PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 01:  Another full-body shot of the group photo.
  • Photo 02:  Yet another full-body shot, this time in purple tone.  Strictly for nostalgia, when we come back to look at this twenty years from now and think of all the people that we have had the pleasure to know ...
  • Photo 00Jackie Cortes was looking for teammates, but found the photographer instead.
  • Photo 03:  And now for a couple of equally famous people from Ethiopia --- Fatuma Roba (Atlanta  Olympics Marathon champion and three-time Boston Marathon winner) and Derartu Tulu (Barcelona Olympics 10K champion and 2000 World Cross Country champion)
  • Photo 04:  And the Asian-Latin Americanist on our club insists on a photo of Yuko Arimori (Barcelona Olympics Marathon silver medalist from Japan) and Adriana Fernandez (1999 NYC Marathon champion from Mexico).
  • Photo 05:  This is a wide shot of the starting line.
  • Photo 06:  Somewhere in there, Mary Rosado is perplexed at being encircled by Jean and Jeanne from the Warren Street team.
  • Photo 07:  We don't know who came up with the idea, but these gals took off for warm-up sprints.  Hey, it's 90 degrees out there.  You are WARM!

5.1 MILE MARK

  • Photo 11:  The race itself was a runaway victory by Tegla Loroupe, who is a great hot-weather runner.
  • Photo 12: Margaret Schotte was our first finisher today.  She said, "I couldn't believe that Angell was not in front of me.  I keep saying that this is not right, this is not right."  On this very hot day, it was a matter of survival out there.  Whatever else, Margaret certainly had the best smile at this point of the race.  Of course, the fact that we had a cheering squad of Stacy Creamer and Craig Chilton here is enough to make (almost) anyone smile.
  • Photo 13: Stephanie Gould and Yumi Ogita.
  • Photo 14:  If you look at the group portrait, Margaret Angell has a team singlet.  She made the right decision to jettison it for the race.
  • Photo 15Audrey Kingsley looked good at this point and actually broke out a smile for the camera.  Earlier, she told someone "There will be no DNF today."  Although she did finish eventually, she had to get medical treatment afterwards.
  • Photo 16Mary Rosado says that a 10K race is equivalent to a marathon for someone else.
  • Photo 17Kim Mannen had another tough day at the races.  The track!  Kim, they are waiting for you down there!
  • Photo 18Sandra Scibelli is someone that we can recognize from a great distance away because of that swirling pony tail.
  • Photo 19:  Laura Miller did not realize that she was being featured on the cover this week.  In case she can't get back quick enough to view it, here is a reprise of that very expressive picture.  This picture of her in the race looks foggy --- could it be the sweat?
  • Photo 20Sylvie Kimché says that completing a 10K race is no small feat when her average mileage per week is less than 10 mile.
  • Photo 21Carol Tyler finishes first in her age group.
  • Photo 22New York Flyer Francine Alfandary admires those muscles on the legs of Mary Rosado ...

POST-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 71:  Number # 1 fan of the day was Jackie Cortes' son Matthew, brimming with enthusiasm.
  • Photo 72:  After finishing a tough run on a very hot day, Kim Mannen gets the perfect antidote --- a popsicle.
  • Photo 73:  And even a non-racing guy --- Fasil Yilma --- is feeling the effects of the heat.
  • Photo 74:  It is bad enough to run in the heat, and it gets worse when there is a camera to capture the after-effects.  Here Margaret Angell recoils in mock horror as her parents and Margaret Schotte laugh.  We regret that we are not able to report the interesting conversation between mother and daughter immediately afterwards.
  • Photo 75:  This is Yves-Marc Courtines (who ran all over the place) and Alyse Daberko, who said that she has done her first and last ever 10K.
  • Photo 76:  There were two digital cameras in use today.  Apart from the Mighty Zoom camera (which can pick up people from a great distance), there was the Stealth camera, which can take pictures without the cameraman looking at or even facing the subject.  This time, the victims are Fasil Yilma and Bola Awofeso.
  • Photo 77:  Just because you are not racing does not mean you are having an easy time.  Stacy Creamer was all over the course on her bike today.  Although this is her favorite race, a heel bruise prevented her from running today.
  • Photo 78:  Watch out for this picture of Sandra Scibelli!  You'll be knocked out.  We are volunteering our publicity services (what publicity services?) for her modeling career.
