been a survivor many times, whereas this is Ramon Bermo is a first-timer.  Their expressions probably refect their experiences --- Ross has no sense of humor left, while Ramon is smiling.

  • Photo 17: Is that an award plaque we see in Ross's hand?

RAMON BERMO

  • Photo 21: The guy in red furthest away is Raqui Bermo, who has his shoulders exposed to instill fear in others about his power.  Unfortunately, he would get two flat tires, although he was never discouraged.  After the second flat tire, he was in last place but he put it together and passed many people.  What a heart!  The other guy in red is Thomas Pennell --- he's got those orange gloves!

  • Photo 22: Raqui Bermo gets out of his bike gear in the transition area in the looming shadow of an orange-clad person.

  • Photo 23: Yet another orange-clad person enters the observation gallery.

JULIE DENNEY

  • Photo 31: Julie Denney receives her 2nd overall finisher's award.  She had won the two previous years in a row, but lost this time to a professional.

  • Photo 32: Scott Willett and Julie Denney were the defending champions from last year.

POSTSCRIPT: After reading through this page, J. P. Cheuvront commented, "Aha!  I see that you've even got G'Mo on your payroll now."
