Valentine's Day Twosome

Stacy Creamer, Toby Tanser, Gladees Prieur

TWO MILE RACE

STARTING LINE

  • Photo 01:  Why is this website the greatest place for photos?
--- Could it be our camera equipment?  Not really, because you can buy Sony digital cameras at Amazon.com
--- Could it be our photo editing software?  Not really, because you can buy Adobe Photoshop at Amazon.com
--- Could it be our skilled photographers?   Not really --- what skills do they have?
So what is it then?  It's the PEOPLE, stupid!  Take a look of this picture of Stacy Creamer, Toby Tanser, Mary Rosado and Gladees Prieur (MCNY).
  • Photo 02Toby Tanser's partner today is MCNY's Gladees Prieur, well known to people at the Armory who watch Gladees glide around the track (e.g.  John Megaw once asked, "Who is that woman?  She passed me without seeming to put in any effort.").  And look at the people behind them --- do they know a good thing or what?
  • Photo 03Richie Borrero and Stuart Calderwood.  While Richie ran today, his brother Danny was the videocamera person.
  • Photo 04:  During the wait between the start of the 10K and then the 2 Mile races, you can (1) chat or (2) take a nap.

1.75 MILE MARK

  • Photo 11Toby Tanser continues the streak by winning his sixth race in the park.  Unfortunately, because there were two different races at the same time today, he couldn't win both and therefore no longer lays claim to be the one and only race winner in the park this year.  (Prepared script for Toby in his daily column: 'I won my race today, and all they said was that I didn't win the other race!')
  • Photo 12Richie Borrero was third overall
  • Photo 13Stuart Calderwood was fourth overall and 1st masters.  1-3-4 was a nice showing for the Central Park Track Club.  Plus 1-2 coed twosomes.
  • Photo 14Gladees Prieur was fifth overall (men and women) and runaway female winner.
  • Photo 15Herbie Medina (Millrose)
  • Photo 16Stacy Creamer was third overall female.  This is her third masters win in a row this week over very different events: indoor 1500m at the Colgate Games in Madison Square Garden, the vertical Empire State Building Run-Up and now a 2 mile road race.

  • Photo 18:  Uncooperating male runner gave us Sylvie Kimché and only half of Irene Jackson-Schon

10K RACE

STARTING LINE

  • Photo 51Josh Friedman is a graduate student.  According to one account, he majors on visiting the Central Park Track Club website
  • Photo 52:  CAUTION:  Your eyes may be blinded by the orange of Sylvie Kimché, Stuart Calderwood and Stacy Creamer
  • Photo 53Alan Ruben and Gordon Bakoulis, with one of Gordon's MCNY team member Amy Landry
  • Photo 54:  The main threat to the Ruben-Bakoulis twosome is Andrey Baranov and Kim Griffin
  • Photo 55Kellie Quinones and Jay Borok.  Kellie wondered which other teammembers are in the race, and when the Ruben-Bakoulis twosome was pointed out to them, she said, "Oh, that's Gordon!  I've just been reading her book!"

2.5 MILE MARK, HARLEM HILL (UPHILL, OF COURSE) (photo credit: Bola Awofeso)

  • Missing Photo:  When the lead runner came and it was someone other than Toby Tanser, the photographer concluded, "Oh, then Toby must be running the other race."
  • Photo 61Alan Ruben, looking to three-peat as twosome winner
  • Photo 62Gordon Bakoulis, the 'better half'
  • Photo 63Stephanie Gould, in a characteristic floppy non-orange shirt
  • Photo 64Fasil Yilma said afterwards, "Oh, it is so hard to come back after a while."  Let's roll the videotape back --- his last race was the Boston Marathon before which he said, "Oh, I've been rollerblading exclusively for the last 18 months, so I don't know how I can do a marathon."  His time?  3:06.
  • Photo 65Kellie Quinones is just 10 seconds behind Fasil at this point.
  • Photo 66Michael Rosenthal
  • Photo 67Carol Tyler

6.1 MILE MARK (UPHILL, OF COURSE)

  • Photo 68:  In second place was Alan Ruben, behind Andrey Baranov.
  • Photo 69:  In first place among females was Gordon Bakoulis, ahead of Kim Griffin.  So the Ruben-Bakoulis team finished 2-1 while the Baranov-Griffin team finished 1-2.  Precisely for these reasons, the race was scored by combined time.  The Ruben-Bakoulis won by 1:09:19 over 1:09:40, for their third victory in a row in the twosome 10K race.
  • Photo 70Kellie Quinones blew away teammate Fasil Yilma in the latter stages of the race.  When she passed him, he said something to her but she did not respond.  Afterwards, she told him that she was working too hard to talk.  Hey, don't forget --- when you are in a race, it's always an emergency!  No small talk, please!

CROSS TRAINING

  • Photo 71Joey Ruben says, "There is no money in running.  I would rather become a soccer player (see 1998 photo)  Therefore, I am training my header against the garbage bin."
  • Photo 72Sammy Ruben says, "Re-hydration would accompany any form of training."

MISSING PHOTOS

  • Team in training: Jerome O'Shaughnessy, Shula Sarner, Cat Goodridge, Sandra Scibelli
  • Nathan Klejman, proprietor of 1-800-BABYSIT, who made the Ruben-Bakoulis victory possible
  • Noel Comess in the race --- because he was NOT in the race! (technical note: gratuitous name-dropping to boost google rating)
  • Audrey Kingsley in the race --- because she was NOT in the race!  (technical note: gratuitous name-dropping to boost google rating)

Q&A (and it won't be frequently answered!)

  • Noah Perlis wrote: "I just saw your photos for twosome races and the non-competing mentions made me think, if you list my races at the USATF-NJ Masters Indoor Championships today in the format below, will that boost my google rating?  How much extra will it cost?"

ANSWER:  It wouldn't have made any difference at all, since the google rating is a count of the number of pages on which your name is mentioned, and the number of times that your name appears within a page (as long as it is at least once) is immaterial.  However, by asking that question and having it posted on this page for a race that you were nowhere near, you have just gotten another google rating point.
