8th TEGANUMA (1/2) ECO-MARATHON, Tokyo, Japan (October 27, 2002)

From Charles Allard Jr:

This weekend, as promised in a previous e-mail, I ran the 8th Teganuma (1/2) Eco-Marathon. This race stands out for two reasons: the goody bag and the use of Championship Chips.

First the race. The weather was one of those beautiful Fall days that bring bright sun and heat to otherwise cooling days. This of course meant that about 1/3rd of the racers were way overdressed in tights, hats, long sleeve shirts and gloves in a day with temperatures in the 20s. (centigrade).  Unfortunately these were all runners slower than me.  The race course is one of those complicated ones that turns right, left, right, right, left until you really are not certain what direction you are facing and are weaving back and forth across the road and in my case added about 800 meters to my race. After about 6k this settled down and the race looped around a swamp/lake called "Teganuma". Teganuma Lake stands out in Japan as having been rated the worst polluted lake in Japan for 27 years straight! Twenty-seven years! This was the first year that it was not but the organizers in their celebration of this dubious honour failed to mention how far down the list of polluted the lake fallen.

This brings me to question number one. Several (many several) years ago I purchased a Championship Chip direct from the company that manufactures and runs this racket (a Dutch company) and was promised that the high price would allow me to use this in any race they run around the world. Here in Japan it seems my CC would not work due to non-payment of a yearly fee to register and track my CC. So I use one provided by the race organizers and get the same service for no extra fee. Go figure. On top of this the CC itself is not used for official scoring so that confident I would be ok lining up behind 1,000 runners (I was a little late to the start line) I would get an official time. NOT. Only the official clock counts. Why is this? I feel cheated out of an age group award (those over 35 will understand the importance of this).

The finish brings question number two.  What is the oddest race prize you have ever received? An ashtray? We have all heard those stories. A big piece of art? Not very practical but at least an A for effort. No, the oddest has to be from the Eco-Marathon; compost bags. Yes, a set of 10 compost bags for your wet trash. As I live in the city and most of the other runners in this race do as well the nearest we get to a garden is a potted plant that sits on the balcony sadly receiving what ever rain happens to fall between the buildings. This gift seemed optimistic.

Oh yeah, my time 1:23 (on my watch). I feel as sore as if I had run three or four minutes faster. So remember a little more pain in the race may get you a better time and it certainly won't make the recovery any worse. Good luck in the NYC MARATHON this weekend.

OLEY VALLEY COUNTRY CLASSIC 10 MILER, Oley Valley, PA (October 13, 2002)

From Paul Sinclair:

I ran in the Oley Valley, PA 10-miler on Sunday, Oct. 13th. The course was advertised as "flat and fast, with a few rolling hills" (wasn't the Reach The Beach Relay  supposed to be "a few rolling hills"???), but I must've zoned out during the flats because I ran 10 miles of continuous rolling hills. There were approx. 250 people at the start, and I went out with the chase pack. Around the 2m mark I had a Reach the Beach moment when we found ourselves off course and doubling back. We lost approximately 30 secs and luckily were able to make up the time and places in the next mile. I ran the next 7 miles completely alone, taking in the incredible scenery of the Amish Country.   I finished 9th overall in 1:03:33, and 1st in my AG (M25-29). At the awards ceremony I was presented with an iron and ceramic hot plate/pot holder-thing with the award painted on the ceramic, along with the info that I was now the "2002 RRCA 10-mile PA State Champ, M25-29"...I guess it pays to run a race when you're out of town. I didn't notice when I registered that this race was serving as a RRCA state championship.
