2002 Manhattan Half Marathon

RACE CONDITIONS: HOT AND HUMID

MILE 5 (East 86th Street)

  • Photo 01Alan Ruben is in the top ten.  The park background looks hazy because there was a humid haze which hung like pea soup.

  • Photo 02Peter Allen.  On this morning, making that V-sign was a complete waste of energy.

  • Photo 03David Howard.  Bigtime wrong move by ducking behind another runner when his photographer is setting up the camera.

MILE 8 (West 83rd Street)

MILE 13 (West 66th Street)

  • Photo 31Alan Ruben.  He said to Audrey Kingsley afterwards, "This was my worst race in the whole time that you have known me."  Ditto for Audrey's own race.

  • Photo 32Peter Allen

  • Photo 33David Howard.  Our photographer asked us to post this trivia quiz: "Where is the best spot to watch a race?"  Answer:  "Right in front of the Central Park Track Club photographer!"  Apparently, people see this person with an over-sized camera and assume that he must know what is good and then they promptly park themselves right in front of him!  And this being Manhattan, his complaints are typically countered with "F*** YOU!  I have my rights!"

  • Photo 42Shelley Farmer: "I just spent nine days in France, doing the Tour de France tour and logging four hundred and fifty miles on the bike.  Unfortunately, this just meant that I am in condition for cycling.  As for running ..."

POST-RACE

  • Photo 51Brian Barry: "Of the four half marathons that I have done this year, this one has the worst conditions!"

  • Photo 52Luis Lima would agree with that sentiment

  • Photo 53Chris Price: "How about some Gatorade at the finish line?"

  • Photo 54Terri Sonenclar with the stick:  "When you are old, you have to use every trick that you know."

  • Photo 58Shelley Farmer: "Help!  I can't deal with all this!"

  • Photo 55Shelley Farmer: "I'm going to see my boyfriend downtown later in the afternoon."  As for Suso Montero, our photographer has this story: "I was taking photos, always looking for the orange singlets and ignoring everyone else (of course).  At some point, I sensed that someone had just gone by me while laughing to himself.  I turned around quickly and there was Suso Montero in black and without his own number.  Why do people take such pleasure in evading the camera?"

  • Photo 56Erika Maple-Ogita Yamazaki, Yumi Ogita and Casey Yamazaki.  Family division of labor --- mom runs while dad and daughter cheer.

  • Photo 57Yumi Ogita: "If I had one of these, I would have finished easier and earlier."

  • Photo 59Juana and Amanda Bermo.  Family division of labor: mom and daughter look after the shop while daddy disappears.
