PRE-RACE ACTIVITIIES (West 101st Street)
- Photo
01: Carlos Stafford said, "I'm on a
20 mile training run, which is why I am not wearing uniform."
Since we probably cannot find him during the race, we said, "Let's
get it over with and do it before the race starts."
So here he is in front of the ducks swimming in the pond.
Carlos is a professional model, and he said, "You'll have
to contact my agent about the standard stuff concerning the six-month
usage and the residuals."
- Photo
02: Pam Rasulo (UATH) says, "I think
you are confusing me with the bunch of people (including Graeme
Reid) who are foolish enough to challenge Toby Tanser in
this race."
- Photo
03: Alan Ruben displays the lumberjacking
skills that all our members have refined to such a high degree.
- Photo
04: Toby Tanser and Tom Phillips at
the front of the starting line, exchanging tips. Behind
them is Isaya Okwiya, who has a bigger worry --- he has
no idea what his relay partner looks like!
- Photo
05: The race does not start until Channel 4 (WNBC)'s
Audrey Puente can get a live shot.
- Photo
06: For this race, the CPTC photographer also acted
as the NYRRC website photographer. This is one photo that
would never make it to the other site, but it is quite typical
of what appears here.
- Photo
07: Kevin Arlyck had high hopes for his two-person
coed team with Margaret Angell, until he heard that the
Kim Griffin-Andrey Baranov team was also in the
field. At which point, he said, "Where is Kim Griffin?
I want to see if I can tie her shoelaces together ..."
This picture shows Kim Griffin talking with a friend, and
her shoelaces are safe so far. P.S. Final time --- Baranov-Griffin
1:55:39, 1st place; Arlyck-Angell 2:03:57, 2nd place. More
interesting, Borrero-Borrero, 1:58:13 won the two-person men's
division, slower than the co-ed twosome.
4.8 MARK
- Photo
11: Opposite interpretations of the shortest tangent
--- Peter Allen on one side of the road and Dave Howard
on the other side.
- Photo
12: Vincent Trinquesse blocks the sight of
Gordon Bakoulis, who was quite patient on the first lap
before turning on the afterburners.
- Photo
13: Slim photo of Bill Komaroff
- Photo
14: Fortunately for Jon Weilbaker, our photographer
was old enough to recognize this singlet.
- Photo
15: The wall of orange --- Margaret Angell, Tyronne
Culpepper, Harry Morales, James Siegel --- is easily the most
recognizable colors in the park, but the man to their left (Ramon
Bermo) deserves not to be recognized. Just behind Ramon
Bermo is a new member Patrick Cowden, who haven't managed
to get a singlet yet (unlike Ramon who elected NOT to wear his).
- Photo
16: Is that group of people interested in chatting,
or are they interested in catching Michelle Rossettie (UATH)?
- Photo
17: Cat Goodridge, Jerome O'Shaughnessy
and Eve Kaplan in final preparating for the Boston Marathon.
- Photo
18: Whereas other people form relay teams to beat
Toby Tanser, Blair Boyer's goal is a lot simpler.
He wanted only not to be lapped by Toby Tanser. Since Toby
planned to run 5:30/miles, all Blair had to is to reach 15 miles
in 1:50. Unfortunately, Toby missed his estimate and finished
in 1:49:10!
- Photo
19: This picture of Sarah Gross can be used
to falsely advertise that running is a serene activity.
- Photo
20: How many of you have met our new member Robin
Roberts? But now you all know her.
- Photo
21: Frank Schneiger's question about his
partner, "How did Irene look when you saw her?" led
to this dumb answer, "She looked good, of course. What
kind of question is that?"
- Photo
22: Who got Ana Echeverri into a 20 miler?
9.8 MILES
- Photo
31: Toby Tanser in second place. The
expression on his face is what gives running a bad name.
- Photo
32: Members of our two winning relay teams.
Two wining teams? How is that possible? Graeme
Reid is part of the four-men team and Richie Borrero
is part of the two-men team.
- Photo
33: This year, Alan Ruben is going to Boston.
It will also be his wife Gordon Bakoulis' debut as a master
marathoner.
- Photo
34: In Boston, Alan Ruben will be joined
by his friend Peter Allen.
- Photo
35: Dave Howard asked afterwards, "I
hope there are not too many pictures of me in pain, because there
was plenty of that after being out with an injury for three months."
- Photo
36: MCNY's Aimee Landry partners with Josh
Friedman today. Josh wrote this note: "Thanks to
my partner, I got my first hardware at a
NYRRC event. Good day!"
- Photo
37: Vincent Trinquesse chasing Magdalena
Visser. Actually, Magdalena ran the first leg of the
relay (29:27), and this is her warm-down loop.
