Broadway on Broadway 5K

Sammy & Joey Ruben
"Our mom won the race!"

WEST 48th STREET (3 MILES)

  • Photo 1:  The Broadway On Broadway 5K begins at 102nd Street-West Drive inside the park and ends up on Time Square.  There is a mild misrepresentation here since the course is on Seventh Avenue and not Broadway, and the finish is at 47th Street (and not 42nd Street) right in front of a McDonald's.
  • Photo 2Toby Tanser gets to run past the role of consumer electronics store on 7th Avenue.  Behind him, we see two 800m men ---  Stéphane Bois (WS) and Isaya Okwiya --- bearing down.
  • Photo 3Craig Chilton: "I had given up the idea that I would ever score for this team!  The faster I ran, the lower I ranked."  Today, Craig was the third scorer for the team.
  • Photo 4Alan Ruben said, "Oh my, I've still not recovered from that Hood To Coast Relay.  That one was as tough as a full marathon."
  • Photo 5:  For Graeme Reid, the story was actually what was behind him, as we had Graeme Reid (17:42), Victor Osayi (17:44) and James Siegel (17:45).  Graeme's concern was that Graham Rasulo had been beaten by James Siegel earlier this year, and he was making sure that it would not happen again.  Meanwhile, in the last five races in a row, Victor Osayi had finished just a few seconds ahead of James Siegel, who said, "I had Victor.  I had him.  There was less than 200m to go and I was accelerating.  The finish line was coming up and there was no time left for him to react if I passed him.  Instead, someone in the crowd yelled, 'Siegel, you can still catch him!'  At those words, Victor took off like a rocket.  This is one time that I don't need cheering!'"

  • Photo 08Fred Trilli ran the weekend double (the Harlem Renaissance Classic yesterday)
  • Photo 09Sylvie Kimché ran 21:32, first W50-54, one of her fastest times in recent years (but still over three minutes slower than her PR --- keep working at it!)
  • Photo 10Isaya Okwiya set a personal record for 5K and also led the team in scoring (and in cheering)

POST-RACE

  • Photo 11James Siegel: "Don't forget that we have a team brunch at the Saloon later this morning."
  • Photo 12Etsuko Kizawa: "Brunch?  Why?  I'm happy with an apple."
  • Photo 13Margaret Angell: "No, I didn't beat James Siegel as you wished."
  • Photo 14Jonathan Federman: "Don't even ask if I am from Canada because of my singlet!"
  • Photo 15Adam Newman: "At least I got my picture taken."
  • Photo 16Stacy Creamer chats with GNY coach Bob Glover.
  • Photo 17: ... hmmm ... on the whole, we think people look better in orange color ...

BRUNCH (THE SALOON, 64th Street and Columbus Avenue)

  • Photo 21James Siegel: "I just went for an eight mile run after the race and I am dripping in sweat.  They probably won't let me in like this, so I better dry up first.  Since this is New York, I can do that right in the middle of the street."
  • Photo 22Stacy Creamer to Sammy and Joey Ruben: "Do you know who won the race this morning?  It's your mommy!"
  • Photo 23Isaya Okwiya showed up at 1230 for an 1100 brunch.  So what?  As long as he shows up on time for races ...
