PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES
-
Photo
01: First things first. We have to make
sure that we get a photo of Mary Rosado so that she can
get Powerbar points.
-
Photo
02: Audrey Kingsley is a cooperating subject,
and a model for the other people in the background --- Eve
Kaplan, Julia Casals and Sarah Gross.
-
Photo
03: Blair Boyer wonders where everybody
is. He can't find them because they're all out of uniform,
including Blair himself (well, almost everyone ...).
-
Photo
04: To look for your teammates, always check the
front first. Yes, as usual, we found Toby Tanser
and Paul Stuart-Smith.
-
Photo
05: Here is the view of those two Brits from behind
the Marine Corps color guard during the (pre-recorded) singing
of the national anthem, on the occasion of the day to commemorate
America's Independence (from the Brits!).
-
Photo
06: Here is our unabashed grovelling for some
future commercial support from Tommy Hilfiger and Macy's.
The only problem is that our two teammates look quite humorless.
This is no way to sell ...
-
Photo
07: Surprise, but those two blokes can actually
smile. So it becomes an interesting technical problem
about how we can cut and past this photo to the previous one.
But wait a minute, this one has got an utterly humorless Isaya
Okwiya between them, so we'll have to cut him out ...
-
Photo
08: Shula Sarner says, "Watch me!
I can run with my eyes closed!" Oh, by the way, she's
a Brit too.
EAST 93rd STREET (3.6 MILES)
-
Photo
11: The race leader at this point is none other
than Toby Tanser. As he came to this point, someone
said to him, "Five seconds. You've got five seconds
on the next guy." Of course, coming from this notoriously
unreliable source, Toby may just be dubious because this could
just an act of sadistic torture. But we will show you
the long shot.
Was it really a five second gap? In any case, Toby paid
heed and finished 13 seconds ahead.
-
Photo
13: Paul Stuart-Smith is just ahead of
a tight pack. With his extra-long stride, he would be
hard to catch.
-
Photo
14: Audrey Kingsley appeared to have manouveured
herself right behind another runner, but that was not good enough
to escape the photographer. Name her expression?
Resignation? Indifference?
-
Photo
15: Another contribution to the neverending Shula
Sarner race photo collection.
-
Photo
16: This is Julia Casals' "Don't do
as I do" cautionary photo. She is committing the
capital crime of looking at someone else instead of ahead to
the finish. Or is she looking for human shields because
she just saw the photographer ahead?
-
Photo
17: Now this is the right way, Julia --- head
held up high and straight and perfect form for a personal record
by 2 minutes.
-
Photo
18: Our hands must have been shaking when we took
this picture, due to sensory overload from too many multisport
athletes showing up at the same time. Julia Denney,
Ramon Bermo, Ross Galitsky, Sarah Gross.
But where is Scott Willett hiding?
POST-RACE ACTIVITIES
-
Photo
21: Audrey Kingsley proudly displays the
first-place finisher's plaque. Please note that her index
finger is strategically placed over the non-existent "WO"
in front of the words "MEN'S DIVISION 1st PLACE."
-
Photo
22: Julie Denney has already done the swim
thing before the run thing. When asked whether she had
bricks in that big backpack for additional weight, she said,
"It might as well be." Oh, for your information,
she's got her wet suit in there.
-
Photo
23: Scott Willett says, "I don't even
worry about being photographed anymore. Like everything
else on the website, it's all untrue." Golly, and
we thought photographs don't lie? P.S. We forgot
to thank him for sending the Cole Gym Swimming Pool at NYU into
our list of top ten users.
-
Photo
24: These are Scott Willett's new Nike
running shoes-slippers. He recommends them highly, saying
that they give him the quickest transition from the door of
his apartment to the sofa. This may be the last time that
you will see them in white, because Scott hates white and he
will be painting them black following the advice of the Rolling
Stones.
-
Photo
25: Josh Friedman says, "This is only
my third running race ever. My first three miles were
5:45, 6:18 and 6:50. I don't think this is the way to
do it. I've got to learn to pace myself better."
Josh is a perennial procrastinator who has not yet turned in
a team application, but he is a frequent website visitor (see
the entries from Yeshiva University (yu.edu) in our log reports).
Let's see if this note will do the trick to get him to put some
cash into the club coffers ...
-
Photo
26: Sylvie Kimché shows us the guest pass that
she is going to relinquish to some undeserving person because
she has to leave early today.
KIDDIES' RACE
-
Photo
31: Casey Yamazaki says, "Please don't
take a picture of me, but make sure you take a picture of the
rest of the family." So here are Yumi Ogita
and daughter Erika Maple Ogita-Yamazaki.
-
Photo
32: Close-up of Erika. Don't these kids
just love the excitement of these races?
-
Photo
33: This is Rupert Stuart-Smith.
His dad was scouting out the competition; specifically, "Is
that Ruben boy going to be here?" To his disappointment
(relief?), the answer was no.
-
Photo
34: Not ready to run yet is Rupert's little sister,
Louisa Jasmine Anastasia. It will be ... oh, say
... one year and 11 months before she is eligible for the race
for two-year-olds.
-
Photo
35: At the starting line, in the grand Stuart-Smith
tradition, Paul and Rupert are at the very front.
-
Photo
36: Nearing the finish line are Paul and Rupert.
Paul's post-race analysis: "We've got to work on the start."
Yeah, but please don't go out too fast!