- Photo
38: This was a cold and windy day, so you want to
stay behind other people. The exception is when you have
a tail wind blasting from behind, in which case everybody (including
Rick Shaver) wants as much of it as they can.
- Photo
39: Harry Morales stalked by James Siegel.
The wall of orange was broken up because Margaret Angell
sprinted ahead to finish her relay leg. About 200m before
the exchange zone, Margaret passed master runner Gillian Horovitz.
Afterwards, Margaret said, "I'm lucky to pass the master
runner who was running the full twenty miler." Well,
the reality was that there was still another master runner (Gordon
Bakoulis) in the twenty miler far ahead. Stacy Creamer
consoled Margaret with these famous words, "On this team,
you cannot age gracefully. Age has nothing to do with it."
- Photo
40: Jon Weilbaker
- Photo
41: Tyronne Culpepper said, "The reason
that our group broke up was that Central Park Track Club cheering
squad. When the other guys heards the cheers, they just
pushed along. I was going to run at that pace."
- Photo
42: Tag team match with Irene Jackson-Schon
and Frank Schneiger.
- Photo
43: The Bostonians --- Eve Kaplan, Jerome
O'Shaughnessy and Cat Goodridge.
- Photo
44: Another Bostonian Sandra Scibelli, who
said, "I do Boston because I'm from New England."
- Movie 01:
Graeme Reid is the lucky person who got extensive television
coverage.
15 MILES
- Photo
51: By the time you get to the third loop, this
race can get congested and confusing. Here is Toby Tanser
running through a crowd.
- Photo
52: Craig Chilton asks, "Where is Toby
Tanser? Did I bring enough money to pay for his brunch?"
- Photo
53: Fit and ready for Boston --- Alan Ruben.
- Photo
54: Although the best photo of Gordon Bakoulis
went to the NYRRC website, we saved one for our website.
- Photo
55: For Olivier Baillet, this race is just
a warmup for the real event --- the Central Park biathlon season
opener.
- Photo
56: Compared to Peter Allen's favorite race
(the Escarpment Trail Run), this race is just a walk in the park.
- Photo
57: New runners enjoy the luxury of being to set
personal records at every new distance. But for this race,
Josh Friedman actually has a previous time in the same
leg in the same race last year. Today 1:06:18, 1:08:08 last
year.
- Photo
58: The runner next to our Rick Shaver is
Miguel Oyorzaval, who had plenty of friends and families
taking photos and videos of him during the race. The difference
is that they probably take their trove home to watch it.
As for us, we take loads of pictures and we publish them for the
whole wide word to see.
- Photo
59: Harry Morales said, "I am going
to try to stay with Rick Shaver. The problem is that, even
though he is ten years older than me, I don't think I can't stay
with him."
- Photo
60: Bola Awofeso on one side, Jean Chodnick-Stemm
(WS) on the other side.
- Photo
61: Another photographer is capturing evidence of
a violation of the rules of competition: "For the safety
of all participants, and to satisfy insurance requirements, no
skates, baby strollers, baby joggers, headphones, or animals are
permitted in NYRRC events." To claifiy any potential
misunderstanding, the animal in question is not Jon Weilbaker.
- Photo
62: Bill Komaroff introduced himself after
the race, "I'm Bill Komaroff ... you know ... the
new team member with the e-mail problem." Oh, yes,
that was a long, long story that involves sending someone back
to typing school ...
- Photo
63: Ellen Wallop to Blair Boyer, "Smile!"
No smile from Blair because he just got lapped by Toby Tanser.
- Photo
64: The Bostonians (Eve Kaplan, Cat Goodridge
and Jerome O'Shaughnessy) has just inducted an honorary
member, Margaret Angell. Although Margaret
will be in London this year, she was a member of the Harvard track
team.
- Photo
65: Wake up, Ana Echeverri! There is
an emergency (not at the maternity ward) because this is a race.
20 MILES (FINISH)
- Photo
71: Waiting for the winner are Eddie Coyle
(Daily News) and the real CPTC photographer Ellen Wallop.
- Photo
72: Second place finisher Toby Tanser is
flanked by photographers of all manners.
- Photo
73: Although our four men relay team lost to Toby
Tanser, they were the top team in their division. Stuart
Calderwood breaks the tape in 1:52:39. We remind everyone
that there are three master runners on this team.
- Photo
74: Group portrait of the winning four-men relay
team: Stuart Calderwood, Tom Phillips, Craig Chilton,
Olivier Baillet. Wait a minute! Olivier Baillet?
Where did he come from? Olivier is the stand-in here, because
Graeme Reid was out doing extra mileage.
- Photo
75: Alan Ruben in 1:54:59, 8th overall, 1st
masters. He said before the race, "I want to run 5:45/mile."
