10K RACE START
-
Photo
01: Alan Ruben warns Erik Goetze, Paul
Stuart-Smith and Toby Tanser, "I think that
there is a camera pointing at us."
-
Photo
02: Theo Spilka, Alan Ruben and Paul
Stuart-Smith, with an interloper in between.
-
Photo
03: Sarah Gross can't be that terrified of the
camera?
-
Photo
04: Paul Stuart-Smith says, "Watch me carefully
today, because I am going to win a bunch of awards. In
fact, I am aiming to sweep the combined under-40-year-old category
in the two-mile race."
-
Photo
05: Toby Tanser wears an
Icelandair singlet today. That would have an important
bearing on his bearing later.
-
Photo
06: The workout description for the Thursday workout
included this paragraph: "The big race this week is the
L'Oréal Twosome, hitherto and forever after known as
the Trevira Twosome. Question: Will Alan
Ruben be running the race with Gordon Bakoulis (see
1998 race)? If
so, will Nathan Klejman be able to take care of both
Joey and Sammy? Stay tuned for the next episode ..."
Indeed, Alan Ruben did not disappoint us.
-
Photo
07: David Blackstone came down today with
his wife Lynn (where is she?).
-
Photo
08: Theo Spilka out for a run on a beautiful
spring morning.
-
Photo
09: "Paging Audrey Kingsley ... paging
Audrey Kingsley ... your partner is looking for you ..."
Everyone on the Audrey watch should note that she is wearing
new Asics running shoes with the laces intact. Let it
be duly noted that Asics has received more (unpaid) publicity
from our Audrey Kingsley than any of their elite athletes.
This endorsement should come in handy when she negotiates a
contract with Asics. P.S. The orange jacket in the
far background belongs to the Central Park Track Club
video guy J.R. Mojica.
-
Photo
11: Finally, Audrey Kingsley locates her
partner Erik Goetze.
-
Photo
10: Ramon Bermo says, "I'm a triathlete
these days. I only run to keep my NYU runners company."
10K RACE: 5.2 MILE MARK
-
Photo
21: Toby Tanser is ahead by a couple of
minutes. Here he is simulating an Icelandair flight.
Or else he could be collecting data for Tivon Jacobson
to work on his theory of airfoil stability. After Toby
passed, we had a dilemma. Should we cut across Sheep Meadow
south and catch the finish, or do we wait for our other runners?
Since Toby was not likely to lose this race even if he stopped
for a bagel or two, we stayed put.
-
Photo
22: After New York Flyer Todd Baldini
passed (hey, you didn't think we would show a photo of him,
did you?), the next one to come was Alan Ruben, less
than two weeks after the Boston Marathon.
-
Photo
23: And right afterwards came Erik Goetze.
-
Photo
24: And right afterwards came Paul Stuart-Smith.
The shadows on the ground to the right belong to Betty Marolla,
Frank Schneiger and Kai Michaelsen, who actually
needed to be debriefed about the names of the 'new' guys ("Who
is this Toby person?") but they were really impressed with
the long string of orange singlets among the leaders.
10K RACE: 6.1 MILE MARK
-
Photo
31: By the time we got back to the west side,
Toby Tanser had long landed his airflight. But
we caught Alan Ruben coming in third place overall.
-
Photo
32: Erik Goetze was in fourth place overall.
-
Photo
33: Paul Stuart-Smith was in fifth place
overall.
-
Photo
34: And if we add Suso Montero's strong
twelfth place overall finish, we would have had a strong men's
team. Unfortunately, there is no club team scoring in
this race.
-
Photo
35: Tyronne Culpepper received the green
light to sprint to the finish, as Bola Awofeso looks
on.
-
Photo
36: Theo Spilka later said, "I was
so glad to have people cheering for me out there."
So this thank-you note goes to everyone who were yelling until
their voices turned hoarse.
-
Photo
37: Someone said, "Audrey Kingsley
never wears orange anymore." Well, we'll have to
compensate somehow.
-
Photo
38: Roger Liberman came for a race in the
park and a stroll with the family afterwards.
