in New Hampshire. I signed up with a group of 11 other runners

TURTLE MARATHON (10K),
Tokyo, Japan (September 16, 2001)
From Charles Allard Jr.
On September 16th, I ran the Turtle Marathon (10k)
in about 40:12. Very hot and humid. Good enough for
12th place out of 1,000 but not good enough for an official placing.
You see, I neglected to put on my Championship Chip and the race
was fully automated, thus no official time or place! I did
however pass Mr. Nakayama (4th place in the Seoul and Barcelona
Olympic Marathons, 2-time winner of Fukuoka Marathon). Do
you think he was running at full pace?"
TOKYO MASTERS' TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS,
Tokyo, Japan (September 9, 2001)
From Charles Allard Jr.
"After hemming and hawing for several years,
I finally had to admit that at 37 I am closer to a veteran runner
than a 21 year old. It doesn't feel that way inside my head but
so be it. I managed to run the 5K in about 17:43, good enough
for fourth place. This showing is tempered by the fact that a
60-year-old won the race in a little over 16 and one-half minutes.
Question for coach: I ran the entire race in even splits of 1:25
a quarter (ok one at 1:30) but the last 2.5 laps in about 1:22.
Should I have run each lap faster or done better in the second
1/2?"
