Monday Night at the Movies

Our first social outing of the year was set for Monday, June 12th, 2000 at the HBO Bryant Park Film Festival where a free screening of the movie Grease was scheduled.  This was obviously a great opportunity for our people to get together in an environment where we can get to know each other better beyond trading elbows on a tartan track, while enjoying the unforgettable performances from that intellectual giant John Travolta and that multi-nuanced actress Olivia Newton-John.  These photos were taken to preserve our memories of this momentous occasion, for us to cherish in the many years to come.

  • Photo 01:  This movie was supposed to be screened in the open air after sundown, with the audience seated on the lovely lawn in Bryant Park (corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue).  When is sundown?  It is difficult to gauge by eye when the sun had been concealed by those heavy rain clouds all day.  So we got there conservatively at 7:05pm.  This is the view from the back of the lawn towards the screen in the west.
  • Photo 02:  This is the reverse view from the front of the screen across the lawn towards the New York Public Library in the east.  Hmmm ... there is something strange about this scene ... how come there is not a single person in sight?
  • Photo 03:  According to the detailed instructions from our Social Director Julia Casals, the Central Park Track Club contingent shall be stationed to the right of the screen about the middle of the lawn.  There shall also be some large piece of orange-colored signage to indicate the presence of our group.  So we stood and looked down the right-hand-side aisle.  Hey, there is not a soul to be found!  Where is our team?  Where are our Social Director and her famous assistant?
  • Photo 04:  Just to make sure that it was not because of our failing eyesight, we walked down the right aisle, and we looked closely at the spot where we ought to be meeting.  There REALLY isn't anybody there!
  • Photo 05:  Okay, so we walked up to the big white movie screen and we peered to read the big red sign, "Tonight's Movie Cancelled.  Rescheduled for Tomorrow."   Tomorrow night?  It's Tuesday night, it's our track workout!  We will never give up our track workout for any movie, social or otherwise.  Besides, after the workout, we will have to cram in some extra softball practice to prepare for our match with the New York Harriers.  Here is softball lesson #1 for our cricket players: "An lbw in softball is actually an automatic pass to first base, instead of being an out.  But you will have to make a personal decision as to how important your own physical well-being is relative to your team.  P.S.  Please bear in mind that you are not allowed to wear leg padding in softball.  Howzzzzat!?"

Your question must be: "How can so much be said about so little?"  Answer:  Small minds can sometimes think big!
