Thursday Night at the Armory

Jim Aneshansley

During the winter indoor track season, the New York Road Runners Club sponsors a series of races known as Thursday Night at the Races.  These evening track meets have heats for runners of all speeds, are extremely informal (though well organized), and are lots of fun!  Those who are registered users of the Armory can run these races for free.

  • Photo 04:  When was the last time Toby Tanser in an indoor track race?  "My one and only indoor race came in 1994 when I ran the Swedish Indoor Championships.  I was sick with a cold all week and was eating 12 oranges a day in an attempt to 'get well soon.'  The Thursday before the race I ran a treadmill work out, 5 x 600m @ 2:40 pace per kilometer with a minute's rest.  I knew then I could race. The race was in Malmo on the same track that Wilson Kipketer used to train on, it was fast and good. The large crowd felt as though they were on top of the track and were very vocal.  I ended up with a silver, I had got a taste for the indoors and can't understand why nearly seven years later I still have not raced again indoors!"
  • Photo 05Before the race, Toby Tanser offered this prognosis:  "The 3000m should see me struggle, I am running with a semi-pulled muscle right now and stretching every 3 mins to try and get pain free."
