The most famous running book title is The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner, the autobiography of Alan Sillitoe made into a movie.  In one sense, the activity of long distance running is a solitary experience in which one confronts the boredom of the slow passage of time and endures the onset of fatigue and pain (see article by Kevin Tiller).  Of course, long distance running can be made into a group activity, as when one joins a club such as the Central Park Track Club or when one participates in a mass spectacle such as the New York City Marathon.  But it is also possible to connect with a much larger community through one's running, as the following notices will show.

TEACH FOR AMERICA Central Park Track Club members Shula Sarner, Larry Thraen, Stacia Schlosser, Jerome O'Shaughnessy and Sandra Scibelli are involved in fundraising for the Teach For America project.  They are the key drivers to form Teach For America's first marathon team, named Team TFA (of course).  Shula and Larry are the coaches, Jerome is leading long runs, Stacia is on the steering committee that organized the team and Sandra is one of the founders of the team and is helping in all capacities.

SUBJECT:  2001 London Marathon
WHAT HE WROTE:  "You were probably trying to avoid embarrassing me by not publishing the fact, but I did do the London marathon yesterday, though only just!  Check running number 29474......I was 6153rd with a time of 3:45:47.  I had been 1:24:02 at half way but had to walk 7 of the last 11 miles ... all for charity of course!

I ran for The Attlee Foundation (named after the former British Prime Minister) to raise money to help set up much needed recreational facilities for the children of Spitalfields, one of the more deprived parts of the East End of London.  I chose The Attlee Foundation because it is involved in similar work to The New York Road Runners Foundation with which I was involved before I left New York.

Any contributions you can raise will be greatly appreciated and should be sent to me at Thorney Court, Palace Gate, London, W85NJ.  Sterling checks should be made out to The Attlee Foundation, but I think US dollar checks had better be made out to me, if that is acceptable, since I doubt the Foundation can accept dollars readily."

AN ANGEL WRITES: Margaret Angell wrote:

Dear runners, friends, teammates, coaches, family ...

So as many of you know, for the last few years the Angell family has run a small fundraising operation called THE MARATHON TEAM to raise money for ALS research.  Back in the summer of 1999, we set out to find a few people that could run, contribute and "do something" about this horrible disease.  Three years, four marathons, and over $500,000 donated later, I am asking you for your help ONE LAST TIME.

We want to pull together one last team.  But, as usual, I cannot do it without your help.  I need your help recruiting runners.

The basic requirements for a runner:
* Wants to run the most exciting marathon in the world on November 3, 2002
* Wants to raise money for an excellent cause.  (We ask that each runner aim to raise $3,000 but we do not have a minimum or a maximum level.)
* Wants to be part of a team of over 20 runners all trying to reach the same goal - 26.2 miles and a total amount raised of $150,000.
* Wants a coach.  Toby Tanser is ours.  http://www.tanser.org/

If you or a firend/relative/cousin/boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/etc. is interested, please ask them to email me (magsangell@aol.com) and register for the lottery at: http://www.nyrrc.org/nyrrc/mar01/info/howto2002.html

As an added bonus, each year I get 12 numbers for people that don't make it into the race through the lottery.  If you or your friends commit to running for the team now, and don't get in through the lottery, I will put you at the top of the list to get one of the 12 automatic entries.

If you have any questions, comments, thoughts, ideas, please don't hesitate to email me (Magsangell@aol.com )or call me at (917) 951-6100.

Thanks for everything!
Margaret
