The Central Park Track Club holds workouts twice
a week around the year. During the summer months, we hold
outdoor workouts at the East River Park track located at East 6th
Street right by East River. This set of photos was taken on
June 21st, 2000 and shows a typical set of activities.

16: East River Park contains not only a tartan track for
running, but it is apparently also the site for rodeos.
Here vaquero Raphael Devalle demonstrates his riding
form.

17: Before the workout begins, all we see is a couple
of serious-looking (or bored-looking?) people like David Birchfield
and Alex Peterhansl waiting for things to move along.
Meanwhile, some other people are very busy dodging our photographer
...

18: This is also the time for transacting business,
as our club president John Kenney goes over the team uniform
issues with Toby Tanser.
- Photo
19: The workout is also the time when the coach
goes over the race results from the previous weekend. Here,
Shula Sarner looks a bit embarrassed by the effusive praise
poured upon her for leading our Open Women's team to a first-
place finish in the Fight Against Prostate Cancer 5K in
the park.
- Photo
20: What is Kyra Weiss thinking? "When
I grow up, I want to be just like Shula Sarner ... ?"
- Photo
21: As a reminder, these workouts are made infinitely
smoother by our volunteer timers. On this day, the timer
was Craig Chilton, who is a timer as well as cheerleader.
- Photo
22: While the general idea is to follow the pacing
instructions, there is a tendency for people to get progressively
faster, especially on the final set. On this very last of
eight 600m's, Shula Sarner could no longer hold back.
- Photo
23: Running is about going one point to another
point in the quickest possible time (or, ideally, in the case
of a workout, in a pre-determined time), and the timer is present
precisely to give you the time. In this photo of Alex
Peterhansl, Kiet Vo, Sid Howard, David Birchfield, Margaret Schotte,
Mark Gumbiner, Devon Sargent and Margaret Angell, at
least half of them are marching to their own watch.
- Photo
24: Getting a fast time means getting a quick start.
In this photo, we see Peter Hemsher, Brian Barry, Blair Boyer,
Jackie Cortes, Mary Rosado and J.R. Mojica starting
off with a steep forward body lean to build up their momentum.
Again, three of these six have reached for their own watches.
- Photo
25: One of the tenets of pack running is shared
leading, as people alternate to take the lead between sets.
Here, this group is led by Jackie Cortes and J.R. Mojica.
- Photo
26: This other group is led by Margaret Angell,
Margaret Schotte and Kiet Vo, reined in by Sid
Howard.
- Photo
27: In the sprinters' group, the thundering leaders were
Eric Harvey and Craig Plummer. People like
that should make you extra-alert on the track because you don't
want to be run over by those two freight trains.

28: These outdoor track workouts take place between
April and October. Conditions, both in terms of weather
and light, vary by the time of year. Now the longest day
of the year occurs around this particular day, but still the sun
is no longer high up by this time of the evening. This led
someone to ask, "What is this dark glasses thing with Toby
Tanser and Isaya Okwiya?" Could it be that
it is a lot brighter up there when you are so tall ... ?
- Photo
29: In between the sets of fast sprinter are the
recovery jogs. But, as Sid Howard reminds us all
the time, "Keep the jog ALIVE!" After all, we
are not the Central Park Walking Club.
- Photo
30: We love to see young people being introduced
to this sport. Here, though, Eden Weiss is not explaining
the workout (see the poster behind them) to his daughter Kyra
Weiss, but pointing to ... what? NOT the dumpster!?
