KAWASAKI MONTHLY TIME TRIALS,
Tokyo-Yokohama, Japan (January 27, 2002)
From Charles Allard Jr.:
I ran the first race of the year today. In wet,
windy and cold weather, I particpated in the Kawasaki Monthly
Time Trials. Run along the river that seperates Tokyo from
Yokohama, the first and second largest cities in Japan, this monthly
race usually attracts a good crowd. However, the damp weather
and the relative difficulty (a 15 minute walk from the nearest
train) kept the numbers well under 50. Which is perfect
if you are looking to finish well in the standings. In fact, this
was the only thing that motivated me to leave bed in the morning.
The previous day was filled with "cross-training" in
the form of snowboarding, which is not the smartest thing before
a race. I cannot lift my arms over my head without great pain.
That comes from repeatedly falling backwards after attempting
to jump over moghuls without sufficient practice or experience.
In addition, it was so cold that I wore my (brand new) CPTC jacket
over my long sleeve shirt and race number the entire race. Thus
it was with relief that the race was only 10K long and I finished
in second place with a time of 38:40. Given the cold rain
and the inability to use my arms for sprinting, I was not unhappy.
