(VERY LONG) DETOUR
To get to the Boston Marathon, it was
necessary to begin with the Queens Half
Marathon on Saturday before heading north. Even arriving
in Boston on Saturday means that there is still a long time before
the race on Monday --- a long time during which much can happen.
Unfortunately, we do not know what these photos mean, so you will
be as lost as we are. This, of course, is the essence of this
website ...

Photo
01: When we say a mystery, we mean a mystery.
In this photo, there is someone in the dark ...
-
Photo
02: In the next photo, this person is revealed
as a man with a drink in his hand. We don't know who he
is, we don't know what he is drinking and we don't know where
this is.

03: Many years ago, I had to take the U.S. citizenship
test in a personal interview with an Immigration Officer.
She gave me the standard hand-drawn drawing, pointed to something
and asked me what it was. I said, "This is a man."
Then she pointed to something else and asked what that was.
I said, "This is a dog." Whereupon she put aside
the picture and we proceeded to discuss the water-paintings
of the person who was related to my sponsor. Why am I
telling you all this? I have just shown you a man.
I am now showing you a dog.
We compared this dog to the mystery dog
in the 1999 Vermont Marathon
photo album. It is possible that it is the same one, but
it is hard to tell since three years has elapsed (which is a
long time for a dog). We will not ask for a readers' poll
as to whether this is the same dog. All we want to know
is, "Why is it that anytime we asked someone else to take
photos, we get mystery dogs?"
-
Photo
04: This is another man. He is standing
on a beach with the ocean behind him. This man is no mystery
because he is the designated photographer James Siegel.
The mystery is, "Who is taking his photo?"
-
Photo
05: It looks like we have now left the beach and
we are following the Boston Marathon sign . It looks like
we are taking the green line subway.
-
Photo
06: The painted sign on the road reads "1
Mile To Go." It looks like we are nearing the finish
but there does not seem to be any runners or spectators.
-
Photo
07: Instead, we find ourselves in front of a decrepit
building named Fenway Park with many other people.
-
Photo
08: Now we are staring at the back of someone
wearing a uniform with the number 25. Could this be Jason
Giambi of the New York Yankees?
-
Photo
09: Here is someone else in a uniform. Could
this be Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees? There
is a policeman staring at the crowd. Why has he not arrested
the man who has sneaked into the owner's box to take these photos?
-
Photo
10: Here a couple more New York Yankees.
The photographer adds these comments, "I'm a Mets fan.
I don't even like the Yankees. The only reason I took
these photos was for Tony Ruiz."
-
Photo
11: The players line up and take off their caps
for the national anthem. Joe Torre (#6) is losing
his hair ...
-
Photo
12: As good as the owner's box is, all you get
to see is the back of the players' heads.
-
Photo
13: In the on-deck circle with Derek Jeter.
-
Photo
14: Third-base coach Willie Randolph.

15: Live action from the game with the crowd in
the background

for the New York Yankees

17: The wall called the Green Monster in left
field, with the crass commercial symbols.

18: Close-up of the batting box. This plays
right to the strength of our 20X Sony Mavica zoom lens.

Bernie Williams at bat.
THE BOSTON MARATHON

Photo
20: The usual photo booth where you can stick
your head into the world recordholder's full-sized finishing
line photo. Unfortunately, a new world record was set
yesterday at the London Marathon, so that an improvised revision
was necessary.
