30th CPTC Anniversary Party

THE COOKING

  • Photo 16:  The KP staff peels the potatoes and slices the onions: Shelley Farmer, Jim Aneshansley, Sandra Scibelli, Aubin Sullivan, Ross Galitsky

  • Photo 17:  And then the director Kim Mannen has to sprinkle just the right amount of pepper.  Unfortunately, there is no picture of Noel Comess who was taking these pictures.  But we are looking at the famous kitchen of Noel, which is famous because it is bigger than the apartments that most of us live in.

THE RECEPTION

  • Photo 01Sarah Gross checked in people at the entrance.

  • Photo 02Laura Lee Kozusko prepares the identification buttons

  • Photo 03:  At the Thursday night workout, there was a swirling rumor that this year's event will be 'classy' with only wine being served.  Of course, we all comforted ourselves with the fact that we can always go to Jerome O'Shaughnessy for the 'real' stuff.

  • Photo 04:  Not to fear though, as there was plenty of beer (especially Rolling Rock) to go around.

  • Photo 05Ross Galitsky: "I am a red wine person."  Bola Awofeso: "I was out of the country for a week and I had no internet access.  I came here today to find out that I've been nominated for a track workout."

  • Photo 06:  What are those posters on the wall behind Charlotte Cutler and Chris Potter?

  • Photo 07:  Those are the best marathon times by Central Park Track Club members as compiled by Alan Ruben and being posted by Stuart Calderwood.

  • Photo 08Kim Mannen: "This little Texan is going to be really tired tonight after working so hard ..."

  • Photo 09Noel Comess was our co-food director.

  • Photo 10Yves-Marc Courtines: "I'm only playing with the food ..."

  • Photo 11:  The perfect photo of generational continuity: the generations of team singlets hanging on the wall, a contemporary warrior Tom Phillips and a future (but already orange-clad) baby Kieran McShane Calderwood.

  • Photo 12Marty Levine: "My rule is --- no shirt and tie on weekends."

  • Photo 13:  The party girls Ali Rosenthal and Margaret Angell.

  • Photo 14:  More party girls:  Andrea Costella and Laura Ford

  • Photo 15:  The buttons are supposed to allow people from different generations to know each other.  Hmmm ... could it be that the legendary Ross Galitsky, who completed the Triple Ironman triathlon, is actually a lovely woman ... ?

THE AWARDS CEREMONY

The awards ceremony took place in the Sanctuary of St. Peter's Church.  Here, our organizers followed our advice to every wedding party, "Never let the photographer kidnap the party!!!"  So the lights were dimmed down, and most of our photos will be dark and grainy.  For the details of the proceedings, you can read the entire script with the slides.

  • Photo 101:  The core of tonight's event is the awards ceremony.  The two masters of ceremony are Stacy Creamer and Tom Phillips, who are reprising roles that they did in the early 1990's.  Job requirements?  Public speaking experience, and the ability to pronounce some funny-sounding names.  In this case, Stacy and Tom are reading from a script which did not emerge until late last night and was still being revised throughout the day.

  • Photo 131:  Open remarks from current president Alan Ruben.  In protest of his triple overtime duties, Alan is dressing down as the compensation.

  • Photo 132Alan Ruben awards a specially made orange jersey to ... that person who was conveniently not present to accept, as usual.

  • Photo 102:  In the audience are Kim Mannen and Noel Comess with their companions.  This is a significant development because the people who are in charge of the food are usually too busy to watch the ceremony.

  • Photo 103:  First up, the track awards were given out by coaches Devon Martin-Sargent and Brian Denman.

  • Photo 133Devon Margin-Sargent and Brian Denman

  • Photo 134Charlotte Cutler

  • Photo 135Chris Potter has to wait for the coaches to find his trophy

  • Photo 136Sue Pearsall

  • Photo 104:  The four award winners were: Sue Pearsall for most improved track, Alston Brown for best sprinter, Chris Potter for best track comeback and Charlotte Cutler for best middle-distance.  Not present was Naomi Reynolds for most versatile.  Due to the extended length of this year's program, there was no recitation of their respective feats this year.

  • Photo 105: The Best in Track award goes to the WR-setting 4x800m M60+ relay team of Dan Hamner, Norman Goluskin, Jim Aneshansley and Sid Howard.

  • Photo 137:  The Best in Track again.

  • Photo 106:  The triathlete and road awards were given out by coach Tony Ruiz.  Sorry, we don't have an official triathlete coach.  At least, not yet.

  • Photo 107:  Our female triathlete of the year was Stefani Jackenthal.

  • Photo 138 Stefani Jackenthal

  • Photo 108:  Our female rookie of the year is Ali Rosenthal.  Of course, this 'rookie of the year' is really for a 'Central Park Track Club newcomer' as the receipient may have been running for a long, long time before.  The same comment would apply to the male rookie of the year Armando Oliveira, who was already a proven winner before joining us.

  • Photo 139Ali Rosenthal with her signature photo projeceted in the background

  • Photo 109:  The most improved female runner is Ana Echeverri.

  • Photo 110:  The most improved male runner is Brad Weiss

  • Photo 111:  Men's open long distance award goes to Kevan Huston

  • Photo 112:  Women's open short distance award goes to Stephanie Gould

  • Photo 140:  Women's open long distance award goes to Margaret Angell

  • Photo 141:  Men's master short distance award goes to Peter Allen

  • Photo 113:  Men's master long distance award goes to Alan Ruben.  Please note that Ana Echeverri and Brad Weiss are looking backawards at the wall above their heads, where the accompanying slides are being projected.

