to enter Central Park

02: At this strategic point, we have the Central
Park Track Club personal cheering squad of Andrea Ostrowski
and Jerome O'Shaughnessy.
-
Photo
03: Our cheering squad failed to identify Aubin
Sullivan. Their excuse: "We have never seen her
run ..."
-
Photo
04: Our cheering squad did identify the reason
for which we were told to stand at this corner for two hours.
The cheering squad's initial specifications were: "shaved
head, wearing white." Hmmm ... are we sure that we
have the right person?
-
Photo
05: Our cheering squad missed the other reason
why we had to be there --- all we got was Sandra Scibelli's
back.
-
Photo
06: Our cheering squad is not entirely to be blamed,
since our photographer was distracted by someone who is making
a noisy racket --- Ramon Bermo, coach of the Team In
Training runners.
-
Photo
07: Ramon Bermo tries to speak while shaking
that cowbell: "How did the team do yesterday at the Club
Team Championships? Sorry I couldn't be there because
I had to work with my runners up at Tarrytown."
-
Photo
08: Actually, we couldn't care less about whether
Ramon ran for us yesterday or not; and we were truly glad that
he did not attempt to play softball. What we really wanted
to know is about that 2:15 800m Ivy League runner. She
was right there but, unfortunately, she is camera-shy and ducked
behind her friend, who said, "Why are you taking a picture
of me? I'm not the one that you want. You want her."
Actually, we want both of you ...
-
Photo
09: So this is the picture of our two future teammates.
Or so we hope, although the negotiations with Ramon are going
poorly. Somehow our conversation took a quick turn to
a discussion of the mortgage payment on his house. We
think that he is trying to give us a hint about something ...
Meanwhile, the women wanted to know if we are a serious club.
Hmmm ... the evidence is inconclusive. On one hand, to
say that we are not serious would be to demean the entire New
York City running community, as we are currently leading the
New York Road Runners open women's championship series.
On the other hand, even a cursory perusal of this website (beginning
with this page) would tell you that seriousness is not our forte.
Perhaps the best summary is this --- this is an environment
in which you can achieve individual and team goals while having
a lot of fun --- just take a look at our two medley relay teams
at the 2002 USATF
National Indoor Championships.
-
Photo
10: And then we saw the Team In Training triathlon
coach, who greeted us the usual way --- with his back turned.
-
Photo
11: Scott Willett: "I understand that
you took some photos of my family at the New
York City Cycling Championships. But I did not
look at them because I was afraid that you will find out that
I've been looking at the website." Really!???
"Notwithstanding the fact that I am coaching another team
at this moment --- and in a triathlon --- you will please note
that I am wearing an orange t-shirt." Okay, so we
will not ask him about how he did in the Great Hudson Swim yesterday,
where we know he got beat by one (and only one) woman again.
-
Photo
12: Scott Willett: "Excuse me,
but I have to take a cellular phone call from my assistant ...
Ross, do you want to speak to Roland? ... You don't know
anyone by that name? ... Okay, so where are you now? ...
57th Street? ... What are you doing there? ... I need
you to be at 110th Street!" So, this is the modern
wireless-enabled coaching outfit except they need a Palm Pilot
for people's names.
-
Photo
13: Sandra Scibelli was finally located
and without the help of our cheering squad.
-
Photo
14: Jesse Lansner: "Before this weekend,
I had to decide which race I should do hard --- the Club Team
Championships and the New York City Triathlon. I can report
that, thanks to the heat, hills, humidity, and my sudden inability
to ride a bicycle, I did both races hard but, unfortunately,
neither one fast."
-

15: G'mo Rojas: "The New York Road
Runners make wonderfully colorful t-shirts." Disclosure:
G'mo is responsible for NYRR marketing.
-
Photo
16: Sandra Scibelli: "It was HOT out
there!" Temperature: 90 degrees; humidity: 50%.
-
Photo
17: The problem with triathlons is that it is
impossible to track people down because of the different colors
of clothing. For example, we missed Sean Fitzpatrick
until he went by while saying "How are you doing?"
We even missed Matt Newman completely even though he
was completely draped in orange --- too unexpected! Bill
Komaroff wears the generic white and offers this justification:
"I won't wear the team orange when I know that I will be
getting a terrible time."

72nd Street in front of the Daniel Webster statue, Ramon
Bermo is directing the triathletes to make that final left
turn. He is supervised by David Smith.

21: And here is the person who must not get lost
or else our whole day is lost ...
-

22: The proudest person today is Shelley Farmer,
who saw her major project succeed.

23: ... and, by the way, Barb Lindquist won
the USA National Triathlon title today.
