Women's Sports & Fitness Half Marathon/5K

Sandra Scibelli

HALF MARATHON START

  • Photo 01:  We asked Terri Sonenclar if there was any substance to her winning a race a couple of weeks ago.  She said, "Yes, I won the Bronx Run for the River 10K, and actually one other race this year."  These races are obviously her trade secret as they are not listed anywhere.

  • Photo 02:  The speeches were made, the start horn goes off and one Central Park Track Club runner was found sprinting off across the cutoff westbound.  Hey, doesn't the race head south?  Is she cutting the course ... ?

WEST 72nd STREET, 1.2 MILES

  • Photo 03:  Before the lead car reached here, we see our 'course-cutter' charging ahead with a backpack.  Our super-triathlete, super-midwife Julie Denney was paged right before the start and had to leave immediately because the baby doesn't want to wait for the race to finish.  Julie did not even find out about this race until last night, having done a century bike ride before she got home.

  • Photo 04: Yumi Ogita entered this only because registration was set up at a sports store right next to her office.

  • Photo 05: Audrey Kingsley showed up in her new hairdo, her famous white shirt plus sunglasses.

  • Photo 06: Terri Sonenclar had the reputation of being Miss Half Marathon, having done eight in one year (and would have done more if they staged more ...)

  • Photo 07Sandra Scibelli and Laura Miller running in tandem.

  • Photo 08:  A wired photo of Margaret Nolan

  • Photo 09Caryl Baron turns around to see who is taking photographs.

CLEOPATRA'S NEEDLE, 5.4 MILES

  • Photo 11Yumi Ogita, legendary for her light steps

  • Photo 12Audrey Kingsley comes by looking sheepish, saying "I'm sorry.  I almost didn't see you."  That's quite okay, as long as we see her.

  • Photo 13Terri Sonenclar is an avid bodybuilder.  Once upon a time, she was disappointed when the judges in a contest deemed that she was not tanned enough.  Were they blind?

  • Photo 14Sandra Scibelli and Laura Miller sticking together.

MARIONETTE THEATER, 7.8 MILES

  • Photo 15:  As Yumi Ogita passes this point, one teammate was heard to say, "Does anyone wear orange anymore?"

  • Photo 16:  As Audrey Kingsley comes up this hill, she is a picture of concentration.

  • Photo 17:  We would be happy if we all run looking like Terri Sonenclar

  • Photo 18Sandra Scibelli and Laura Miller still sticking together, but looking a bit stressed going up the hill, unlike runner #779 who is waving at the camera (for which she gets a free photo on this website).

COLUMBUS CIRCLE, 12.7 MILES

  • Photo 19: Yumi Ogita did not have the best of finishes, as she was grabbing her side in pain.

  • Photo 20:  Although Audrey Kingsley looks pained, she is actually in much better shape than in last year's race.  If you recall, she ended up in the medical tent then.

  • Photo 21Terri Sonenclar was our best looking finisher of the day.  But we are sure that she'll tell you otherwise if you ask her.

  • Photo 22Sandra Scibelli is the only Boston/London marathoner who raced today, as the others rested.

  • Photo 23Laura Miller looking really stressed.

  • Photo 31:  Besides seeing our photographer many times today, the racers probably also saw the cycling duo of Stacy Creamer and Stuart Calderwood loud and often.  Here they are on their umpteenth lap.

5 K RACE

  • Photo 51:  In the 5K race today, Mary Rosado and her teammates Mary Messite and Sylvie Kimché were the first place team.