  • Photo 142:  Women's master short distance: Sylvie Kimché

  • Photo 143:  Women's master long distance: Yumi Ogita

  • Photo 114:  Our brightest star of the year is Alayne Adams, our Best Performer.

PRE-DINNER

  • Photo 46Steven Paddock: "I flew in from London just for this.  At least, I got an award."

  • Photo 47: Audrey Kingsley: "Love and kisses for putting me on the front page collage of the commemorative booklet (note: bottom right corner with her best smile)."

  • Photo 48Roland Soong: "My prize tonight is not to have the jacket on me, but to have Shelley Farmer draped all over me!"

  • Photo 49Craig Chilton: "I showed my wife the comment about the Commonwealth runners at the Club Championships and she did not understand at all!"  Yes, but Craig is in the fourth row and fourth column of the front page collage.

  • Photo 50Ali Rosenthal: "Guess what I found!?  Sid Howard did not win any awards in 1998!"

  • Photo 122Kevin Arlyck

  • Photo 123Stephanie Gould and Thomas Pennell

  • Photo 124Norman Goluskin

  • Photo 125G'mo Rojas and Mary Jo Pasion

  • Photo 126:  Whose kids are these?

  • Photo 128Alan Ruben and Peggy Bermel Brennan, sister of Jack Brennan

THE DINNER

  • Photo 51Kim Mannen: "This is the big moment.  I hope they like the food ..."

  • Photo 52Richard Kixmiller: "Did I authorize them to make so much food?  I hope that they are not exceeding budget!"

  • Photo 53:  The food queue, with Patrick Cowden, David Pullman

  • Photo 54Brad Weiss and Brian Barry.

  • Photo 55:  Triathletes row: Olivier Baillet, Stephanie Gould and Ross Galitsky

  • Photo 56Aubin Sullivan: "The commemorative booklet is a good place mat."

  • Photo 57Kim Mannen: "This is my favorite dessert."

  • Photo 58Kim Mannen: "Perfect.  Just sweet enough."

  • Photo 59Yves-Marc Courtines: "I'm so happy that they let me wash the dishes too."

  • Photo 60:  Dessert samplers Audrey Kingsley, Erik Goetze and Josh Feldman

  • Photo 121Sylvie Kimché on the food line

THE DANCING

  • Photo 61Stacy Creamer: "I know my dance partner ..."

  • Photo 62Stacy Creamer & Stuart Calderwood on the dance floor.

  • Photo 63Harriet Zucker, Ellen and Michael Wallop.  Michael has a big smile because he just saw himself 'prominently' featured in the Commemorative Booklet.  Harriet and Ellen are our pioneer triathletes who jointly received the tri-athletes of the year awards in the year 1983.

  • Photo 64:  A pair of very active dancers

  • Photo 65:  Have no fear, for Alayne Adams is not wearing the next generation of race singlets ...

THE END

  • Photo 72Candy Strobach smiles at Marty Stanton waving a loaf of bread.  Obviously, the bread comes courtesy of Noel Comess' Tom Cat Bakery.  Do you realize that Jean Valjean went to jail for 19 years for doing just that?

  • Photo 73:  Counting up the gate receipts are Richard Kixmiller and Sarah Gross.  Richard was given the Founders Award tonight precisely because he kept tight control on the finances.

  • Photo 74Jerome O'Shaugnessy: "I don't know why I am so popular tonight.  Any number of people have come up to me to ask for the 'real' stuff.  Do I look like a liquor store?"

  • Photo 75Tony Ruiz to Harry Lichtenstein: "Sorry, Harry, you can't have those orange and white balloons because I'm taking them home."

  • Photo 76Jonathan Federman: "I don't need another picture of me drinking beer."  Maybe, maybe not.  But he doesn't have a previous picture of him drinking beer with Shelley Farmer.

  • Photo 77Jesus Montero: "I'm ranked first as the person with the most number of photos showing me talking on the cellular phone."

  • Photo 78Laura Ford: "Trust me --- Andrea Costella and I are old enough to drink ..."

  • Photo 79James Siegel has the knack of having other people's girlfriends hanging all over him ...

  • Photo 80:  Contemporary readership research is a quantitative game of numbers --- how many readers does a publication have?  The quality of the reader and the reading experience are often neglected.  We ask you to look at the next four photos of the readers of the commemorative booklet and see how their expressions inform.  First up, Shula Sarner looks distinctively serious in reading the Diversity page.  Perhaps she is counting --- a United Nations diplomat, a Nigerian who works for New York State, a Stuyvesant High junior, a Canadian triathlete couple, a German chemist, a FDNY captain and so on.

  • Photo 81Shula Sarner is now on the CPTC Presidents page, with a slight smile.  We will bet that she will keel over laughing when she reaches the last section from Alan Ruben: "I deposed the universally hated John Kenney in a bloodless coup.  I lit the fuse then disappeared for two weeks on the pretext that my mother had just died.  By the time I returned John was begging to take over.  Now I feel like I have two jobs.  I've learnt what the phrase 'be careful what you wish for' means."

  • Photo 82Shula Sarner is now scanning the collage on the front cover.  Her expression says, "Oh my God!  Kim Mannen must hate this photo!"

  • Photo 83Sandra Scibelli has a similar reaction upon seeing the collage.

  • Photo 84Laura Lee Kozusko: "I never thought that making buttons would be so much fun."

  • Photo 85:  Here is another photo sequence.  Kieran McShane Calderwood: "What is going on here?"

  • Photo 86Kieran McShane Calderwood: "Yes, Ali Rosenthal taught me how to stick my tongue at people."

  • Photo 87Kieran McShane Calderwood: "It's mommy and daddy serenading me, just like every day at home."
