22nd ALL JAPAN MASTERS ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP HALF MARATHON,
Tokyo, Japan (October 26, 2001)
From Charles Allard Jr:
This weekend, I ran the 22th All Japan Masters
Athletic Championship 1/2 marathon. (Yes, they call it the 22th).
A little less grand than it sounds, about 400 runners ran the
half marathon, with three being over 75 years old. That you can
get three over 75s ( in a country that sent a big portion of its
young men to death 60 years ago) to run a half marathon is indeed
a show of the depth of marathon running in Japan. Unfortunately
it poured rain the whole day. Although running along a riverside
is nice in the sunshine, it tends to collect water when it rains
so that there several serious puddles to run through. I quickly
remembered that socks become rather troublesome once they are
full of water. I managed to eke out a 1:21:13 for 3rd place in
my category and 20th overall. The winner finished in 1:11:17 to
give you sense of the overall pace. One wonderful aspect of running
in Japan is the emphasis on ceremony so even a 3rd place warrants
a medal and a nice certificate presented by the local mayor.

"TOBY
TAKES TUNEUP IN STRIDE"
From Eddie Coyle (New York
Daily News, October 16, 2001)
Toby Tanser, 32, won Sunday's 18-mile
marathon tuneup in Central Park in 1:37:52. Srba Nicolic,
34, was runnerup in 1:38:52.
Tanser led all the way. "I pretty much
ran as I felt until 16 miles, when I slowed a bit due to a stomach
cramp," he said. "Then I just ran to finish. It was
likely dehydration. I didn't drink any water."
Tanser is looking forward to the New York City
Marathon after participating in a string of Central Park races.
"These races are great, I'm glad they put
on so many of them," said Tanser, who runs about 90 miles
a week. He'll be making his NYC debut on Nov. 4. His best marathon
came in Brazil (2:16:07).
This story came as a mystery to us.
Upon information and belief, 33-year-old Toby Tanser ran
the Kurt Steiner XC 5K on Sunday and there was no 18 miler
scheduled in the park that morning. Toby is a late entry in
the New York City Marathon on November 4th, but this will be his
second year (and not a debut) in this race. After some investigation,
we found these race
results for the 18-mile Marathon Tune-Up race in Central
Park:
Toby Tanser, 32 years old,
1:37:20 (5:24 min/mile), 1st place overall
Srba Nikolic, 34 years old, 1:38:52 (5:29 min/mile),
2nd place overall
The problem was that this race took
place on August 27, 2000, for which Eddie Coyle wrote in
the New York Daily News on August 29, 2000.
"TANSER
SHARP IN DRY RUN"
Toby Tanser, 32, won Sunday's 18-mile
Marathon Tuneup by 200 yards in 1:37:52. Srba Nicolic,
34, was runnerup in 1:38:52. Alexa Babakhanian, 33, was
runaway first woman in 2:01:33. Kathleen Coughlin, 32,
followed in 2:04:28.
Tanser, who led all the way, said: "I pretty
much ran as I felt until 16 miles when I slowed a bit due to
a stomach cramp. Then I just ran to finish. It was likely dehydration.
I didn't drink any water."
Tanser's still enthusiastic after another in
a string of Central Park races. "These races are great,"
he said. "I'm glad they put on so many of them."
He eyes the Nov. 5 five-borough marathon, which
will be his NYC debut. His best: 2:16:07 at Brazil.
"I went out conservatively, third or fourth
at a 6:30 pace," said Babakhanian, who didn't want to tire
early on over the tough hills. She nailed the women's leaders
at 11 miles and pulled away. Her best marathon: 2:49 at Grandma's
in Duluth, where she qualified for 2000 Olympic trials. She's
set on making 2004 trials her next goal.
Tanser and Babakhanian train mostly on Central
Park's hills. Tanser even uses the 18-mile tuneup course for
long runs. Both now plan to use short races as speed workouts
for NYC.
We do not know the answer to the question, "Why?"

-
Craig Chilton: I can't
believe you missed the esteemed Colin Frew (4th overall!)
in the LIRRC 30K Marathon Tune-Up results ... you must not have
your web sniffer tuned in to alumni members. P.S.
And this is not the first time that you missed a race result
--- you never published Michael Rymer's race in Colorado.
-
Stuart Calderwood: Did you
notice the name of the fourth finisher overall in the Long Island

are about right. Has our country's security been breached?
Concerned, SC
-

I did talk to someone from London who finished ahead of me ...

CHILDREN'S COUNTRY HEALTH ROAD RACE,
Tokyo, Japan (October 7, 2001)
From Charles Allard Jr: "Funny you should
have as your caption under a picture of Coach, an admonition to
be careful on the down hills. I didn't and am hurting right now.
I ran in the Kodomo no Kuni Kenko Marason (Children's Country Healthy
Road Race), a series of events from a full marathon to a one mile
children's run. All are run on multiples of a 4.1 kilometer undulating
loop. I ran the two loop course and booked the downhills. It felt
so good at the time to actually be fast, even if it was gravity
induced but I hurt now. I finished the 8.2k in a pretty good
30:30 considering it was pouring rain the entire time. Also, I was
egged on by the runner in front who finished just before me in first
place. He had the annoying habit of looking back about every 500
meters. Was he mocking me? Maybe one of the front runners like Toby
can tell."

- Note: All our runners set personal bests
today
- Note: Central Park Track Club members
were cheered on the course by honorary member-at-large Patrick
McPhillips, who even ran a while with Noel Comess and
Patrick Cowden. As proof, the panting words of good
cheer from Patrick Cowden on Patrick McPhillips'
cellular phone are immortalized on the answering machine of Stuart
Calderwood/Stacy Creamer ...

From Kevin Arlyck:
James Siegel and I ran the Prospect Park
10k on Saturday. Rob Zand joined us at the last minute,
having just run over from Manhattan and looking for a marathon-pace
tempo run before running back home. Somewhat rainy and windy,
but pretty decent conditions overall. James finished in
35:56(PR), 11th overall, and I finished in 35:12(PR), 8th overall,
thanks to Rob. He picked me up at mile 4 and paced me to
the finish. After the race we ran into Jesse Lansner, who
had run also. But the best part was THE HARDWARE! James and Jesse
each snagged 3rd place in their age group, and I placed first.
James was astounded by the size of our Brooklyn trophies, and
may be tempted to return for more. The only downside was that
since Rob did not officially enter, no team hardware for the orange.
