2001 Chicken Soup Loop

LEG SHOW

  • Photo 01:  All was not lost on a day when the icy snow forced this race to be turned into a non-scoring fun run.  Instead this became a competition to see who is the most underdressed.  These legs belong to Craig Chilton.
  • Photo 02:  These legs belong to Jerome O'Shaughnessy, who is legendary for showing up at the Thursday evening workouts in shorts during the winter.  Jerome's philosophy is, "You dress to run for thirty degrees warmer than the actual temperature."  Even Shelley Farmer, who hails from Edmonton (Alberta), was quite impressed.
  • Photo 03Olivier Baillet shouted from the back, "Look at that Alan Ruben guy in shorts today!"
  • Photo 04:  By consensus, the winner today was Toby Tanser, who regarded this scene with dismay: "What do you mean you can't race in these conditions?  If you can see the tree in front of you, it means that you should be able to run."
  • Photo 05:  This Frenchman wearing the wrong colors said, "It took me half an hour to run the three miles to get here, so what is point of running this 'race'?  But I want you to document the fact that I did have a number and I would have raced."  P.S.  We document the fact that he was soundly beaten by our four teammates in this part of the competition.

THE WELL-PRACTICED ART OF STANDING AROUND

  • Photo 11:  A very disappointed Rob Zand said, "You should ask Alan Ruben what his chances are against me today.  It is a real shame that this is now a fun run, because I am actually in shape."
  • Photo 12Margaret Angell said, "I wrote down Audrey Kingsley's telephone number on my hand to remind me to call her about this being turned into a fun run."  P.S.  Next time you need to call her and you can't remember her number, just remember this photo.  This has been a public service from your favorite website.
  • Photo 13Cat Goodridge said, "Brrrrrrrr!  It is sooooo cold.  I have to run in place to stay warm."
  • Photo 14:  Shelley Farmer said, "It is a real shame that they turned this scoring race into a fun run.  We would have swept this race with our three Canadians (note: plus Alayne Adams and Lauren Eckhart.)"
  • Photo 15Lauren Eckhart said, "It is dangerous out here today, because you have to watch who is taking photos of you."
  • Photo 16:  Who can you blame for this mess?  Well, at the Thursday workout, the coach said, "I know some of you are concerned about the snow coming in on this weekend.  According to James Siegel, the snow will be washed away by rain before the race.  Therefore, there is no reason to worry."  And you don't have to worry about James either, even though his credentials as a weatherman have suffered tremendously, he had the foresight to hold on to his day job.

  • Photo 41:  Already forging into the lead is Toby Tanser.
  • Photo 42Alan Ruben says, "Hello, it's me.  Orange gloves and all."
  • Photo 43:  Our alpha males --- Erik Goetze, Craig Chilton, Isaya Okwiya, Rob Zand
  • Photo 44John Kenney
  • Photo 45Charlie Stark and Yumi Ogita
  • Photo 46Shelley Farmer and Lauren Eckhart --- the only thing missing is the dog sled team.  Much, Canucks, mush!

EAST 94th STREET (5.7 MILES IN THE RACE)

  • Photo 21:  Here is the first person to come through in the race, faster than even the pace car.  Maybe he does have an unfair advantage because he used special equipment?
  • Photo 22:  About half a mile ahead of the next runner is Toby Tanser, collecting his third victory in a row inside Central Park this year.  We picked him as the odds-on favorite to win as soon as we saw the snow outside our window.  Why?  Because it is much worse (you need to add total darkness and howling winds plus another foot or two of snow) than this for nine months of the year in Iceland.
  • Photo 23Alan Ruben had a top 10 finish today (and we believe that he was third finisher in shorts after Toby Tanser and Joe McVeigh).
  • Photo 24:  This full-body shot of Craig Chilton shows that even this Canadian would not wear just a singlet today.
  • Photo 25John Kenney said, "Actually, it was not a bad day to run at all.  It sure beats trying to handle another T3 line failure at the office."
  • Photo 26Graeme Reid
  • Photo 27:  This photo of Olivier Baillet should give him something to write to his porteņo friends about (plus that even more memorable (although Olivier has no memory of ever running on top of the ice over the Central Park reservoir) photo on the top of the page).
  • Photo 28Michele Tagliati gives himself some external motivation --- he had better hurry up or else the snow removal truck will remove him from the race.  By the way, this truck removed our chances of taking a photo of Alayne Adams and Charlie Stark.
  • Photo 29Shelley Farmer and Audrey Kingsley
  • Photo 30Jerome O'Shaughnessy to Cat Goodridge: "Look sharp!  I think we're being photographed."
  • Photo 31Eve Kaplan to her running companion, "Oh, by the way, I should tell you that when you run next to someone in an orange jacket, you will get photographed."
  • Photo 32Sarah Gross should have a ready-made "I wish I were in Puerto Rico" speech.
  • Photo 33Tyronne Culpepper wonders, "Maybe I would have been better off running home directly?"

FINISH LINE (photo credit: Bola Awofeso)

  • Photo 51:  First person to appear near the finish line is ... our former president Betty Marolla?  Let's hope that this cross-country skiing is just a cross-training fad.
  • Photo 52:  First person to approach the finish line is Toby Tanser with no one else in sight.  Victory is sweet, but it could have been sweeter with the $500 if the race were official.  All of a sudden, this fun run isn't so much fun ...
  • Photo 53:  This wide-angled shot of Alan Ruben also shows no one else in sight behind him (and that means Rob Zand).
  • Photo 54Erik Goetze
  • Photo 55Craig Chilton and Rob Zand
  • Photo 56John Kenney
  • Photo 57Graeme Reid says, "Watch me!  I can do this with no hands."
  • Photo 58Olivier Baillet
  • Photo 59Michele Tagliati
  • Photo 60:  This is our most perfect shot of the day --- the profile of Alayne Adams.
  • Photo 70 James Siegel in a profile shot.  He has no idea how important these profile shots are to us.
  • Photo 61Adam Riess
  • Photo 71Yumi Ogita in a wide-angled shot.  Yes, it's white everywhere today.
  • Photo 72Margaret Angell to the finish line.  Very nice black-and-blue disguise for today.
  • Photo 73:  The three musketeers: Lauren Eckhart, Shelley Farmer and Audrey Kingsley.  We would have loved to trail those three, because the amount of gossip that we could pick up today should be sufficient to carry out Famous Sayings page through the rest of the year.
  • Photo 74Jerome O'Shaughnessy to Cat Goodridge: "I know that we just saw one photographer half a mile ago, but you can never tell how many of our photographers are out there."
  • Photo 75Irene Jackson-Schon is a seasoned cross-country skier, so this is just perfect.  Question:  Where did that blue long-sheeve team shirt come from?
  • Photo 76Eve Kaplan says, "Oh, yes, I am used to this gaunlet of photographers here, there and everywhere."
  • Photo 77Frank Schneiger
  • Photo 78Tyronne Culpepper

MISSING PHOTO

  • Rich Hollander running by with a camera in his hand.  Presumably, he is interested in entering the Rob Zand photo competition too.  (Toby Tanser says, "Running with a camera ... now there is a thought for me to try out."  Well, DON'T!  We need you to win!)