-
Photo
39: Here is the loudest cheering squad of the
day: Stuart Calderwood, Stacy Creamer and Bola
Awofeso. The guy on the bike has an advantage over
the others as he can cut across the park a lot faster.
He was generous to say to our web photographer, "Wanna
hitch a ride?"
-
Photo
40: No one is permitted to leave before Sarah
Gross arrives.
-
Photo
41: Being running coach means that Ramon Bermo
has to teach endurance to run 10K's and also sprinting at the
finish.
-
Photo
42: David Blackstone finishes.
-
Photo
43: Not everyone present ran the race. Here
is a cool-looking Richie Borrero in civilian clothes.
-
Photo
44: Here is what passes for humor to the Brits
--- Alan Ruben's London Marathon t-shirt reads "Been
there, Run (sic) It, Got the T-Shirt." We
are not amused.
10K AWARDS CEREMONY
-
Photo
45: Audrey Kingsley was surprised to find
that her team was in first place for their age group.
She said, "It was all due to my partner (Erik Goetze)."
Methinks that she underestimates her own contribution.
-
Photo
46: Toby Tanser picks up his overall individual
finisher's prizes. On the whole, he might have just settled
for another bagel instead (that is, on top of the seven that
he had already eaten).
-
Photo
47: Alan Ruben has a busy day ahead.
First, he picks up the overall individual finisher's award for
his wife Gordon Bakoulis.
-
Photo
48: Then Alan picks up the overall first couple's
prizes.
-
Photo
49: This is the total loot after adding the first-place
age-group couple's award. Five trophies, five copies of
the same Self magazine, five t-shirts, ... Alan
has a real problem now because his backpack was not large enough
to hold everything.
-
Photo
50: Finally, after giving away some magazines
and declining some trophies, Alan stuffed everything into his
backpack. He resets his stopwatch and asks, "Does
anyone want to run back uptown with me?" Notice how
the crowd standing around him has suddenly vanished as soon
as he spoke those simple words. Rather than doing the
death march with Alan, they preferred to follow the Social Director
and walk (slowly) to Starbucks.
2 MILE RACE START
-
Photo
51: Frank Handelman showed up this morning
after running in the Penn Relays last night. Is
that why he defers to Isaya Okwiya and his fresh legs?
-
Photo
52: Another just-in-time arrival from Stacy
Creamer and Stuart Calderwood.
-
Photo
53: A photo of Stacy Creamer like this
one is enough to give our web photographer delusions of being
another Luca Trovato. So does this website have
the best running photos or what? (Okay, even if your answer
is no, then does this website have the most number of running
photos at 3,200+ or what?)
-
Photo
54: Isaya Okwiya, Stuart Calderwood
and Frank Handelman set their watches and get ready.
Even the traffic light is moving to yellow.
2 MILE FINISH
-
Photo
61: The course was a simple 1-1/4 lower loop,
and Stuart Calderwood came around quickly.
-
Photo
62: Right behind came Isaya Okwiya, who
said, "I was sucking air big time."
-
Photo
63: Frank Handelman keeps one step ahead
of the female winner of the race.
-
Photo
64: Stacy Creamer in her final push, good
enough to snatch third place right at the finish line.
2 MILE AWARDS CEREMONY
-
Photo
71: Jennifer Stockbridge points to Paul
Stuart-Smith, the 'winner' of the second-place under-40-year-old
couple team.
-
Photo
72: Oh, not so fast --- Paul Stuart-Smith
is also the 'winner' of the first-place under-40-year-old couple
team. You see, Paul is a coach with New York Running
Partners and his kids are the real winners today.
-
Photo
73: Stacy Creamer and Stuart Calderwood
are the first combined 80-99 year-old-team. They finished
second overall, just behind a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old
girl, young enough to be their children.
TOBY'S QUIZ PRIZE CEREMONY
-
Photo
81: On the side, Toby Tanser presents a
box of orange PR bars to Ramon Bermo for solving his
latest quiz.
-
Photo
82: What does our winner think? Ramon said,
"Hmmm ... in the future, just make sure you keep your quizzes
on European topics. I can handle that." Shall
we take it that this means Ramon has not yet found out what
the combination on Henry Rono's briefcase in 1978-1981
was?
