PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES
-
Photo
01: Paul Stuart-Smith said that he did
not expect to do well today since he has not been able to sleep
much with the arrival of his new daughter. Indeed, we
can imagine the number of hours that he must have spent in coming
up with a name like Louisa Jasmine Anastasia Stuart-Smith!
-
Photo
02: Audrey Kingsley tells Yves-Marc
Courtines that she will not be able to wear her orange singlet.
Technical note: We are not permitted to discuss the details
(under pain of death!).
-
Photo
03: In response to Audrey Kingsley's question,
"Where have you been?", Gordon Streeter said
"I've been working hard, I run 20 miles a week and I've
been to a workout for a long time. So don't expect anything
great from me today." Audrey might have said the
same thing too.
-
Photo
04: Richie Borrero shows us the new Fila
uniform. He couldn't wait for the team order and went
out to find his own.
-
Photo
05: Peter Allen says, "I think I'll
just stay cool in the shade."
-
Photo
06: Ahem, folks, it's against the law to topple
trees in Central Park! For identification purposes, the
two lumberjacks are Margaret Angell and Michele Tagliati.
-
Photo
07: Hmm, we wonder what is so interesting behind
this tree ... ? P.S. Actually, we have some follow-up
photos for this scene. How much will the principal pay
for us not to publish them? Going, going ...
-
Photo
08: Joey and Sammy Ruben get a treat
today --- the morning at the races followed by the Bronx Zoo
later.
COMMUNITY 2 MILE RUN
-
Photo
21: Monica Bonamego ran the community fun
run on an out-and-back course.
-
Photo
22: Monica Bonamego was the second overall
female in this race. Then she jumped in to run the five
mile race next, being one of quite a few people who did the
double.
WEST 91st STREET (1 MILE)
-
Photo
31: Peter Allen must know that he is having
a good race today.
-
Photo
32: Alan Ruben looks at Peter Allen
in front of him. The Ruben fellow is famous for running
a controlled start before accelerating.
-
Photo
33: Audrey Kingsley escorted by medical
technician Blair Boyer. To prepare herself for
the heat, she has been training in Alaska, where the sole US
Olympic Marathon runner Christine Clark hails from.
Technical note: Audrey would have worn her orange singlet
but for reasons that we are not permitted to discuss.
-
MISSING AUDIO: Sidney
Brito flashing by a bike with the comment, "I see how
you get those wonderful pictures. You always stand at
the top of the hill looking down."
EAST 96th STREET (4.8 MILES)
-
Photo
41: Coming through in third place so far is Toby
Tanser. Unfortunately, he is being stalked by
Trevor Murrary right behind him.
-
Photo
42: Peter Allen and Alan Ruben are
both focussing on another Masters runner just in front of them.
-
Photo
43: Richie Borrero's new Fila uniform brought
him good luck when he won a raffle prize of a $20 gift certificate
from Tower Records.
-
Photo
44: Yvonne Callan-Brito (of The Gotham
Girls team) is rewarded with a picture on our website today,
for having noticed that one of our food critics' reviews included
her husband Sidney Brito.
-
Photo
45: Rick Shaver leads a train of people
behind him.
-
Photo
46: Michele Tagliati leads Sid Howard
to the finish. Our finish line spotter said that Sid has
the most beautiful finishing form.
-
Photo
47: Margaret Angell was probably feeling
a bit down on this hot day. But having Audrey Kingsley
come up to her motivated her to put in a fine finishing burst.
-
Photo
54: Peter Hemsher races while listening
to a walkman (or listens to a walkman while he races).
-
Photo
55: Finally, after three unsuccessful tries, we got
a photo of Shula Sarner in a race. It goes without
say that this is just the first of what will be undoubtedly
many, many more.
-
Photo
56: Did you notice the empty space around Kim
Mannen? Why? Explanation # 1: everybody
knows of her reputation as a wild elbow-swinger and so they
gave her all the room she wants. Explanation # 2:
she has sprinter's speed at the end of the race to outrun everybody.
-
Photo
57: Brian Barry runs with eyes closed.
Not interested in the beautiful scenery of Central Park, hey?
-
MISSING PHOTO: After
crossing the finish line, someone broke out to sing, "I'm
standing on my feet ..." Gee, that was a big change
from the previous race ...
POST-RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
61: Today, the course was
patrolled by two cycling members (Stacy Creamer and Stuart
Calderwood) of the Lance Armstrong Foundation who 'live
to ride.'
- Photo
62: Robbie and Matty Allen with their
dad Peter Allen.
- Photo
63: Peter Allen had a great race today in
his first appearance as a Master runner for the team. He
snatched first place Master in the last 10 yards of the race.
He even beat out Alan Ruben, who said that the last time
that occurred in a team race must have been in the primordial
days. By the way, it was Peter Allen who introduced
Alan Ruben to the Central Park Track Club back then.
- Photo
64: Our new member Shelley Farmer is talking
to Mary Wittenberg of the New York Road Runners Club,
who is always talking to everyone before, during and after the
races.
- Photo
65: Sid Howard says to Fritz Mueller,
"Fritz, you know we could have a really good 60+ team with
you, Jim Olson, Guenter Erich, Jim Aneshansley,
Max Schindler and George Hirsch."
- Photo
66: Jerome O'Shaughnessy
- Photo
67: When Shelley Farmer realized that someone
is taking pictures of her, she asked "I hope you didn't catch
me picking my nose or some such." What does she think
we are? We would only show people in the best light ...
(technical note: suspension of disbelief is required here).
- Photo
68: Sidney Brito between Audrey Kingsley
and Yvonne Callan-Brito.
- Photo
69: Something interesting must be happening here,
as Margaret Angell and Sid Howard look on, but we
can't tell you what it is. You gotta be there ...
- Photo
70: Our female leader of the day is Margaret
Schotte, the pride of Canada. The H stands for Harvard
University, and not for that other team.
AWARDS CEREMONY
- Photo
71: Julia Casals shows us her raffle prize.
- Photo
72: But Julia, you have got to show us the back
cover of the book. Yes, this will be just perfect for your
coffee table.
- Photo
73: Here is another raffle winner. Since he
is with another team, we cannot mention his name. However,
we are more than willing to tell you that the copy of Lance
Armstrong's book was donated by E. Stacy Creamer (the
"E" reportedly stands for Editor).
- Photo
74: But our biggest winner of the day was Isabella
Tagliati, who finished second overall in her race. Here,
our number one seeded runner proudly shows everyone her medal.
- Photo
75: Different people have different priorities.
For Julia Casals and Toby Tanser, bagels are more
important than hardware.
COFFEE EXCURSION
- Photo
81: After the race, a group went for coffee on the
East Side. As is our practice, most of these photos were
taken in underhanded fashion without the subjects being aware.
This one has our two cyclists Stacy Creamer (aka Ms. Latte)
and (partially) Stuart Calderwood.
- Photo
82: On one side, we have Julia Casals and
Blair Boyer.
- Photo
83: On the other side, we have Peter Krebs
(NYRRC webmaster) and Toby Tanser.
- Photo
84: This is a photo of the table top. The
hand belongs to Sylvie Kimché.
- Photo
85: Other than coffee, there is also food.
This is a photo of Kim Mannen's tuna sandwich. After
wolfing it down, she said, "I'm starving. What else
do they here? What can I buy for ten dollars?"
Seeing the astonished looks, she said, "You have no idea
how much I can eat." Now we know ...
- Photo
86: And Julia Casals shows us a photo of
what is possibly the remnants of her chicken meal.
