ARAKAWA SHIMIN MARATHON, Tokyo, Japan (March 24, 2002)

From Charles Allard Jr:

I have been amiss in reporting my running foibles. I only report these as I am afraid of being found out.

On the 13th of March I decided to test my pacing skills in the Tokyo City Marathon Run & Walk. Billed as Tokyo's version of the NYC Marathon before it became commercial, what it lacks in size it makes up for in enthusiasim. There are two races, a 10k and 20k, each with no time limits. They are run in laps around the Imperial Palace. One lap consists of about 2k of flat, 1.5k up a long hill and 1.5k down the same hill forming an almost a perfect 5k circle around acres of parkland and grass. Not being a democracy (constitutional monarchy) this oasis is virtually entirely closed to the public of course. Central park is real jewel in case anyone forgets. I used the race as an attempt to get my pacing down for the up coming London Marathon (any one else running???) and out of 33 people ended up third in 1:21:50. This was a particularly happy race for me as I ran the entire way with a visitor from the UK running in his first race in Japan who used me to push himself to a PB.  Not quite my own PB but pretty neat anyway.

On the 21st of March on a public holiday, I attempted to do a modified Thursday workout by entering a 10k race (2002 Tokyo Spring Race) available on www3.runnet.co.jp. Running the first half at about 10 seconds per k slower than the 2nd half I eked out a 38 min 10k and still came in 12th out of 357, 30 year olds (only two more years of this!!) and 34th of 1133 total guys. This only goes to show how hard CPTC runners do their workouts!!

Finally I ran a complete marathon (The Arakawa Shimin Marathon) on Sunday. Why? Well, I went out for a 20 mile run (as per my marathon training schedule) and FULLY INTENED TO STOP (as I did in the same race last year). BUT, the weather was nice, the cherry trees were in full bloom and I had just completed 20 miles close to my target time of 2:10 so I slowed down and walked and jogged the last ten k very, very slowly.  Will someone please, please please tell me if I am totally out of my mind and have totally wasted my chances for a good London Marathon finishing time??

GATE RIVER RUN 15K, Jacksonville, FL (March 9, 2002)

David Howard, 56:25
Michelle Santomassino, 1:10:08
Jane Monti, 1:13:03

From David Howard

We just got back from Jacksonville, Fla. today.  Michelle and I ran on the beach everyday except when we ran in the hellatious (sic) Gate River Run.  The temperatures during the entire race were in the 80s-- and there were plenty of long shadeless stretches.

Michelle and I did our 3 year personal worsts in this race-- we were each more than 3 minutes slower than our times in the Al Gordon 15-K.   The race was completely flat until the 7th mile-- one mile up the Hart Bridge (a.k.a. The Green Monster)-- with the sun firing down on us it made this hill especially unbearable, in fact so bad that it was hard to have any power on the downhill stretch.

Still, a record was set for the women (there are some fast Americans in this race)-- the top woman finished with a course record time of 48:14; and the top man, 42:49.

I did a 56:25:00 (my age was wrong in these results-- I am 29, not 24).  Michelle did a 1:10:08.  While hanging out at the post-race keg party shortly after we finished we met another CPTC runner, Jane Monti -- she ran a 1:13:03.

Apart from the race we had plenty of fun at the party.  And a great time in Jacksonville.  Michelle got to visit my old neighborhood, hang out on the beach, and eat more shrimp than she has ever eaten in a week.  The weather at the beach was great-- we did have some good training runs here.'

This attached picture was taken by my grandfather in Jacksonville following the River Run, and the race party. The setting is my old neighborhood of Ortega Forest (in Jax Ortega is pronounced OR TIG UH, not Or tay guh).

KAWASAKI HALF MARATHON, Tokyo, Japan (March 9, 2002)

From Charles Allard Jr:

Today I ran the Kawasaki 1/2 Marathon and 5K. The publicly certified course (as they told us over the loudspeaker twice for some unknown reason) was run along the banks of the Tamagawa River. The dirt and gravel out-and-back course was completely flat (what do you expect along a river bank?) and aided by superb 16 degree weather (that's about 63 Farenheight ). About 500 of us lined up; some in tights, longsleeve shirts and gloves others in shorts and singlets. Some one was going to suffer and it turned out to be the heavily dressed ones as there were only two water stops.  For me it was even worse because at the first one, some runner had the bad manners (or cunning) to knock down every cup in the first two rows leaving the rest of us without water for a good 15k (10 miles). Further challenges along the course were baseballs whzzing past my head and frisbees tumbling at my feet (the course is bordered by fields the entire way), Despite this, I managed to hang on for a 1:20:49 finish (better than my last 1/2) for a pace of about 6:09 per mile.(my kilometer per hour calculator is missing). This was not good enough for a top six finish (the top guy finished in 1:13:06) but pretty good for me.

Technical note: His pace was 6:10 per mile (or 3:50 per kilometer).

REGENT PARK 10K, London, United Kingdom (March 4, 2002)

From Michael Sheren:

On Sunday, 3 March, Paul Stuart-Smith ran a 36.41 10K and came in 7th overall in the last race of the Regents Park six race Grand Prix season.  However, more importantly, Paul won the Regents Park 10 Grad Prix Series in the Vet (40-49) division. Paul did so by participating and placing in 5 out of the 6 races that encompass the Grand Prix. Paul won his division in style by outright winning two of the five races and placing in the top ten in the other three. If I had a digital camera, I would be sending you a photo of Paul (in CPTC racing attire) holding up a very large wooden piece of hardware to commemorate his accomplishment. Jolly good!! Pip pip for CPTC in the UK!!

As a small aside, I did run the race as well placing 46th in a very slow, fat time of 42:39.
