Over the past ten years, CPTC orange has been tearing up the track!

1992 opened with the men's Sprint Medley Relay team of Dan Hamner, Sid Howard, Les Wright, and Cliff Pauling breaking the World and American Records for the 50-59 age group with a 3:58.58.  Six years later, we could look back on this list of victories for the masters men

1996             Millrose Games         4 x 400m             (40-49)

1997             Penn Relays             4 x 100m             (40-49)

1997             Penn Relays             4 x 400m             (40-49)

1998             Millrose Games        4 x 400m             (40-49)

1998             Penn Relays             4 x 100m             (40-49)

1998             Penn Relays             4 x 100m             (50-59)

In that same race, the CPTC women's 4 x 800m team of  Kim Mannen, Sue Pearsall, Denise Whitaker-Crain, and Devon Martin-Sargent set an American Record of 10:20.5 in the 30-39 age category. Also in 2002, the masters women’s 4 x 400m team took third at the Millrose Games--the first time that a women’s masters relay was included at the meet, thanks to the persistent efforts of Mary V. Rosado. And to finish off a  banner decade for the club, two CPTC women's open Distance Medley Relay teams captured 3rd and 6th places at the National Indoor Championships, CPTC's first appearance at an open U.S. Nationals!

Several individual CPTC runners have also attained worldwide prominence over the last ten years, with medals, awards, and records abounding.  Many of the best performances have been run at the masters World Championships: Cliff Pauling won the gold medal in the 800 meters for the 55-59 age group in 1991; Sid Howard took silver in the 800m (55-59) in 1995; Ed Gonera won gold in the 100m (45-49) in 1997; Rae Baymiller and Sid Howard brought home twin 800-meter silvers (50-54 and 60-64, respectively) in 2001; and Devon Martin-Sargent took a gold (1500m) and a silver (800m) in the 30-34 category in 2002.

USATF named two CPTC runners "Masters Track Athlete of the Year": Sid Howard (60-64) in 1999, and  Devon Martin-Sargent (30-34) in 2001.

Alston Brown had a unique winter of 2001:  He ran faster than the listed 400-meter World Record for his age-group (50-54) three times—and each was in either an unsanctioned meet or a race that lacked the required electronic timing.  (His 51.9 at age 52 is good enough for the CPTC record books.  How many people out there can run a 400 in fewer seconds than the number of years they’ve lived?)

But the highest highlight of the decade remains Super Sid Howard's performances in 1999: first, he shattered the 60-64 age-group indoor 800m World and American records on his 60th birthday with a 2:14.75.  Then he set another 60-64 800m American record on the outdoor track, with an even faster 2:12.71.   (Back-to-back quarters in 66--at age sixty?)
