Brooklyn Half Marathon

Margaret Angell

HILL DRIVE (10.2 MILES)

  • Photo 01: Toby Tanser was in third place at this point.  The good news is that the one and only big hill is coming up.

  • Photo 02: Alan Ruben was actually buried in a large pack of about ten people.  That group would be broken apart quickly by that hill.

  • Photo 03: Stuart Calderwood gives the faintest hint of a smile to acknowledge the cheering teammates at this point.

  • Photo 04: Peter Allen had no time for pleasantries as there is someone right on his heel.

  • Photo 05: Paul Stuart-Smith takes a peek to his left, where the finish line is.  Unfortunately, he would have to go all the way around the park first.

TERRACE BRIDGE (13 MILES, RAINING)

  • Photo 21: Toby Tanser should take lessons in cutting corners ... tsk, tsk, tsk ...

  • Photo 22: Alan Ruben actually broke the large pack that he was with, perhaps because this cold rain suits Englishmen (and wet ducks) perfectly.

  • Photo 23: Richie Borrero flew by us the first time without us recognizing him because he was not in orange.

  • Photo 24: Stuart Calderwood is calm and relaxed at this point, especially after sneaking a peek behind him to see that no one can catch him.

  • Photo 25: Paul Stuart-Smith is another Englishman in his milieu at this moment.

  • Photo 31: Noel Comess comes to the finish with the cyclist's sprint.

  • Photo 32: Rich Hollander comes in front of a pack.

  • Photo 33: Margaret Angell led the women today with a PR of 1:26:48.  She had predicted a 1:30 for herself, but Craig Chilton said 1:25.  This is only her third half-marathon ever, and each one has been more than 3 minutes faster.  Spectator Kevin Arlyck said, "Who was that?  How come I've never seen her before?"  That's because Kevin has been away for what seems to be an eternity.

  • Photo 34: Stacy Creamer had her eyes set on Sue Szubert (MCNY) right in front of her.  Is there enough room left?

  • Photo 35: Arthur Cooke gave us a suspenseful episode because he was running on the outside and we did not know if a gap would open up for us to take the photo

  • Photo 36: After the race, Tyronne Culpepper said to Audrey Kingsley, "You've got to teach me how to use elbows.  Some guy was bumping into me when there was plenty of room on the roadway.  I must have lost my computer chip as a result."

  • Photo 37: When Isaya Okwiya yelled at Olivier Baillet that he was looking good, Olivier had to issue an immediate denial.

  • Photo 38: Sarah Gross said that she had a major slowdown in the middle of the race, but she looked fine here.

  • Photo 39: Julie Denney is like her triathlete friend Aubin Sullivan --- they have high-knee-drive kicks at the end of a long race.

  • Photo 40: Audrey Kingsley runs in her famous favorite white shirt, with only a pair of orange gloves to indicate her club affiliation.

POST-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 41: Toby Tanser, third overall in the race, says, "The cold rain and wind are just like in Iceland."  Well, let's bring on the erupting volcanoes to complete the scene ...

  • Photo 42: Here is a photo of Jeremy Johnson, Stéphane Bois, Eve Kaplan and Céline Perrot-Johnson.  The three people not in orange are with the Warren Street Athletic Club.  This photo serves to remind us just how important it is to know the 'right' people, because Eve got a ride to the start in the Warren Street Express (namely, Dr. Kim Griffin's 1920 vintage Rolls-Royce)  while the rest of her Central Park Track Club teammates had to schlepp to Coney Island on the D train.  Of greater significance in this picture is the cyclist in the orange jacket in the background.  That would be Kevin Arlyck, currently up to two miles of running a day.

  • Photo 44: Michele Tagliati says that we should not be taking his photo, because ...

  • Photo 45: ... we should be getting Alan Ruben and Peter Allen in as well.  We are all be looking forward to Peter's next club race, when he will be 40 years old!

  • Photo 46: And Alan Ruben reminds us to take a photo of his son Joey Ruben.  Now we had done that already.  What we really missed is a photo of Gordon Bakoulis chasing a dog ...

  • Photo 51: Joey Ruben gets a ride in his aunt's arms.

  • Photo 47: Professional nurse/midwife Julie Denney looks on in a mixture of bemusement and compassion at ...

  • Photo 48: ... Kim Mannen keeling over and depositing a shower of gatorade on the ground, while Audrey Kingsley pours water on the back of her head.

  • Photo 49: Voici les français, Eric Forestier et Olivier Baillet.  We'll leave them to figure out who sent more visitors from France to our website.

  • Photo 50: Yves-Marc Courtines says, "You can report that I had a banana this morning."

  • Photo 52: Ana Echeverri says, "I'm going to start taking lessons in tying up my shoelaces.  I had to stop twice today during the race."

  • Photo 53: Quiz: Who is holding the apple in the hand?  Yes, that's a tough one, isn't it?  The first hint is from the Book of Genesis --- who ate the apple first?  You still don't get it?  See Photo 62 below.

  • Photo 54: We actually cannot see why Carol Tyler should be smiling, since she is at the end of the long and very slow-moving line to retrieve her baggage from the bus.

  • Photo 55: Stacy Creamer has finally proved that she can conquer the longer distances as well, with a PR by 4:06.

  • Photo 56: Craig Chilton has those orange gloves, the fashion fad initiated by Colin Frew.

  • Photo 57: Here is the radiant smile of Julie Denney.  This photo was taken because someone was goading from behind, "Take her picture!  Take her picture!"

  • Photo 58: Who was doing the goading?  Ross Galitsky, of course.  This would be the only picture of him today.  We will leave it to the conspiracy theorists to figure out why our camera never seems to work whenever he comes into view during a race.

  • Photo 59: Eden Weiss changes in his backyard (Prospect Park).  He said, "Did you realize that I went all the way up to the Armory last Tuesday not even to run, but to be a timer?  And the place was closed for painting!"

  • Photo 60: Bola Awofeso said, "This was not as bad as the 20 mile forced march that Colin Frew dragged me through in London."

  • Photo 61: Margaret Angell looks like as if she just stepped out of the shower.  She did.  There was a cold rain shower during the race.

  • Photo 62: Actress-singer Eve Kaplan reprised the role of the son in William Tell, as scripted, directed, produced and orchestrated by Toby Tanser.  Do you remember this other fruity picture of Eve?

  • Photo 63: Mass departure scene on the D train platform --- Ross Galitsky, Rich Hollander, Ana Echeverri, Sarah Gross, Tyronne Culpepper, and Kim Mannen slapping Bola Awofeso in the face for an unknown transgression ... we all thought that we joined a running club, but instead we landed in Peyton Place.  But, as a member of another team commented, "You orange people seem to stick together and have a good time."

So we leave you with these final words of wisdom from Kim Mannen: "I don't mind running this 8am race in Brooklyn, because I know that I will be home before noon and I will get right back into bed ..."
