Step Into Urban Athletics

The Urban Athletics sports store is located in the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center downtown.  Obviously, it had to be closed following September 11, 2001.  In September 16th, 2002, Urban Athletics re-opened for business.  On this day (November 23rd, 2002), a special Step Into The Store promotional event was held.

  • Photo 01:  The Urban Athletics store as seen from the Winter Garden.

  • Photo 00:  This is today's program.

  • Photo 02:  The greeter at the door was Toby Tanser, who is the promotions officer of Urban Athletics

  • Photo 03:  Present at the store today was Central Park Track Club member Rae Baymiller, seen here talking to our founding mother Lynn Blackstone.

  • Photo 04Rae Baymiller was here to promote her clothing line known as Rae.

  • Photo 05:  Our founding father David Blackstone said, "Rae has some interesting designs.  Unfortunately, they are for slim women and definitely not for me ..."

  • Photo 06Lynn Blackstone gets ready to leave with a full shopping bag.

  • Photo 07:  Also present was Central Park Track Club's Dr. Dan Hamner to give sports advice.

  • Photo 08:  Food and drink were offered to visitors today, together with the Hudson River view on a cold, sunny afternoon.

  • Photo 09:  Among the illustrious guests are Diane Kenna and Theodore Peterson of the New York Harriers.

  • Photo 10:  Another guest is Central Park Track Club's Otto Hoering, shown here with a Russian model.  As a model, she is tall with long legs.  Indeed, she is almost as tall as Otto, who can almost challenge Joseph Kozusko for the title of the tallest team member.  If you want to talk to the lovely lady, all you have to do is fake an injury and visit Dr. Hamner's office.

  • Photo 11:  The owner of Urban Athletics is top local master Jerry Macari, who is not about to let the food go to waste.

  • Photo 12:  Serving behind the counter is Toby Tanser.

  • Photo 13:  Author Toby Tanser was also signing autographs for copies of his book Train Hard, Win Easy: The Kenyan Way.

  • Photo 14:  This is the signature on our copy of the book.

  • Photo 15:  At the end of the day, the entertainment was provided by blues-harmonica-playing Dan Hamner.

  • Photo 16:  Since 9/11, the downtown businesses have not really recovered.  There seemed to be numerous tourists coming to view Ground Zero, but few of them seemed to stop for other things.  We show this picture to remind people that the downtown area still has much to offer.  We have deliberately not reveal the subject of this picture, but we are sure that everyone will agree.
