Winter Biathlon

Stuart Calderwood

PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 01: Randy Ehrlich practices his game face --- "How would you like to meet me in a dark alley?"

  • Photo 02: Stacy Creamer and Stuart Calderwood get their gear ready in the bike transition area.  Although this race was named the Winter Biathlon, it was distinctly spring-like today.

  • Photo 03: The two sides of the purple gang --- Julie Denney with the white NYU tri club top and Scott Willett with the purple NYU tri club top.

  • Photo 04: Aubin Sullivan and Thomas Pennell actually did the 6am bicycle race in the park.  This is the back of the Thomas' Team Union Square Cafe uniform, a sight that was seen by all the other cyclists in his first cycling race (and also his first win) a couple of weeks ago.

LEG 1: 2.2 MILE RUN

  • Photo 11: Stuart Calderwood receives the blessing from the King of Poland.

  • Photo 12: Randy Ehrlich also runs in the shadow of the King of Poland.

  • Photo 13: It is dangerous out there when people jostle to cut in front of Central Park Track Club people like Stacy Creamer because they want to be in the pictures.

  • Photo 14: Jane Harris runs with her bike helmet on --- is running really that dangerous?

  • Photo 15: At the end of the first run, Stuart Calderwood was in fourth place.

LEG 2: 12 MILE BIKE RIDE

  • Photo 21: This might have been Noel Comess' transport inside Central Park, but he was actually out of town today.

  • Photo 22: Squinting into the sun, Stacy Creamer violates Tony Ruiz's first rule of good racing form --- Thou Shalt Not Reach For Thy Stopwatch.

  • Photo 23: At the start of the second loop, Stuart Calderwood gets out of the saddle to tackle Cat Hill.

  • Photo 24: At the start of the second loop, Stacy Creamer squints at Cat Hill.

  • Photo 25: Our web photographer confessed to be totally bewildered by the cycling leg.  He had stationed himself halfway up Cat Hill where the cyclists are expected to be moving at the slowest speed, but they still zoomed right by him before he can recognize the persons under the helmets.  Therefore, the only photos were those of the two people in orange singlets.  Otherwise, there are just some butt shots like this one of Scott Willett.

LEG 3: 2.2 MILE RUN

  • Photo 31: Running through the Great Lawn path is Randy Ehrlich.

  • Photo 32: Running in front of the picture-pretty Belvedere Castle is Stuart Calderwood, just in front of Scott Willett.

  • Photo 33: The single most cooperative photo subject is Ross Galitsky, who stopped for this special pose, losing precious seconds in his race.

  • Photo 34: Julie Denney crosses in front of the Belvedere Castle.

  • Photo 36: Stacy Creamer coming into the Great Lawn.

  • Photo 35: Stacy Creamer crosses in front of the Belvedere Castle.  See that fence?  The park ranger says that anyone who crosses the fence will be issued a $150 summons.

POST-RACE ACTIVITIES

  • Photo 41: How do you spell happiness?  According to Jane Harris and David Monti, it is spelled H.A.R.D.W.A.R.E.!  They were careful to point out that our other couples (Stuart Calderwood & Stacy Creamer, Scott Willett & Julie Denney) collected superior hardware.  But from this distance, all hardware look the same.
