Fifth Avenue Mile

Kim Mannen
Kim Mannen on Running New York

OPEN MEN (5:30 - 7:00 min)

  • Photo 01Karel Matousek flies in from Prague to run this race.  He said, "I have no sense of pace right now.  I nearly died when I heard that the first quarter was covered in 78 seconds.  I practically jogged the last half mile."

OPEN WOMEN (under 7:00 min)

  • Photo 02:  Going by in a blur is Kim Mannen, before Mary Ellen Howe and Karel Matousek can even say, "Who's that?"
  • Photo 03:  Post-race photo of our entrants in this race --- Janice Brown, Kim Mannen and Lauren Eckhart.
  • Photo 04Kim Mannen is interviewed at the finish area.  She is asked with the leading question, "Is this a flat course?"  Not exactly ...
  • Photo 05:  What is the subject of the interview now?  "Kim, who designed your outfit?"  We want to know the answer too.
  • Photo 06:  Unfortunately, Kim Mannen was not asked about how she ran on wings today.  When you see this picture, you are no doubt concerned about the permanent branding.  Don't worry, because it will be gone in three weeks.  (Technical note:  This paragraph was deliberately cryptic to force you to click for the photo, as if you don't know  our intention ...)

OPEN MEN (under 5:30 min/mile)

  • Photo 07:  At the 1500m, Isaya Okwiya was in fourth place, seemingly distanced by the two runners in front of him.  But he would storm back ahead of those two.  John Scherrer was also close behind in this photo.
  • Photo 08Jeff Kisseloff and Yves-Marc Coutrines
  • Photo 09:  What is wrong with Yves-Marc Courtines is in this picture?  Getting rid of those baggy shorts and heavy shoes would have given him another five seconds?
  • Photo 10:  What was Isaya Okwiya's analysis of the race: "When we reached the top of the hill at 72nd Street, all the guys started to push because they could see the finish line.  Unfortunately for them, there was still another half mile to go."

MASTERS WOMEN

  • Photo 11Sue Krogstad-Hill said, "Time goes by so slow in this race."
  • Photo 12Mary Rosado ran in spite of an injury.
  • Photo 13:  Although this profile shot of Mary Rosado represents a technical accomplishment, it is bad for her because you can't read the PowerBar logo.

MASTERS MEN

  • Photo 14Tom Hartshorne said, "Over the years, my time at this race has been progressively slower.  I have gone from 4:25 to 4:45, and the slowdown was pretty steady.  However, the good news is that my 800m time is still 2:06."
  • Photo 15:  We promised Herbie Medina on Thursday night that his photo will appear here.

GEORGE SHEEHAN MEMORIAL MILE (MASTERS 60-69)

  • Photo 16Sid Howard and a competitor comes down shoulder to shoulder with 100m left to go.
  • Photo 17:  Second-place finisher Sid Howard is being interviewed on television.  Sid gave effusive praise to the winner.  If only some of our Olympic also-rans (and even winners) could learn to act as graciously!
  • Photo 20Jim Aneshansley gives his post-mortem analysis.
  • Photo 21Carol Tyler lacked speed training this year due to an injury.
  • Photo 22Carol Tyler took third place on the podium.

INVITATIONAL WOMEN

  • Photo 23John Sargent and Raphael Devalle look longingly up the street for Devon Sargent.
  • Photo 24Devon Sargent ran despite back problems this week.  Making the best light of a bad situation, she said, "Since I couldn't run this week because of my back, that guaranteed that my legs are fresh."
  • Photo 26Devon Sargent

INVITATIONAL MEN

  • Photo 25:  Graduate student Jonathan Pillow gives a lesson on how to cram for a sub-4:20 mile in a short timespan.

SPECTATOR GALLERY

  • Photo 31Sue Krogstad-Hill informs Bob Wynn that she has a photo of the two of them back in 1980.  How about a photo of them in 2000 with very different Fifth Avenue Mile t-shirts?
  • Photo 32:  The running doctor Toby Tanser sets up shop on top of a newspaper vending machine to dispense advice to Jim Olson, who has been out with a stress fracture.
  • Photo 33Jerome O'Shaughnessy shows up what fashion should really look.
  • Photo 34:  Our teammate Craig ("The Body") Plummer offers a weight-training program.  However, he does not recommend lifting Toby Tanser as a routine exercise.  Toby could not agree more.
  • Photo 35:  Why is Audrey Kingsley smiling to herself?  This could be the first year ever that she did not run twenty miles before coming to watch this race.
  • Photo 36:  In this town, NYPD rules.  Yes, but look what they have just proclaimed!
  • Photo 37:  Impromptu middle-distance runners' committee meeting with Isaya Okwiya and Devon Sargent.
  • Photo 38:  Why are there two separate meetings?  Mindy Solkin, John Sargent, Raphael Devalle, J.R. Mojica and Isaya Okwiya are standing by the curbside, while Audrey Kingsley and Devon Sargent are standing underneath a canopy.  It's drizzling!  And our MBA and Attorney know what is good for them, while the Running Coach, the Doctor, the Architect, the Video Cameraman and the Psychiatrist (disclaimer: "I'm just a medical student!") are not smart enough to know that.
