* not listed under CPTC
Dear Gay Pride 5M Race Director:
Thank you very much for staging another great
race on Saturday. I and many other members of my own and other teams
all agreed that designating the Gay Pride 5-Miler as the NYRRC June
Scoring Race for men resulted in probably the most competitive fields
(male *and* female) this race has ever had, and certainly one of
the largest and most festive. Thanks again.
And I hate to be a pain, but...: The TEAM RESULTS
for the 5M weren't listed on the NYRRC site, but the printed results
which I saw after the race showed that the NY Flyers won the women's
competition, with 40 points total. However, I noticed that Central
Park Track Club runner Lucy White (10th woman overall) was not listed
as a CPTC member. I spoke to Tom Kelley at the NYRRC, and he agreed
that this was indeed a mistake, and it would be corrected. This
correction would thus award CPTC with 39 points, thus edging out
the Flyers for the win by one point. Being that the 1st place team
award was already handed out after the race, can anything still
be done about this? Please let me/us know.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks,
Jud Santos
Central Park Track Club
We are glad to report that, thanks to the intercession of Jud
Santos, the Central Park Track Club women are officially
the winners!
P.S. This race was Jill Gisvold's last hurrah for the Central
Park Track Club, as she will be moving back to San Francisco
to pursue her nursing studies. We will miss her and we wish her
the very best!!!
CORPORATE CHALLENGE 2nd Race, CENTRAL
PARK, New York City (6/25/97) (reported by Sarah
Gross)
On account of the heat, this was turned into a fun run with no
times being recorded. This means that our own Alan Bautista,
who won the second group start, will not be listed in the
annals of running as such. He said, "Now I know how Jud Santos
felt, with no Central Park Track Club teammates --- nor anyone
else that I know, for that matter! --- at the finish to witness
my coup." (see Famous Sayings # 27
for Jud's story).
Alan arrived late and was modest enough to hide around around twenty
rows from the front. Once the race started, the natural thoroughbred
quality came through and he moved into the lead without really pushing.
Unfortunately, Alan did not keep time for himself. As he crossed
the finish line, he began yelling for anyone to given him the time.
But nobody bothered to do that, and so he will never know his own
winning time.

MOUNT
WASHINGTON RACE, New Hampshire (6/21/97) This race
covers the 7.6 miles from base to summit of this 6,288 foot mountain
(see live picture) with an
average 12% grade. Mount Washington holds the world record for the
highest wind velocity recorded (231 miles per hour). The course
also holds the distinction that the best runner's time (59+ minutes)
is faster than the best cyclist's time (1:00+ hour).
Two Central Park Track Club persons ran this race (under
the NYU Tri brand name!). The race started in warm conditions
(90+ degrees), but towards the summit, it was very windy (50+ miles
per hour) in heavy fog (10 ft visibility), with a wind chill factor
below 30 degrees.
Ross Galitsky, 170th male overall, 54th age group, 1:33:34
(12:15 min/mile)
Aubin Sullivan, 54th female overall, 22nd age group, 1:46:56
(14:02 min/mil)
Ross has these comments, "I recommend this
event if you want to do something different. It may be difficult
to enter (only via lottery) and a bit far from civilization, but
what a heck?! George and his "Dignity!
Form! Style!" slogan would not be heard above the wind
up there and no one would be able to see my running form
up there anyway with almost zero visibility."
By the way, the winning time was a blazing 8:15 min/mile pace!

TDI MUSEUM RUN
6/11/97- Fresh from her Advil PR-setting
race last Saturday, Laura Miller showed up for this midweek
5K run. Perhaps it was a duty call, as she is with the Guggenheimer.
Meanwhile, FDNY Captain John Gleason ran the race in 19:37
on the hottest day of the year so far, even though he was not on
duty call (to everyone's relief!). Roland Soong covered the
race in 19:54 ("No exertion, no pain") for his first race
in nine months and the first time this year that he went up Harlem
Hill without walking.

