ESCARPMENT TRAIL RUN, Wyndham, NY (July 28, 2002)

Peter Allen, 3:10:20, 6th overall
Stefani Jackenthal, 4:00:10, 3rd overall female

Race conditions: "Cloudy skies kept temperatures from reaching the 90's as predicted, but the high humidity and occasional rain made the normally nasty footing even more of a challenge. The kazillion rocks that runners are forced to use for footholds became very slick, sending most runners to the ground at least once. And of course this year's ample supply of bees, stinging at least 25% of the field, added another dimension to conquering the course."

Bob Summers:

Self timed..... 12:10.......Completed all 5 mountain passes.

The altitude was lung-bursting and the heat and steepness of some of the climbs were mind-numbing...

Saddle time was about 10:30....... took six 15 minutes breaks ...

Definitely a much harder day than my first Ironman.

SHONAN MONTHLY TIME TRIALS (10K), Tokyo, Japan (July 7, 2002)

From Charles Allard Jr:

Yesterday, I ran the 10k portion of the Shonan Monthly Time Trials.  Run parallel to the beach closest to Tokyo, it seemed more of an obstacle race than a straight road race. First was the blowing sand which was so bad that parts of the course were covered in sand (not easy to run through, as you can imagine) and the start line had to be moved to a tunnel.  Also, this particular beach is very popular with surfers and other than the distraction of pretty girls in their bikinis (or young men in their trunks for the women runners), the surfers like to ride on bikes to where the gnarly waves are with their surfboards attached by what looks like a giant hooks. If these were not enough, then there is the typical Japanese summer heat of around 30 degress and high humidity.

Running to the start line (as usual), the gun sounded and we were off.  I ran through most of the several dozen athletes and pulled up to sixth place. About half way I passed one more and to my amazement one more runner stopped for a leisurely drink.  And that was that.  At 5k, the positions didn't really change and I crossed the line in just over 38 minutes for 4th place.

The worst part of the race? I was supposed to run this with Jesus Montero but we messed up meeting to go to the race together and I am afraid Montero-san is lost somewhere in Tokyo. Maybe next week we can run part of the Anti-Nuclear Ekiden together.

I did a lot of watching Wimbledon & a lot of gardening but could not resist to enter a 5K race in Bexley (a suburb of Columbus) on the 4th of July. It was extremely hot, even with an 8:30am start (around 85 degrees w/ 110% humidity), but at least, it was flat & shaded.  Anyway according to my watch, I ran 21:52, but the website posted my time as 21:29 (there are no chips in Ohio).   So, I'll take the faster time!"
