True runners will travel far for the
best in the sport. In August 2001, the 8th IAAF World Championships
were held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. These photos came
from Roy Altman (Taconic
Road Runners Club).

team of Antonio Pettigrew, Angelo Taylor, Leonard
Byrd and Derrick Brew.

02: Sammy Kipketer (Kenya) leads out the
Men's 5000m race at a torrid pace as part of the pre-planned team
strategy. Since Sammy has the credentials (12:58 PR) to
maintain that pace, the rest of the pack could not afford to let
him get away altogether.

03: The women's 5000m was the most controversial
race in these championships --- did Olga Yergerova use
EPO to win?
- Photo
04: The men's 1500m was an easy win by Hicham
El
Guerrouj.
This
race was scheduled at 6pm EST, at the exact moment when ABC's
television coverage went off the air, so all you New Yorkers will
have to look at this picture and use your imagination. Well,
it looked like Hicham's teammate took it out fast and had the
rest of the field strung out, so that there was no risk of a repeat
of that famous tripping in the Olympics.

05: World Championship VIPs include: Stuart Calderwood,
Eden Weiss and Stacy Creamer. Before leaving,
Eden promised that he would showcase the Central Park Track Club
brand name in Edmonton. Oh, how we wish we could get those
new uniforms with the emblazoned centralparktc.org soon!
Was this a group excursion? Not at all. For whatever
reasons, Stuart & Stacy decided to go to this shopping mall
and ran into Eden. Small world.

06: Eden Weiss with one of the real VIPs
--- Gabriela Szabo, the 1500m champion advertised at 5'1"
tall and 92 pounds light.

Tulu (10,000m champion) and Gezahegne Abera
(marathon champion).