GREAT
CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE SWIM Annapolis
MD
6/8/97 - Scott Willet finished
8th overall in this very tough 4.4 mile race in 1:42:32, second
in his age group (M35-39). The temperature was a cold 61 degrees
in June. A total of 110 competitors had to be retrieved from the
water due to hypothermia, with 12 being hospitalized (local television
news --- 'Swim turned dangerous
for some'). Scott was right with the leaders (including 5-time NCAA
champion and US Olympian Jeff Kostoff) through the first half-mile
until he had equipment problems and lost contact. But he closed
well, and picked off about ten people in the final half mile. His
story about how he kept warm in his wet suit will be narrated in
some other place, as it is rated as "not suitable for family
reading".
Now for the $64,000 question: "What
does this have to do with running?" I dunno known. You tell
me.
Rejoinder (added 7/14/97):
The competitors had to get on their feet and run/walk the last few
meters from the shallow waters to the finish line. This is not as
simple as it sounds. The competitors had been swimming hard in a
horizontal position for a couple of hours and it was difficult to
start running again in a vertical position. Therefore, many people
were wobbling and staggering.
THE
MIGHTY MONTAUK TRIATHLON (6/7/97,
as reported by Jud Santos)
3rd place overall, Michael Trunkes, 1:58:08
37th place overall, 3rd woman, Stephanie Gould, 2:11:48
123rd place overall, Randall Ehrlich 2:26:53, (after
spending 19+ minutes in the swim-bike transition?)
The self-appointed statistician provides this analysis:-
In 1996, our own Anna Coatsworth was first woman in this
race with bike/swim/run splits of 20:12/57:30/43:57. In 1997, Michael
Trunkes' bike/swim/run splits were 20:31/59:41/37:55. Other
things being equal, Anna would be ahead of Michael in both the bike
and swim legs! Of course, in triathlons, things (course, wind, current,
tide, temperature, etc) are seldom equal from one race to the next.

Terri Sonenclar has made a career of collecting trophies
from obscure, out-of-the-way races. By her reckoning, this race
is 45 minutes north of where she lives and should therefore be easy
pickings. Imagine her surprise when she saw the mass of elite runners!
It was a MAC points race, and what some people would do for a little
bit of glory and money!

- If Karel Matousek had decided to run this race, it would

- If Roland Soong would stop writing this nonsense, then

VERMONT CITY MARATHON
5/25/97 - The defending champion Central
Park Track Club team finished 5th overall (4th Men's Open) at the
Relay Marathon in a time of 2:31:16.
On the team were Andreas Nolte, Alan Ruben, Jud
Santos, Michael Goldstein and Mike Garland. To put this
in perspective, the team actually fell short of Alan Ruben's individual
PR of 2:30:22 set just a few weeks ago at the London Marathon.
Perhaps realizing that he would not get onto the
front page as the winning CPTC teams did over the last two years,
our anchor runner Mike Garland collapsed in a heap as soon
as he crossed the finish line --- just in time for the photographer
from the Free Press to snap this dramatic shot.
So at least he made it into the paper (under the
caption, "A member of relay team 5509 falls in exhaustion after
finishing Sunday" without his name or CPTC being mentioned,
while his arms covered up the CPTC name and logo on his singlet),
although perhaps not the way he would have wanted to. By the way,
he was just dehydrated and he has recovered nicely. "I gave
it my all", he said. Then he added emphatically, "¡NOBODY
PASSED ME!"
CPTC team member Jiyon Lee completed the
marathon in a PR of 3:27:20, for 11th women in the 16-29 age group.

group in 1:32.23. According to her, this seemingly out-of-the-way
race was surprisingly competitive.

4/20/97 - A downed power line resulted in a last-minute
course change, adding approx. 1/8
mile. This was sort of a heartbreaker for Stacy and her fans - she
broke 19:00 for the first time, but doesn't have the big "18:xx"
to prove it! It was a great day for the team, with fast times all
around and age group wins for Yumi and Irene.--JS

HALF-MARATHON (Results compiled by Jud Santo.)
4/20/97 - Several of CPTC's sub-1:16 stable showed up for this scoring
race, but with too many claiming to be "out of shape"
and running it "only for training," the men's team lacked
the punch to really make a killing. (Though Ricardo can be excused
- he ran it with a hernia!) With only 3 men breaking 1:20, the Open
"A"'s placed only 5th and slipped from 3rd to 5th in the
NYRRC points standings. --JS
Women's Open Team: might have been #1, but Jiyon
forgot to list her CPTC affiliation...!
