You Gotta Have Park

Victor Osayi

This race was noteworthy on account of the cold, driving rain.  The weather conditions would mean instant death to our CD-writable digital camera, which was why all these pictures were taken with the palm-size stealth camera instead.  Therefore, we did not have the usual 20X zooming capability.  We regret that we were not able to be present at the swimming pool-sized puddle on the west side, for any picture take there would be instant classics.

PRE-RACE

  • Photo 01:  This naked man said, "This is so unlike London where I came from.  There is never any fog in London and it never rains there --- except at Wimbledon."

  • Photo 02Tony Ruiz to Jerome O'Shaughnessy: "Jerome, you're not cold, are you?  You're never cold."  Technical note: Jerome is not wearing a shiny plastic raincoat; he's wearing an inverted garbage bag to be discarded as soon as the race starts.

  • Photo 03Alan Ruben at the starting line.  Before the race, the consensus was: "Alan may be the only one who actually likes these conditions."  The blur in the picture came from moisture on the camera lens.

  • Photo 04:  A special thanks must go to Kevin Arlyck, who was a little bit sore on the Achilles tendon but ran as he was projected to be among our top five present.

  • Photo 05:  Given these conditions, it was simply in everyone's interest to get the race started as quickly as possible.

1.2 MILES

  • Photo 06Steve Paddock and Erik Goetze.  Race rules states that "all runners should stay inside the recreational lanes marked by the orange cones" upon pain of disqualification.  In this section, there is about three inches of water inside, so everyone went outside of the lane and everyone should be disqualified ...

  • Photo 07Isaya Okwiya.  In addition to the atrocious weather conditions, travel was made even more complicated by MTA track work on the Q line, which necessitates the use of a shuttle bus.

POSTLUDE

  • Shortly after 10:45am, about 45 minutes after the race start, the deluge stopped.
