Spring Couple Relay

Stacy Creamer, Margaret Schotte

ASSEMBLY

  • Photo 11Stuart Calderwood, Stacy Creamer, Peter Allen, Margaret Schotte
  • Photo 12Jonathan Cane explains to Stacy Creamer: "Margaret and I are serious about winning this thing.  We came out here to practice rowing last weekend!"
  • Photo 13:  Photo # 13 goes to Randy Ehrlich and his friend Lisa Quig pinning on team bib number 13.  Randy is a previous winner of this race.
  • Photo 14Peter Allen prepping his equipment.
  • Photo 15Peter Allen explains to Sarah Gross that he is serious about winning this race.  Indeed, he won the 1995 edition of this race (see story at the bottom of Alan Ruben's page).  Alan Ruben was a spectator today; when asked if he missed doing this race himself, his answer was a curt "NO!"

RUNNING

  • Photo 21:  The runners are ready to go.  We are winning the bet the double on Margaret Schotte and Stacy Creamer.
  • Photo 22:  Close-up of Margaret Schotte and Stacy Creamer.
  • Photo 23Jonathan Cane can only stand back and watch
  • Photo 24Stuart Calderwood on the sideline
  • Photo 31:  One mile into the race at Daniel Webster statue --- right behind one guy are our two women, Stacy Creamer and Margaret Schotte.
  • Photo 32Sarah Gross runs next to the woman of the eventual winning couple.
  • Photo 33:  On this gorgeous morning, Coach Mindy Solkin addresses her Team In Training group at Bethesda Terrace
  • Photo 34:  Second overall and first woman Margaret Schotte, who asked after the race, "Did anyone get my split?"  Never mind, Margaret, because you just set a PR for this 2.6 mile race.
  • Photo 35:  Third overall and second woman Stacy Creamer.
  • Photo 36Sarah Gross could have done just as well in the cycling leg.

BIKING

  • Photo 47Jonathan Cane starts off, and Stuart Calderwood not far behind.  The missing audio-visual record is when Stuart caught up to Jonathan at one point and started talking trash, "Hey, Jonathan, you're not so tough after all ..."
  • Photo 48Peter Allen starts off.  The problem with the bike leg is that it is impossible to take photos.
  • Photo 49:  Race leader Jonathan Cane near the finish.

ROWING

  • Photo 50:  Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte was the first team to hit the water.
  • Photo 51:  Who's faster?  The duck? or Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte?
  • Photo 52Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte are still leading as they approach Bow Bridge.
  • Photo 53Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte emerge on the other side of Bow Bridge.  This photo is also remarkable for this is the first time in ages that you can see the Central Park Track Club photographer --- okay, so it's just the shadow of his head on the water ...
  • Photo 54:  The reason why we love this race is the gorgeous landscape.
  • Photo 55:  And here is another landscape shot for race leaders Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte.
  • Photo 56:  Pursuing from third-place is the Stuart Calderwood-Stacy Creamer team.  It was at this point of the race that they determined something was distinctly wrong --- they were rowing with the boat pointing in the opposite direction!
  • Photo 57Stuart Calderwood-Stacy Creamer makes the 180-degree turn to face the right direction.
  • Photo 58:  Coming through in fifth place is the Peter Allen-Sarah Gross team.  Every year, Peter's spring schedule consists of training for running the Boston Marathon, and then immediately switching over to intensive rowing thereafter just for this race.
  • Photo 59:  The landscape shot for Stuart Calderwood-Stacy Creamer.
  • Photo 60:  Before the race, Peter Allen debriefed Sarah Gross: "There's just one thing that I need to tell you about the rowing."  Well, one thing turned into many many things ...
  • Photo 61:  The landscape shot for Peter Allen-Sarah Gross.
  • Photo 62:  This is the turnaround point at the farthest point of the rowing leg.  Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte have just lost their lead in the race.  Panic time?  Yes, they are trying a new technique!  The double!
  • Photo 63:  After spinning around in circles, they decided to switch back to the single rower.  When asked afterwards if they would come and practice every weekend until next year's race, Margaret replied quickly, "NO!"

  • Photo 65Jonathan Cane-Margaret Schotte coming back under Bow Bridge.
  • Photo 66Stuart Calderwood-Stacy Creamer under Bow Bridge.
  • Photo 67Peter Allen-Sarah Gross under Bow Bridge
  • Photo 68Stuart Calderwood-Stacy Creamer cross under the finish line balloons in third place.
  • Photo 69Peter Allen-Sarah Gross finish in fourth place.