He ended with a 5:44 average.
- Photo
76: You advance in this world by rewarding your
friends and punishing your enemies. In gratitude for Famous
Saying #1221, we publish this photo of Stephen Marsalee
(NYH). While you reading this, Stephen, why don't you bring
Diane Kenna's
attention to the rule that race numbers should be visibly secured
in front and not to be folded, mutilated or hidden from view?
(Just kidding ...)
- Photo
77: Peter Allen
- Photo
78: Josh Feldman said, "When Gordon
Bakoulis came up to me at the 14 mile mark, I wanted to run
with her. But she was running at 6 minute/mile pace, so
I had to let her go."
- Photo
79: Harry Morales fell one second short of
catching Rick Shaver. The propriety of passing your
senior teammate at the finish line is a subject of controversy
around here (see Famous
Saying #1250).
- Photo
80: Guillermo Rojas shows more orange than
the Orange.
- Photo
81: James Siegel
- Photo
82: Tyronne Culpepper said, "I was with
Gordon Bakoulis during the first loop, and she was saying
how she didn't feel well." So how can we learn to not
feel well ...?
- Photo
83: Josh Friedman
- Photo
84: Why does Blair Boyer have such an expression
of pain? Because the Central Park Track Club chorus line
singing "Happy Birthday" to him was really painful to
listen to! If there were a club team championship for choir
singing, we shouldn't even bother to show up.
POST-RACE ACTIVITIES
- Photo
91: Audrey Kingsley says, "Oh, you are
taking a picture of me!?" "Actually, no.
Could you move aside please, because you are blocking our view
of something interesting behind you? You see, someone is
taking off their pants ..."
- Photo
92: The most serious injuries are those that occur
when you trip over their own pants and shoes. This is when
your teammate can help you by offering a friendly shoulder.
- Photo
93: Good deeds must be rewards (and evil deeds must
be punished). For such extraordinary services, James
Siegel offers Audrey Kingsley a banana.
- Photo
94: This is Josh Feldman practicing the
art of lumberjacking. The person leaning against the tree
is Arnold Seto (5th overall today), a friend of Josh from
Boston.
THE MAIN EVENTS
The bet between the four-men Central Park Track
Club team (Tom Phillips, Graeme Reid, Craig Chilton, Stuart Calderwood)
and Team Bagel (Toby Tanser, Toby Tanser, Toby Tanser, Toby Tanser)
was for lunch (not to last more than the time it took for the slower
team to finish). So the group set off on the long trek to
the Starbuck cafe on Broadway and 98th Street.
- Photo
101: Unfortunately, our star Toby Tanser got stopped
by fans and had to take out a stick.
- Photo
102: Toby demonstrates the proper way to apply the stick
(as in www.thestick.com
).
- Photo
103: We can safely assume that Toby will be able to 'catch
up,' so let us make our way out there first. But can you
puzzle out what is the red thing sticking out of that person in
front of us? P.S. Stacy Creamer has antenna
to detect cameras. She gets a mention here to maintain her
google rating leadership.
- Photo
104: Finally, at Starbucks. This is Toby
Tanser's starter course (the bagels are from Lenny's across
the street).
- Photo
105: Kevin Arlyck makes an astonishing proclamation,
"I have never been to a Starbucks before." And
we thought that there was nothing that could be more astonishing
than his 4 minute PR today.
- Photo
106: Margaret Angell leans down to the crotch-level
camera and demanded to know, "What are you doing down there?"
- Photo
107: We are engaged in the business of investigative
journalism; in this case, we are watching how Margaret ties her
shoe laces and we will report this very useful piece of information
to all those who need to know. Recently, we were accredited
as journalists to cover a major book launch (technical note: since
this writer is Chinese, that makes him a 'yellow journalist' and
his work is therefore 'yellow journalism.' How appropriate!).
- Photo
108: The other main event of the day is Blair
Boyer's birthday cake. To be more precise, we are talking
about the cup cakes that Audrey Kingsley found locally
("they're not as good as the East Side bakery that I go to.").
- Photo
109: Late-arriving Graeme Reid picked up
their team award trophies: "I was getting some extra miles
in, and when I passed by the finish line, they happened to be
announcing our names."
- Photo
110: Anchor leg Stuart Calderwood displays
his trophy.
- Photo
111: This is the dessert course of Toby's treat.
TOBY'S FOOD REVIEW (or so we imagined): "The
bagels and coffee were everything that I knew well and expected.
The agreed upon session was to last no more than the time that the
losing team took to finish the 20 miles (1:52:39), but it seemed
that they all disappeared before time was up. P.S. And
Tom Phillips was not there at all!"
